No1 Currency Exchange

After…read morechecking into the Morgan around the corner, I made my way over to this exchange and converted the money I needed for my time in Dublin before moving on to Northern Ireland. The man behind the counter was courteous and professional, carefully counting the bills to ensure I had the correct amount. When I returned to Dublin towards the end of our trip, I finally converted the sterling I had been carrying since Derry to euro, since apparently, Galway had no places that exchanged period. I didn't realize that -- and that's the case with any exchange place. The only thing you can't do is convert coins. So unless you want to save them from reminiscing about your time in the country, make sure to spend the coinage. But I have had good experiences the two times I used the exchange, so no complaints from my end.

They state that they don't charge any fees, which technically is true. But you know, a business needs to make money. So, there will always be a high and low average for conversion rates for the day. You'll be offered the rate that leaves the largest margin for them to be able to take a cut out of. Which for what I need, totally fair. Even if you're just walking in, book the conversion online on your phone first because that's how you'll avoid any additional fees.

The area has almost everything. Transport - Luas, Dart, Bus direct to the airport, shops like Spar, Mark and Spencer, Fresh, CHQ, Starbucks and many many more good places. The restaurants: Musashi, Eddie Roket, J2 sushi, Freshii, Wine rooms, Harbourmasters, Ely etc. The one minus of the place is that all shops are closed at 10pm and I miss Boots.

But, just like a paranoid-delusional Kevin Costner heard in the 'Field of Dreams': "If you build it, they will come" - and come they did. A lot of this was presumably to do with the IFSC's corporate tax rate being two and a half per cent lower rather than a load of dead baseball greats emerging from betwixt the crops, but whatever works for you.
First Rate Bureau De Change

I travel a lot and I'm a real tightass. As a result, Ive shopped all over town for the best…read moreexchange rates! Time and time again I come back to First Rate on Westmoreland Street. I've seen some places match their rates but I've never actually found lower than here. There's the added benefit of an under-used cash point across the road - handy for withdrawing Euro to exchange. Plus First Rate has an actual shop front with the rates in the window and holds a good range of obscure currencies on site (so you can leave it to the last minute to get your Kopecks or Ringgit or Rupiah). I like the fact that the staff wear uniform and there are security cameras. This is a pleasant change from places where you go up the back to a pokey desk and feel like you're doing some sort of shady narcotics related transaction.
I must say, I was very very impressed with these guys…read more Even though they had nothing to gain financially from assisting me (they didn't have what I needed), they went out of their way to help how they could. So I was looking for Indian rupees. I called every single bank I could think of. Answers ranged from "Eh, I'm not sure - check our website?" (Bank of Ireland), to "No. We don't have them. I don't know where you'd get them. Can I put you on hold? Hi I'm back, what did you want? No, I don't think we have that. I have no idea." (AIB) to "Ehmm, I'll take your number and get someone to call you back that'll know (beeeeeppppp)" (Ulster) So it turns out that Indian rupees are a restricted currency, meaning you can't actually buy them outside of India. You can if you order them quite far in advance, but generally speaking, the advice is to take cash with you to change and your ATM card to withdraw money once you're there. The dude also directed me to O2 where you can get a money card which is useable all over the world. All in all, extremely helpful, in fact way above and beyond. And very very much appreciated.

It is a little on the pricey side but I like how the smoothies are always nice and cold. This Zuma is ideally located in the middle of Jervis so you can grab a quick smoothie in between your shopping.
