I really love listening to the archives online. Liza and Patrick's show Cobain in a Coma is simply TO DIE FOR!!! It's so funny, their wierd banter back and forth about their absolutely fabulous lives. Like, seriously, these two cats LIVE THE LIFE! I guess since I know Liza I find it funnier than the lay listener, but still, it's just hilarious. I'm not really into the music that they play, but the best part about listening online is you can just skip to the good parts where Patrick is talking about puking outside of the Transfer and Liza is grabbing the microphone and yelling things in it way too closely. It Rules! Also That Dick On Eisenhower stands out as a totally ADD and wacky variety show poking fun at San Francisco, although I think it would work better as an animated series because it'd be easier to follow. Panache radio is a great service to the local music scene and Western Addition Radio also play lots of metal. I mean, METAL!!!! It's just great to tune in and hear Dj's ad-libbing, doing their thing, playing sometimes cool music and bringing people together for cool benefit shows and parties. Maybe I'll get one of them there shows myself, oneday?

I've learned alot about San Francisco from many a cab driver. Alot of them have lived in San Francisco for years and have the stories to back it up. Two that I've come across both partied with Janis Joplin back in the day, another pays $200 for a 2br (sigh, rent control), and countless others have painted pictures of what the Mission and the Haight once was back in the day. But my favorite thing about San Francisco cabs is the radio. I can't get enough of it. Of course there has been many a cab driver playing stuff that makes me want to get out right there wihout tip (i always tip though). But as of late, I've been really smitten by the stuff crooning during my cab rides. And apparently it's because everyone's listening to 106.9. 106.9 plays the classics. Not the cheesy stuff. But the good stuff. The kind that encourages you to tell the cabbie to take the long way around, just so you can hear Tiny Dancer all the way through.

CALM DOWN EVERYONE!! Oldies are back at 1550 AM. Yes it's that great monophonic AM sound with all the old tunes you love. The ones you sing along to. The ones that make you feel sad in that achingly sweet nostalgic way. The ones you haven't heard in a long time and you hear them and you think wow those guys were really good musicians. Started in Spain in 2002, signs soon after were put up all over Rota where I live and I tuned in for a change from the talkative spanish stations I'd swap out daily.... the KISS sound was very good with - back then - seemingly hours of non-stop relaxing, mellow music without commercials. While that has changed, if you like american and spanish music and wan a good mix, this is your station! With different frequencies to tune in depending on your spanish province, you can hear the great music that KISSfm offers. While they list their music as being adult contemporary, I've heard rap (rarely), country, R&B, and folk played, but all good (except for that rare rap). They're starting to talk a bit more than previously, which I don't like... but still... the music is outstanding and the spanish mix is quite excellent. Granted, you may hear every song played in the first hour of the day a few more times later throughout the day but as I said: it's all great music. During the nights, I think it's a tape running as I hear few commercials and occasionally that dreaded DEAD AIR, though these days it's getting to be a rare event... thank goodness!! In the mornings now, they air traffic incidents in the principle major cities: Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid which is quite useful. I would say 90% of the music heard - and I've been listening to this music non-stop for over six years - is repeated each and every day, and just a few thrown in to show they DO occasionally air something new. If your primary language is english, this would be a great way to brush up on your spanish skills, though some of the DJs talk quite quick.... think machine-gun!!! hahahahaa in Rota the frequency to tune in is 95.4FM though there are separate freqs available for Sevilla and Jerez.
