If you are in the market for some of the finest dumplings in town you are reading the right review today my friend. These dumplings are just about as good as they get. Mmm pan fried beef dumplings. As you bite into the dough that has become the perfect combination of chewy and crunching the juices that were sealed inside finally get their time to shine, but only for just one moment as it will all be over before you have even had a chance to have a breathe. Lucky that was only the first one.

Good, flavoursome dumplings at a really good price. The Shanghai fried pork mini buns are addictive. They're kind of like a cross between the regular pan-fried dumpling and a xiao long bao. For those who don't know what that it, it's a steamed pork dumpling which also contains some pork broth. When eating it you should break the dumpling skin, making sure to retain the broth, and either suck out the broth or pour it on your spoon to drink. Xiao long bao have an almost cult following. Some prefer a very porky broth, while others want flavour and seasoning above all else. It's just a matter of trying a few and seeing what works best for you. Despite the name, Auntie's Dumplings offers so much more than just dumplings. The traditional Shanghai Fried Noodles is quite a popular dish, and the Braised Belly Pork in Noodle Soup is another one of their hits. In fact, you probably can't go wrong with most things on their menu. Even with something more adventurous like the Wine Hock - pork hock marinated in shaoxing wine. I've been here a few times and the food is consistently good, and the place is almost always packed. Even on weekdays it's not uncommon to see a line leading down the street at about 7:00pm onwards. The service is fast as they need to turn over tables quickly, so don't expect to stay chatting away all night.

    Review Highlights - Auntie's Dumplings

The Shanghai noodles are very nice and the family enjoyed the fried dumplings more than the steamed dumplings.

They gave us only two menus for the four of us which was annoying. The soup came out first and the other three of us had to wait so much longer for our entrees to come out. They too came out staggered, and since the chicken ribs came out SO late, they were still eating them as their main meal came out. I hate that. Cutlery was practically thrown at us. No class or care. Didn't find any of the staff warm or friendly at all, sadly. The one redeeming feature is that the food is nice. Is it the best Chinese food I've ever eaten? No. But it would scratch an itch if you're craving it. Also, just pray that if you order the Sweet and Sour Chicken like I did, that it's not drowning in sauce, as the batter then goes soggy and the cutlery gets sticky and sauce ends up on the table. Sadly, I wouldn't return here. There was no warmth, atmosphere or anything inviting, and some dishes were dirty. Yes, the food is ok, and reasonably priced, but there are so many other places one could go to. Sorry, but just being honest.

To put this into perspective, next week we're travelling to asia to do just that. Anyhow, I digress. The point is we get through a lot of steamed (and fried) parcels of deliciousness. Ripples in Bentleigh (not the other Ripples which I'm lead to believe is less than fabulous) is rather tremendous. Take a look at the pictures I've uploaded and you'll see how fresh everything is. This is now amongst our new favourites in Melbourne. So why only four stars? Well... the debate at our table came to the conclusion that you can't give a place 5 stars when you've only been once. Surely at least a star should be reserved for consistency. Anyone can have a great experience once. It's really not my thing, but I'll also say this - Ripples is extremely child friendly.
