If you're into rich history, beautiful decor, and a central location, this place is hard to beat. The best part of our stay was definitely the atmosphere and location. You're literally next to the Palais des Papes and walking distance to everything in the historic center. The hotel itself is like staying in a French time capsule--gorgeous antiques, serene courtyards, and a feeling of old-world sophistication throughout. Our room wasn't one of the ultra-grand ones (no canopy bed or soaring ceilings), but it was still large, elegant, and very comfortable. The bed and pillows were soft and cozy, and the room was spotless. Service was warm and helpful overall, although we did have one hiccup--after requesting a bucket of ice to chill a bottle of champagne, no one ever brought it, even after two calls. We eventually brought the bottle to the bar ourselves, and they were happy to help. Not a dealbreaker, but a surprising lapse for a hotel of this caliber. One thing we'd suggest improving? The towels. They looked beautiful and high-end, but they weren't soft at all. Upgrading to plusher, spa-quality towels would bring the comfort level up to match the rest of the experience. Safety-wise, we felt secure the entire time, but future guests should know that there are quite a few homeless individuals in the area. It didn't feel dangerous, just something to be aware of while walking at night. Bottom line: If you're looking for elegance, location, and a taste of historic France, Hôtel La Mirande is a standout choice. We'd love to come back--hopefully next time in one of those iconic high-ceiling rooms!

The innkeeper Stephan is very helpful and sweet as can be. The morning breakfast is all homemade. I was not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. It's only about 10-15 minute walking distance from the main intersection, and the area its in is full of shops, restaurants and cafes. I wish I got to stay out here longer! (That's the other thing, if you're ever out here in Avignon, try and stay for at least 3 or 4 days so you can take advantage of the nearby towns on a spiffy moped ((unless you hired a car of course, in that case, 2 days at this location is just dandy)). Their elevator wasn't working at the time (that was a huge pain, lemme tell ya), but we managed just fine. They provide wifi with a charge, so you're better off going by the maccas down the street to use theirs. They do offer breakfast if you need it (but there's plenty of cafes and boulangeries down the street), and this location seems to be popular for small groups and large families. The facilities are minimal, but you'll hardly be in the room anyway. It's easy enough navigating through the streets here, the only thing is I'd avoid the back streets really late at night as you'll likely be asked alot for spare change. Our room by European standards was alright but to someone who is used to American hotels, I felt a bit cramped. It seems like the king size bed took up the whole space. The floors are also a bit funky. There are steps within steps in any given floor to get to any of the rooms. The bed comfort was adequate. As someone said before it can use some upgrading. The staff here are also very very helpful. There was a railway strike when we were in France and Michael at the front desk went out of his way to find us alternative transportation since our original train booking was canceled and it seems every other scheduled trains to Marseille (our next destination) was canceled. As to the the breakfast, it was pretty good. We had the usual European cold cuts, fruits and croissants and whole slew of other bread choices. Coffee on the other hand was just bleh. I could never figure out how to use their espresso and cappuccino maker so I made do without. If we are ever in Avignon again, I would come back and stay here again despite the cramp space.

Special thanks also to Anita, also from the reception desk who made the impossible task of making dinner reservations for my family at the last minute at a great restaurant, Le Moutardier du Pape on Christmas Eve. Anita went out of her way and very patiently contacted a half a dozen restaurant to find the best restaurant in town to accommodate my family for an exceptional Christmas Eve dinner. She could have easily given up and say "sorry" but she did not and persevered to get the job done gracefully. Anita and Laurent are amazing at their job when it comes to kind customer service! Truly 5 stars are not enough to express our gratitude to Anita and Laurent for assisting us and for doing a great job at the reception desk. It's because of them that we would love to visit this beautiful hotel over and over again and it's because if their service that this hotel gets it's great reputation in customer service. Be careful when you come to Avignon though. We made it here right when there was a festival and it is super crowded. The rooms are very clean, but a little small.
