Ok, I'm biased but this hotel is pretty goddamn amazing…read more Rooms - large, airy and historic. I don't think they're accessible to folks with disabilities though. Very clean, very comfy. Food - we ate dinner and breakfast here. Both were honestly really good - pub classic food done well. There were some ill behaved kids screaming like banshees but not the hotel's fault. Staff - uniformly pleasant! Other customers - really friendly! Entertainment - so like most hotels/pubs, expect a small gaming room. This one had maybe 12-15 machines. I won a bit, I lost a bit and then the gaming gods smiled upon me with a major $2400 bonus. $$$$$$ - five stars!

In fact, I ended up making my way back here a couple of times, namely to get my daily fix of good craft beers, of which they had plenty. The atmosphere is also pretty good, and they seem to have put of lot of effort into making this pub a great place for the young, and young at heart. Oh, and the service was also really friendly and warm as well. This is certainly one of those pubs that I would frequent regularly if I happen to be down in the area.

The staff were quite friendly and helpful, though the beer selection really wasn't all that great. Actually, as a pub, this place was pretty good, and the service was great. In fact I found the service to be really helpful, especially since we ended up wandering into the wrong bar, and instead of being rude, they pointed us to the correct one. Also, this place did have some nice beers on tap as well, so yeah, this place was pretty good.

They have daily lunch specials and whilst I chose the Vegetarian lasagne my colleagues had the chicken rissoles. They praised their choices and said the meal was great. The veg lasagne was ok - a little bland and mainly potatoe and tomatoe sauce. Nothing exciting to be honest. The meal did come with a salad bar and the salads were fresh and a varied choice. The bread basket was empty so no bread but good salads.

Once the gaol was no longer housing inmates, the historic building was transformed into a sixty five bed accommodation facility, and since 2010 has extended to become a function and event centre. We now offer affordable accommodation in a very unique environment. We are well reviewed on trip advisor and are quickly building a reputation for our cleanliness, value for money and our friendly and helpful staff. Our unusual building becomes an amazing venue. We regularly facilitate private functions, music shows, art exhibitions, weddings, workshops and seminars. If you are looking for a comfy bed or a brilliant venue and would welcome an unforgettable experience, you must come in and check out The Old Mount Gambier Gaol. We would love to show you what we have done to the place!

Then again, it isn't uncommon to find pubs also offering rooms to stay in. There are two types of rooms, the pub rooms and the motel rooms, and the pub rooms basically have a shared bathroom. It actually isn't a bad place to stay at, especially with their dinner specials, and the free breakfast packs. I guess the only quip I actually had with the place was that they didn't really have a great selection of tap beers.

There's a massive footy oval (park) across the road but no it's not a car museum or shrine! It is a clean motel with spacious rooms and recently updated bathrooms. It's a bit noisy some nights if you are staying in rooms close to the Penola Road roundabout, due to the regular flow of timber mill and freight trucks. Request a room further away from the roundabout if you are a light sleeper! There is a small indoor pool and playground facilities, as well as a small alfresco pergola type area where you can enjoy the evening sun. The only thing I find problematic with COTP are the showers - the shower heads are a bit dodgy, and the shower cubicle is positioned such that if you are in there the bathroom sensor light turns off so you are left in the dark unless you step out of the shower to be in range of the sensor. Extremely frustrating when you are in the midst of washing your hair or shaving! The restaurant is nice but expensive - if you are on budget a variety of cafes, Subway and other fast food is a short stroll away.
