Jeffries is a huge hardware business that stocks all the standard nuts and bolts plus a huge selection of outdoor planting, perfect for this time of year, and has a large gardening section at the rear of the store. Recently I was after some fence protector and after a visit to a huge DIY shop felt frazzled by the choice in products, colours and price. One trip to Jeffries and I got exactly what I needed, no fuss, a great price and I parked my car at the rear of the store to load up. I also recently discovered they do key cutting. They stock a wide selection of pet products. The beauty of this place is that they've always got what you need and know exactly what you are asking for. On the very slim chance they don't stock what you are after they know where you should go to get it. Amazing staff and service.

In summary it's a big hardware store that sells all (or at least most) of the nuts and bolts you need for your home and they have a big garden centre. If they don't have what you want then the staff can tell you where to get it. The shop is mainly for people who want to buy anything to do with DIY for their home. I came in here in search of a few things for home and, I don't mean to offend anybody by stereotyping, as a woman in a hardware store I didn't know where to look first. The staff were friendly and polite enough however to put me in the right direction. If you need any hardware for your home and garden then it's worth giving this store a visit.

Let's be honest, eating dinner at a garden centre usually sounds like the sort of things your parents or grandparents (depending on your age!) would do, however, this little slice of African themed heaven is a far cry from what you'd normal expect of such a place! I've not made it to Africa, though have traveled widely in Asia, and the outside felt totally authentic, being similar to bars and restaurants I've eaten in abroad. Even outside, you are sheltered from the rain, and inside, where the buffet is served, it's warm and cosy, with live music of an evening, and the most amazing spread of food. I've been a number of times since that first dinner, having returned in the day with my dog, as it's dog friendly if you're happy to sit outside - they even bring a bowl of water for our four legged friends! I've had lunch there, and the most fabulous afternoon cream tea, and cake, whilst the choice is limited, what they offer is very tasty (and I'm a fan of cake!) I loved it that much the first night, that I've refused to go there for a meal again, as I'm going for my 40th, which happens to fall on a Thursday, and looking forward to sharing the experience with close friends. The service is always friendly. It's not always super fast, as it runs on Kenyan time, so this isn't the place to go in a rush. Indeed, why would you? It's such a delightful experience that it deserves to be cherished. Oh, and the shop is pretty fab too! So yes, dog friendly, fab food, great shop and friendly service!

I bought a Chinese lantern plant from here, which kept me great company in my first year at University (until I forgot to water it and it died). As well as plants, Ambleside sells aquatic pets at great prices. I have a tropical tank at home, and many of the fish I've bought originated from here. They also sell little terrapins in store, which I'm always tempted to purchase. Ambleside is the home of Earlswood cheese, which can be found at Moseley Farmers Market. They have a much wider selection here, and sell my favourite the Warwickshire Truckle. Other delicatessen-type food can be bought from the garden centre too. It is a little pricey, but tastes delicious. At the back of Ambleside, you'll find a cafe/restaurant serving a wide range of herbal teas, coffees, cakes and snacks. Again, the cafe is a little costly, but you'll definitely be tempted to try something different, because the menu is very unusual. I bought a cup of Buddha's Eyebrow tea from here once. It was quite peculiar! Of a night, the cafe opens out into a restaurant. I am yet to sample the evening menu here, but I do intend to very soon. On your way out, you'll pass the counter, and you might end up missing the friendly dog that lives here if he's sleeping. He is great with kids and gets very excited to greet new people, which adds an extra memorable touch to this garden centre.

Based in an old Victorian building you enter through an old wooden gateway into what can only be described as a two bay parking space. To get into the shop you clamber a few high stone steps and traverse a rickety parquet floor that makes you sad it isn't fixed and set in place. You will be surrounded by old metal racking that is sadly not for sale and decommissioned shop fridges but when you finally get inside you'll be surrounded by an array of organised boxes of stock for a good rummage. From DIY necessities, kitchen equipment, a tupperware aisle, stationery and toys it at times is a time capsule of days gone by with the stock they have. This is where I usually come if I need any new textiles (cushion covers, curtains, bedding etc) and it's a great place to pick up a bargain. They pretty much have everything you could want that's made from fabric. With all the crazy savings a person can make here I'm guessing their profit margins are small and I wonder how they make money. As of the amount of textiles they sell the shop can sometimes look messy but that's a minor issue that can easily be fixed. As well as this there aren't many staff and I've often found myself waiting a while to be served. The staff are friendly, helpful and have a good knowledge of all the materials, which is great considering I am clueless when it comes to knowing what material to use. They help you chose and measure all the textiles, if you want. I would recommend Textiles direct to anybody who needs to buy any fabrics and other things made from fabrics (covers, bedding and curtains etc.)
