I use to like to stop in while in Mobile. However, they don't really carry any antique pieces anymore so......I find it just boring now.

While I was still in Chicago, my wife started a dialogue with Tom, a very very nice representative from Chavis. Chavis was the only one who had the Speed Queen washer/dryers we needed, and Tom knew that, and was super friendly and accommodating. He warned me that I would have to order them as soon as possible once in Alabama, because, like everything, it would be delayed due to supply chain problems. It only took a month to order them and get them here, but by the 4th week we were swimming in dirty laundry. I sent Tom an email and told him this, and he squeezed me in for a faster delivery and installation. Not only was Tom professional and incredibly helpful, talking to me before I'd even shown up here in Alabama, but he was super helpful even after the sale, helping my wife pick out the right appliances for future purchases. All of this was sight unseen. I've never met Tom in person, and we've not even been to the store yet. Tom did all of this through a very lengthy, very friendly email exchange. I'm so thankful for Tom, because in a place where it's hard to even get a plumber or HVAC tech to come out, Tom hooked us up with some very hard-to-find appliances surprisingly quickly. He was also very funny, and very personable, cracking jokes and making a very tough move easier before we'd even gotten here. I just can't thank Tom and Chavis enough. You have a life-long customer in me.

In addition to delivery, they hauled off the old appliances. Previously, we had bought our appliances from Sears, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Chavis Furniture (and Appliances) made forever loyal customers out of us and we live on the Eastern Shore. Worth the drive from anywhere.

If you like bargains, and especially if you're into redoing furniture and things, definitely check this place out. I was driving back from lunch one day and passed the place and saw my dream nightstands sitting out front. I didn't have time to stop so I went back the next day. There they were, sitting right out front again, and he gave them to me for $10 each! They were a beige color with brown glaze and a little teal around the top. They didn't have tops. No big deal. I saw the finished product in my mind and knew they'd be perfect. Two cans of gold spray paint and 2 mirrors cut the next day, and they are absolutely stunning! I also bought 5 pretty gold lanterns for $10 for the set. I planned to hang them around my pergola with citronella candles in them, but one ended up on one of those gorgeous nightstands. He also had a beautiful oak king size bed frame and dresser and mirror. He only wanted about $250 (I think) for the dresser. He also had appliances and small appliances, lamps, dishes, and various furniture. Think of anything you'd put in a storage building...he buys contents of storage buildings when people don't pay their storage fees. You can find a little bit of everything there and the prices are super cheap. He only takes cash, so make sure you take plenty. I'm sure this will end up being a frequent stop for me.

Of course, Hubs and I (well mostly Hubs) will research something TO DEATH before making a final decision. So needless to say, we went to no less than 7 different furniture stores in the area to find what we needed, that meet our needs on quality and price. We finally settled on a piece that we liked at Home Place that we liked and was at a good price. The store itself is very nice and the salespeople aren't too pushy, and are there when you need them. Pretty sure we got a deal where they took the tax off as well. The warehouse is directly behind the store, so everything is in stock. We have a truck, so we could take care of getting it home ourselves and not have to worry about meeting a delivery person. They let my husband open the box and inspect the piece before accepting it (in the warehouse) and we actually ended up opening up 2 boxes before we found one we liked. No the furniture was not in poor condition, we are just picky. The warehouse guys had no qualms with our finickiness. Overall, a great shopping experience.

I even bought an extended warranty from Daniel N. the asst. manager. In Nov. the sofa started falling apart with the motor also making noises. I wasn't going to worry about that with my wife heading into her last weeks of life. After all the warranty was good I thought. It wasn't. My wife passed away after 46 years of Marriage on Jan 4 of 2026. At the start of Feb I informed Daniel of the situation and got my niece to text him photos of the sofa, per his request. I have got the runaround since then. I've called once and my niece has called, texted, and gone to the store numerous times. They are rude, hardly return phone calls and lie. I talked to Cindy at corporate who said she would call them and call me back. She never did call me back. My niece called Cindy and received the same scenario. They finally sent a man to see what parts it would need about 4 weeks later. I still have not heard from them about 3 weeks later. A lawyer friend went by the store Fri. April 3 and talked to Daniel. He informed her the part would not be in until the middle of April and the sofa I bought was discontinued by the manufacturer. With all the anguish I've gone through trying to get my life together after my Wife's death this is one torment I do not need. I pray no one else has to go through the anguish I have been put through the last TWO MONTHS for a warranty they paid for. Hanks daughter should be ashamed of letting her daddy's company go so downhill by hiring inferior non empathetic employees. They want the sale with no customer service after. The warranty situation is absurd. I will be warning people the rest of my life to not buy from Hanks. I probably will get this settled in court since they don't know how to minimize a problem and help people.
