I learned some tips and tricks for styling vintage hair (I'm rarely seen without victory rolls of some description so seeing how the professionals do it was super helpful) and left for my dinner reservation with a gorgeous set and front roll. If you have a special occasion coming up and are looking for something a bit more classy than a "messy up do" I could not recommend these ladies highly enough.

Minutes walk from Partick train station, BW Beauty is a great wee beauticians offering everything from waxing and massages, to manicures and full make up. As I'm away on holiday next week, I booked myself in for a mani-pedi, knowing that Becca would have her work cut out for her with my chewed up, uneven nails. After soaking, exfoliating, massaging and shaping (heaven!), Becca paints on your colour of choice and cures your shellac ensuring up to 3-weeks of chip free nails! I'm pretty new to shellac, so I found this unbelievable and akin to witchcraft, but Becca assures me everyone knows about it and I'm just behind the times. My pedicure took almost an hour as I enjoyed my poor wee feet getting pumiced, exfoliated and pampered, before having matching shellac nails applied. I am also in love with the barbie pink foot-grater that Becca uses, and now I can't stop stroking my baby soft heels... Although BW does an express manicure for if you're in a hurry (30mins approx), if you have the time i'd recommend the full works. Becca really does an amazing job of making the experience feel luxurious and personalised (and great artists can't be rushed!). If you're looking for great service and lots of friendly smiles then definitely get yourself along to Partick soon!

I was offered a tea which ended up having floating white pieces in it. Overall very unhappy with my experience and do not recommend.

I wanted to get my hair dyed blue. I really, really did. I wanted a kind of teal-y ocean-y peacock…read moremermaid type blue hair. My brown hair was boring and it had to be fixed. Thing is, if I did it myself I knew I'd ruin it, but which hairdressers do you go to with such a non-standard request? After stopping several people in the street and asking them, three had said Number 659, so off I went. During my first visit we just had a chat. I described what I wanted, some ideas and suggestions were discussed and I got a patch test (a dab of hair dye behind my ears to check I won't have an allergic reaction). I returned a couple of days later to say "I'm not allergic to your hair dyes! Hurrah!" I booked an appointment, after struggling to find a time when I could give up the whopping four hours it would take to get everything exactly the way I wanted. At this point they mentioned that, as a new customer, I could expect a 20% discount. Excellent. Finally, the big blue day arrived. I was welcomed and offered coffee which I expected to be instant, made in the salon's kitchen, but noooooo. These guys are so extra, they popped next door to the coffee shop to get it for me. I'm guessing it came from The Great Western Sandwich Co, but it's definitely Dear Green which I am very happy to sip while I wait for my hair to be cut. Soon I had the attention of two amazing stylists - one to cut and one to colour. My tresses were roughly chopped first, with the promise that they'd be tidied up once the dye had set in. The brown was stripped away, the peroxide rinsed out and a first, pale blue dye was applied. This was so if the brighter dye faded a little, it would fade to blue, not to peroxide blonde. More Dear Green coffee, then the brighter blue. Then my hair was straightened and, as promised, "tidied up." My word, these guys take perfectionism to a new level. Finally, a gentle wave was put through the hair and my new amazing look was complete. Boring hair banished, blue hair welcomed in its place. Hurrah. I went to pay, "um... we don't take card." Ah. The nearest place to withdraw cash is Penny Black, the post office down the road. I rushed out and returned but they didn't seem to mind at all that I hadn't had the foresight to bring hard currency with me, so I guess they get this problem a lot. One final comment: I'm used to salons pushing me to book my next appointment, trying to get me to come back and tidy things up within 4-6 weeks. I asked my stylist when I should come back and she said "oh, everyone's different, see how you like it in a few weeks and just book in whenever suits you. You won't need such a long appointment next time." The honesty there is so nice and just added to my great experience. I've never known such an amazing salon.

The atmosphere: This is a super hip salon that offers a wide variety of services (hair, nails, makeup, tanning, waxing, massage, etc). They play rad music throughout the space and its always mashups that you want to download yourself. Upon checking in at the desk they take your order for tea or coffee and get it from the shop next door. The service: I have never left disappointed. They offer 50+ CND shellac colors and about 12+ different glitter options. The possibilities are endless. Ashley is a pro at what she does and has an awesome memory too. We also pick up right where we left off the previous time. The prices: Shellac manicures or pedicures are only £20 and that includes the removal or your current polish. That's an absolute steal, especially in the West End. On Tuesdays they run a special were nails are 50% off! £10 for nails or toes is unheard of! (Tuesdays definitely fill up fast! Booking at least 7 days prior is necessary.) This is a cash only salon too. Overall, I love Number 659 and will continue to be a loyal client of theirs!

I don't dislike getting them but I generally feel like I don't get good advice and just end up getting a trim. I'm also just lazy about it. I've since had my hair cut twice at Polly & Molly and have been really pleased with the results both time. I've still only really had a trim but it was just a much nicer experience than I've had. The small things make a difference. So many places end up straightening my hair really flat. They still straighten it but it's bouncy flat instead of dead looking flat. I've also just generally felt really well taken care of and feel more comfortable to the point where I don't postpone my haircuts to the same extent. On top of this, the prices are reasonable and they have a student discount.
