It turns out they have 2 locations too. One is in the nicest hotel in town [ and lots of the art in the hotel common areas is from the gallery ] and the other is on Broad street. I'd say the Broad street location has a funkier vibe, but don't miss the bar in the hotel, just around the corner from the gallery.

But this time the experience we had at Mary's gallery was amazing-we had never gone in before-I do not know why but now I know we will always stop there. They have incredible art for all tastes and for all budgets. Katelyn was extremely helpful when we told her what we liked. She helped us make a decision, wrapped the paintings extremely carefully so we would not damage them on our way back home. She also gave us copies of the paperwork-just the nicest experience we have ever had in an art gallery. We learned a lot about the artists whose works we loved. We will definitely be back! Thank you Katelyn and Mary.

The…read morecheerful coral historic building on State Street houses hundreds of original, whimsical works, including jewelry and pottery. One of my favorite artists featured there makes homemade paper light sculptures in fascinating shapes (a giant jellyfish, for instance). Another, Don Dudenbostel, takes x-ray-like photographs of flowers and natural objects, the results of which are eerily amazing (see pic). When your eyes glaze over after viewing yet another sunset-on-the-marsh scene at umpteen other galleries, head over to Nina Liu's for some fresh inspiration and great nibbles (for last night's walk she made brussels sprouts soaked in sesame oil and featured dips from Doe's Pita), graciously served by the proprietor herself. The building, the Poinsett House, keeps going up and up, and Ms Liu opens all four floors of her gallery/home for the artwalks. She even allowed us plebeians to wander in her back garden, a lush little courtyard with a tiny pond and some great sculpture. Nina Liu was one of the first to arrange the gallery tours that later became the artwalks, and as far as I'm concerned, hers is the best stop along the way.

I bought three pieces that Nina shipped for me after already giving me a great deal. I'm madly in love with them and think of Charleston each day I stare at them. I feel so grateful and will make this gallery a stop each time I visit that magical city.

Some pieces are interactive with a piano (please only play if you know how), swing, stone stacking, a seating that invites you to relax as a magnetic ball cuts through sand. I've been at various hours and days and have been fortunate to see one or two artists in their studios at work. They're always so kind and open to you being there to watch and ask questions. If you're looking for an opportunity to stop by I recommend going on the first Friday of the month (5-8p) during the art walk. RLS, along with many other galleries, will be open to the public and have wine tastings. It's a great social event where you can meet with the locals and artists.

Artist cooperative galleries rarely get the love and attention they deserve. As a fervent…read moresupporter, I always make a point to seek one out wherever I travel. There is no better place to buy high-quality, locally made mementos, and affordable ones at that! Charleston Crafts is no exception. If I had unlimited funds, I'd clean this place out. Their selection runs the gamut of art forms and medias. Metal, wood, paper, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, glass, it's all here and then some. I spent a good half hour just perusing everything they have to offer. I've never seen a more extensive display of diverse artistry at a cooperative gallery. The Lowcountry is home to a ridiculous number of talented craftspeople. So when you're out and about downtown, don't forget to make a pit stop at Charleston Crafts. What better way to remember your trip to Charleston than with a unique craft or two? They're way cooler than mass-produced keychains and magnets. And if you're a local who has yet to visit, what are you waiting for?! Go support your local artists!
