Small, efficient chain-grocery store that nearly has it all!…read more We were starting to grow tired of eating out in restaurants every day on vacation. So we decided to stop at this grocery store to get some salami, cheese, and bread to make some sandwiches back at our villa in Garda. It was very easy to pull off of the road to get to this supermarket, and there was also plenty of parking spots in front. (Luckily all cars in Italy are super small, so no problems fitting in the extra small parking spaces too.) But once inside - - we found a fantastic deli with a wonderful assortment of meats and cheeses. While the counter service attendant did not speak English, my limited Italian helped us and she allowed us to sample some flavors before making our final selection. We also loaded up on some chocolates here for gifts back home - - and some wine for later. Wow - 3EUR Montepulciano!!! And it was even good too!! All in all... we got a bunch of food for sandwiches, snacks, gifts, and food to take back home - - our total was only 20EUR. That was a bargain!!

To enter Auchan (the main store) You must go in through the Electronics section (on the left). This store has almost everything including groceries, electronics, household items, general merchandise, health and beauty, some clothes and all disposable supplies for parties (napkins, plates, table clothes, etc). And a large seasonal area (School supplies, Christmas, etc). Prices are reasonable.

I had been to an Auchan on my first trip to Europe back in 2001, and I had always remembered it as a supermarket-style chain (which for sure it is), but this specific store felt more like a Target or Walmart than a pure supermarket. They had electronics, housewares, and other items that I don't typically associate with a grocery store. Anyhow, the only weird thing is that (like many European stores), they are quite strict about how to enter and exit -- they have little gates specifically made to control the flow of traffic in to and out of the store.

If you decide to do the self checkout make sure to keep your receipt handy. You will need the bar code on the receipt to get out of the electric swinging bar. Also, if you bring your own bags you won't have to pay extra to use theirs.
