Le Pavillon Villemaurine - A look up from the garden

Le Pavillion as it is know locally was the perfect place for us to conclude our 10 days in France…read more After. big cities and big castles we fell in love with the tiny village of Saint-Emilion named after a 7th century, cave-dwelling monk. It's a bit hard to classify Le Pavillion -yes it is small, 5 rooms, and yes they offer a nice French breakfast but they are much more than a small Inn or B&B as the owners, Julian and Nikki make you feel more like family. They are two Australians who came to the area 12 months ago for a 6-month stay and never left. They have certainly found their true calling and run a clean, comfy deluxe place that they bought and remodeled some years ago. Our room, Cardinal, was on the 2nd floor (1st to the French) as are most rooms. The room was quite large with lots on light from two 6 foot high windows that can we opened to let in the fresh air. The bathroom was large with a modern rain shower. The inn is surrounded on three sides by a small vineyard which made for a nice view. There are also vineyards across the street stretching off into the distance. Despite this idyllic setting, the small town of Saint-Emilion is only a two minute (or less) walk away and there are many great restaurants all within 10 minutes so even without a car you can easily take full advantage of the small town. As for their hospitality either Nikki or Julian are around most of the day with ideas for sight seeing or wine tasting (they owned a local vineyard for a while so know their stuff) and are happy to recommend restaurants and set up reservation. As they are native English speakers their are no language issues what so ever. In the afternoon, there is always coffee, tea, water snacks and an open bottle if local wine and you can just help yourself, This is a really great find and so much more peaceful to stay just outside of bustling Saint-Emilion.

I first read about this little bed and breakfast in a travel magazine article about the most unique…read morehotels in the world. When I saw that I could spend the night in a giant wine barrel, I had to do it! It's literally located in the middle of a Bordeaux vineyard. We were arriving very late at night and almost couldn't find the place. We started to get panicked but luckily found it. It's pitch black and down a gravel road, so be prepared. I'd suggest you arrive during daylight hours just to be safe because the stress really got to us! There are two barrels on the property, and we booked the "Cozy" room. It was absolutely adorable! It's a standalone giant barrel (for real) with a tiny little window. I'm super claustrophobic but the ceiling is super high so I never felt freaked out. The owner has put in so many nice touches too -- a fully stocked mini fridge, a bottle of the winery's wine, a tea box, plenty of seating areas, extra blankets -- anything you need is at your fingertips. Make sure you write in the guest register book in the room, I had a blast reading all of the previous guests' entries. See my photos for all the cool amenities. The shower was good (if small) and the room was simply charming. The views of the vineyard were incredible. Again, this hotel is in the middle of nowhere so enjoy the peace and quiet! In the morning we had a knock at the door. The owner had left a huge basket of fresh pastries, jams, and homemade yogurt for breakfast. We ate just about everything in that basket, it was so good! We never had any personal, face to face interaction with the owners either, but we did arrive very late and left the next morning. I wish we'd been able to stay more than one night because they'll give you a tour of their vineyard. It was such a private, gorgeous view that it would make the perfect romantic getaway for wine lovers. This isn't luxurious by any means but it's a cozy little bed and breakfast with some privacy. I hope the secret doesn't get out because I LOVED it here and can't wait to return.
