The museum details Billy Graham's life beautifully, and has a scavenger hunt for younger kids. I came here with my friends and the rooms at the end are spectacular. The museum is quite and focused, and the staff are helpful! Overall the museum is well organized, and thorough in its coverage beyond Billy Graham as an individual, covering also the context of evangelical revivals in America throughout its history. Thankful also for the detailed coverage of a rare man of integrity throughout Graham's evangelistic career, covering a lot of details that easily net out to practical takeaways for the average layman or Christian minister. Plus, free admission with a suggested donation. Can easily accommodate large groups!

I've been fortunate enough to visit Naper Settlement on various occasions throughout the years. My…read morefirst visit was many years ago for a field trip in elementary school. Decades later and I still clearly remember churning cream to make butter. Since then, various events have brought me back time and time again. I've visited with family members, out of towners and even worked the Christkindl market when it was located here. The passionate efforts and dedication behind this museum goes far beyond preserving and sharing history. Naper Settlement has become a wonderful community epicenter for Naperville and its neighboring towns. If you're not there for history, there are plenty of other reasons to visit. They have all types of events including markets, Oktoberfest, and a large safe outdoor space with themed playground to just let kids run wild. I highly recommend supporting this wonderful establishment. Free parking is located on the far end of the settlement but it can get pretty packed during events so I highly recommend arriving early in that case.

I dig museums, and this one isn't much but it's not a bad stop if you're in the area. It's a very…read morevery small museum but it does tell some of the history of the area, and that was interesting to learn a bit more about that older history, particularly the native peoples in the area. I visited because the Journeys exhibit sounded interesting, and it was small but well done. I think the other half of the exhibit, that goes more into depth about the Potawatomi, the area pre-colonization, and the overharvesting of beavers and other animals in the area, is a permanent exhibit. That was actually more interesting overall than the Journeys exhibit for me but that's mostly because I knew less of that history and information. It was cool to see an example of a Three Sisters garden, which was method of agriculture used by native folks. There's a game I love called Three Sisters and it is based upon these concepts. Squash, corn, and beans are the "three sisters"; they're known as this because of their symbiotic relationship. The corn stalks give the beans a structure upon which to climb and grow, and the nutrients in the beans nourish the soil. The squash--specifically, the leaves--provide ground cover and keep pests at bay. It's so fascinating to learn about some of these techniques that aren't practiced as much in modern day society. Not inside the museum but outside is a longhouse, a cabin, and possibly in the growing season an example of a three sisters garden. There's also walking trails and what looked like a picnic area. There's a reasonably large parking lot as well.

Hopefully the star rating will improve once we are able to access the exhibits!

Open 1-4pm for tours on Sundays, with extended hours for some other events (July 4; October for "Death Comes to the Tanner House," additional hours for the winter holidays). Admission is free (donations encouraged). My tour started with being asked to sit down (!) and chat with the head of the historical society in the second parlor while we waited for a docent to free up; don't miss the glass case there with artifacts from the privy dig, which is just what it sounds like. Many original furnishings; I recommend getting a docent tour if you can; my docent (Bill) pointed out many features I wouldn't have noticed otherwise, such as the cable motif on the glasses in the dining room, commemorating the first intercontinental telegraph cable which meant people could speak with their families in the Old Country. The two music boxes (with giant metal discs) are also worthy of note; the one upstairs works and they'll play it if you ask. The straw matting in the upstairs children's bedroom was apparently common in Victorian houses but I'd never seen it before. Your tour finishes in the rather florid parlor, whose rather astonishing colors are based on paint drips discovered when they redid the molding and carpet; a sample of the original carpet is displayed on the wall.
