It's steps away from the Pope's Palace and it's right smack by the square. It can be noisy at times but it's where the action seems to be. Our room by European standards was alright but to someone who is used to American hotels, I felt a bit cramped. It seems like the king size bed took up the whole space. The floors are also a bit funky. There are steps within steps in any given floor to get to any of the rooms. The bed comfort was adequate. As someone said before it can use some upgrading. The staff here are also very very helpful. There was a railway strike when we were in France and Michael at the front desk went out of his way to find us alternative transportation since our original train booking was canceled and it seems every other scheduled trains to Marseille (our next destination) was canceled. As to the the breakfast, it was pretty good. We had the usual European cold cuts, fruits and croissants and whole slew of other bread choices. Coffee on the other hand was just bleh. I could never figure out how to use their espresso and cappuccino maker so I made do without. If we are ever in Avignon again, I would come back and stay here again despite the cramp space.

The bed was extremely comfortable, the sheets/towels/robes were luxurious, the AC in the room was quiet as I'm averse to noise while trying to get a good night sleep, the bathroom was large & roomy. Even though I was on the second floor, I couldn't hear anything from upper floors. It is conveniently located with a short walk to the main commercial area & the wall/bridge. I basically walked everywhere while my friend rented a bicycle from a nearby place (the hotel should be able to point you where) to discover more. My friend & I stayed in rooms 201 & 211. 201 is sun dappled, has a view to a street and a modest bathroom. 211 has more of a courtyard view with a large bathroom with separate bathtub & shower. Tips: You have to leave the room key with the frontdesk as it's on a heavy bell. Book early and be specific about your preferences. Each room is different & as this was founded in 1799 & modernized, there may be a few quirks (for example, it required two steps to unlock the room door). No fault of the hotel, there are some eateries directly across that played loud music in the evening. Try avoiding the rooms facing that direction. Suggestions: Some of the frontdesk people seemed inexperienced & can seem a little overwhelmed if there were some questions/requests OR a larger group at the same time. One sign of this was that either none of them will respond or all of them will try to respond at the same time & talk to each other while ignoring the guest who asked the question/request. Some of them seem to be taking directions from the porters which was unusual. A taxi was ordered for us to take us to the train station but direction was given to take us to the wrong station. Luckily, we discovered it in time & had to scramble into another taxi. The breakfast staff also seemed a bit overwhelmed. They seemed taken aback & flustered when we asked for hot water (come on, we're Americans but surely a lot of the Brits ask for hot water for tea, haha). For omelette, there was only a choice of cheese or ham. No basic vegetables such as mushroom, onion, bell peppers. I'm going to chalk all this up to the pandemic & challenge in staffing with experienced staff.

She could have easily given up and say "sorry" but she did not and persevered to get the job done gracefully. Anita and Laurent are amazing at their job when it comes to kind customer service! Truly 5 stars are not enough to express our gratitude to Anita and Laurent for assisting us and for doing a great job at the reception desk. To summarise our disappointing experience: - Polite email communication, but once we arrived and didn't speak fluent French (I always start by speaking French out of politeness, but it is a bit rusty), the man at the desk made a rude comment and his attitude cooled considerably. - We were assured by email that we could charge our electric car, which is one of the reasons we booked this hotel, but we were told on arrival that this was not possible. No effort was made to help us, even when we explained the necessity of it for being able to drive. - We have a mini dachshund (sausage dog), so not a huge or scary animal by far, and at no point were we told that he could not go into the garden. The male owner burst out of the doors when he saw me in the garden with my dog and yelled at me in front of all the other guests to get him out of there. It was shocking to be threatened, and I spent the rest of the stay in our room - I'm a seasoned traveller and no wall flower, but I did not expect this level of confrontation, humiliation, and verbal abuse. - Our room was shabby with cheap furniture, not especially clean or comfortable, and the bathroom is cramped and not vented. But there is air conditioning, which is the one plus. - Wi Fi is non-existent, and, again, the owners didn't seem to care. There were a bunch of people huddled in the lobby with their laptops and tablets trying to get online, and the owners made comments communicating their annoyance with people in that space. Another example of no service provided and guests being treated with disdain. - Pool is green/dirty, and there is a lot of potential with the garden, but it is not looked after well. Such a shame, as this could be an incredible place. I felt cheated staying here, as it does not deliver what it promises at all. The owners are clearly out of their depth, and the one consolation is they probably won't be in business for too much longer if they continue to treat their guests in such a deplorable manner. In the meantime, I strongly suggest you find another place to stay. We found La Mere Germaine to be a great restaurant, and they have rooms as well.
