What a fantastic find!…read more I was starting to think that Grenoble was awful for sushi options after a trip to ayako at Caserme de Bonne, where food was expensive and of poor quality. Ozenya is a non-assuming little place which could easily be overlooked when working around the centre. Not noticing this little Japanese deli/café would be very sad though... You first enter a little shop which sells everything from matcha chocolate and pocky to ramen noodles and take away bento boxes. You go through into a little cute room and find yourself in a cosy little room with Japanese books and tables with flowery table cloths. The waitress was bright, bubbly and incredibly beautiful. I spoke to her after, and it turns out that she speaks Italian, French, English and Japanese (mother tongue), so is also a real polyglot. She handed me and my Japanese friend some menus, telling us that the 8 euro plat du jour was a noodle dish. There were limited choices, which personally I think is usually a good thing as it means that products are made lovingly and with fresh ingredients. There were two onigari options, one with salmon and the other with konbu. There were a few varieties of sushi, including inari (sweet deep fried tofu) pouches which are vegetarian. Then there were some side dishes like miso soup, steamed rice and wakame salad. There were also plenty of teas on offer. Being two students on a budget, we both went for the inari sushi (3.50 euros) and the wakame salad (3.50 euros), and asked for some tap water. We got two quite big inari on each little plate and a good amount of salad. The salad was very tasty and seasoned well with sesame seeds and oil. The inari was excellent, very fresh and the rice was very fresh and tasty. The presentation was perfect and everything on my plate looked very good. Everything also tasted good. If I had had more money I would have happily gone for one of the specialty Japanese sweets, they looked divine. I will be back for tea, cakes, and that Japanese veggie curry dish of the day which the waitress mentioned they sometimes make!

Never mind Les Halles de Paul Bocuse…read more This is THE great gourmet market in Lyon. It is a massive massive street market on the banks of the Saone. Being on the river, it is as scenic as can possibly be imagined. The market goes on and on and on and on and on. Every kind of meat, every kind of fish, every kind of shellfish, every kind of vegetable, every kind of fruit, every kind of cheese, every kind of bread, every kind of pastry, every kind of spice, every kind of charcuterie, every kind of artisanal prepared food, Any thing you can think of in French cuisine: It's all here at the Marche Saint-Antoine. And they have it at multiple stalls - so you can pick and choose which vendor you like. Want to make pigeon stuffed with quince? They have the pigeon. They have the quince. Do you want fromage blanc made on the Savoyard model rather than following the Lyonnaise model? You have that option and six other choices as well. Have a French cookbook you read but can't use, since you can't find about a third of the ingredients? All those ingredients are at the Marche Saint-Antoine. The prices are very very reasonable. (The contrast with Les Halles de Paul Bocuse is particularly striking on the price issue.) If I lived in Lyon, I would set my cooking days to be the market days at the Marche Saint-Antoine ... Even if there was a perfectly good smaller market in my neighborhood.

This is a foodie's paradise ! Fresh everything, cheese, seafood, bread, fruits and vegetables …read more Also restaurants you can sit and eat too. Everything looked so fresh and delicious. I wanted to buy it all but I'm only here for one meal and that was breakfast.. we found a little coffee shop with outstanding brew and we bought pastries and savory treats from one of the bakeries. The French onion pastry was amazing and the cheesy/ chicken on a baguette with mushrooms was delicious. The couquettes and the beignets were also lovely and fresh. Service was quick and you can pick up some good deals by then end of the day. We went when they opened on a Sunday at 1pm so I guess it was more brunch we had. It's an amazing place to walk around. Also fresh flowers and spices and herbs, charcuterie and lots of oysters! Definitely wanna get here if you like to eat and the amazing Paul Bocuse who it's named after who was a legend in the culinary scene here holds this market to a very high standard. Quality products and well worth the money.

Going to LYON, FRANCE akaThe Gastronomy Capital of the World??? Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is a…read moreMUST! The late, great Chef Paul Bocuse IS Gastronomy and IS Lyon. This food hall features the "Best of the best of Lyon and other regions of France. You can dine in at a few restaurants inside, feast on some of the FRESHEST seafood, charcuterie, foie gras, Lyonnaise specialities, and be sure to save room for dessert and sweets from some of Lyon's top patisseries inside. Workers inside are very polite and very accommodating, also very appreciative of our attempts to communicate in French. It is Gastronomy overload here as we visited two days in a row. We feasted on Oysters, shellfish, charcuterie, wine and cheese, and even Lyonnaise specialities like Andouilette and Salade Lyonnaise. Lots of variety here. Price points for food items here are justified, even cheaper than what we pay in the U.S. This is definitely the food hall of all food halls!
