During my single days, my best vacations took place in Cuernavaca (approximately 80-90 min southwest of Mexico City, in the state of Morelos). I remember the hotel (spa vacation, yoga, crafts, lunch by the pool during the day and then going out and drinking micheladas (Negro Modelo, Salt, Lime) and dancing in bars in the night. Most of all, I remember feeling safe to go out at night by myself and the fact that I was not Mexican was a non-issue as Cuernavaca has many international students and travelers. Fast forward 2 decades later and I finding myself at a loss of where to go for the holidays (Christmas + New Year's) - wanted to be in warm weather, wanted to do something different with J and I remembered there are MANY language schools in Cuernavaca, so I decided to search online and found a Trip Advisor article listing "top" language schools. ASLI was one of 3 potentials and I emailed all 3 schools a list of my numerous allergies and requirements. Figured any school that was not deterred by me, would be a school that could meet my needs. From the first email, Maru (academic director) and Francisco (executive director) were Heads Ahead of the other schools in terms of responsiveness and willingness to talk to me about my allergy concerns. Maru and I did a Skype call where I went over my requirements in detail and she was able to come up with a homestay family (who amazingly had no pets inside their house) and even asked host mama to take pics, which she did and sent them to me. I asked for a few references and Maru gave me multiple references for repeat students within the past 2 years. All the references were glowing. So, I sent Maru a deposit via PayPal (and ASLI is the only school of my top 3 choices that did not require % of tuition payment up front) approximately 3 weeks before arrival. Upon landing at MEX (note: book directly with Aeromexico and save $$$ vs Delta and don't bother with primer clase) and I emailed Maru and asked for the driver's mobile she responded, "All is taken care of." Edgar, in charge of transportation and admin, arrived and immediately we were at ease with his efficient, friendly and knowledgeable manner. He pointed us to the best currency exchange kiosk (2nd floor, CIgrupo, note: count your coins before you leave) and we walked to the car park and were on our way. During the ride, he gave me examples of how to say my food preferences in spanish. Homestay: We arrived at the home of LL (wife) and FL (husband) and their 3 sons. My Jaw Dropped. This house (stone & brick), tastefully decorated for the holidays, was magazine worthy. Wow. Dramatic wide, curved staircase, art work in recessed shelves, the main dining room table had a glass top over a sand pit + shells. 2 refridgerators. I had space in the upper cabinet for my non-perishables that I brought (as emergency food - didn't open/touch at all) and space in the freezer and fridge for my perishable food. To say that LL is a good cook is an Understatement. She created numerous vegan/gf/sugar free/salt free dishes for me for 2 meals a day during our 2 week stay. (Note: I could not eat outside food, so was dependent upon her cooking.) J was amazed at how much I ate. I observed how LL cooked (she could publish a cook book) and how she did things like store cilantro and tortillas in the fridge. One day she whipped out her comal (pan with a depression for frying) and tried a recipe (fried potato/rice balls) from her brother and it was fab - the puffs were perfectly fried, not oily and took less than 30 min! I wrote down her recipes and took many pics of her delicious dishes. Note: she is also a fantastic baker - J sampled her decorated cookies and was impressed. Our large bedroom (that opened up to a patio) had its own bathroom and it was tidied daily. There were bugs, yes, but not overwhelmingly so. It was inspiring being in the presence of a hard-working family (blew my mind that the 2 youngest sons were in high school and had jobs b/c they wanted to work) who also hosted family gatherings (J is in the Christmas family group pic :). They welcomed us as part of the family. Yet, we had privacy and noticed they respected each other's privacy (though not much physical space for the sons once we and then another 2 students arrived) and truy enjoyed being with each other (they would gather as a family in the late evenings around the kitchen table). I appreciated the family's willingness to converse with me and their openness in sharing details of their lives and helping me understand the many different ways to say "Hi, how's it going?" in Spanish and what was appropriate to say to friends versus your mother and teaching us how to direct taxi drivers to their house. On my bday, LL and her family surprised me by singing 2 songs to me at 7:25a (before breakfast) and each person hugged me afterwards. I was SO touched. Incredible first home stay experience.
