The short and sweet version:
DON'T GO TO THIS NEUROLOGIST. THE ONLY THING THEY CARE ABOUT IS GETTING PAID, NOT PROVIDING PROPER CARE OR THEIR PATIENTS WELL BEING. THE RECEPTIONIST IS THE MOST UNPROFESSIONAL AND INAPPROPRIATE PERSON I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS.
The full story:
I have been going to this Neurologist for five years, and have never been particularly fond of them, but didn't want to deal with the hassle of changing doctors.
The receptionist has always been unpleasant, but nothing in comparison to what happened recently (mentioned later). The office only takes cash, which is quite inconvenient. Their equipment is very much out of date (looks to be from the 70s). Mostly, the wait time is long, even with appointment. On multiple occasions I have scheduled an appointment first thing in the morning, and have found myself waiting outside their locked office door (along with other patients) up to twenty minutes PAST my scheduled time, for them to even open up the office. Unacceptable.
Dr. Ghoshal is not fantastic, and doesn't seem concerned about the quality of care he provides, or the well-being of his patients.
When I first started going here (for Epilepsy) he prescribed me a medication which caused me to have seizures every six months. I have never had this pattern, and after about a year and a half I finally realized what was going on, and realized that it might be the pills that I have been taking. He was aware of all of my episodes. Since he wouldn't change my prescription himself, I took it upon myself to do some research and finally asked him to switch me to Keppra. This has worked well for almost 4 years, until I lost my insurance and was unable to afford it. During this time I had a seizure, and went back on the same medication once I got insurance (as I still had refills).
The straw that broke the camel's back:
Once my prescription ran out, he required me to be seen prior to refilling it. I scheduled my appointment to fit my incredibly busy schedule. They told me that I would soon need to get another referral from my primary care physician, but didn't give me a time line. I figured I'd go see the Neurologist to get my refill and worry about getting a referral once I had my medicine.
The morning of the appointment I drove to school (SFSU) and left early so I could get my much needed refill. I drove from SF to Carmichael, where the office is located. When I walked in, the receptionist was nowhere to be seen, but Dr. Ghoshal was standing by her desk. He said that someone will come out soon, and continued to stand there, not saying a word to me. He's not particularly friendly, and quite cold.
She finally came out, and asked for my name, and than said "oh yeah, you", and asked if I had a referral. After I said "no", she proceeded to tell me that I'll need to get one within 60 days because my insurance changed. I said that I don't know when I'd be able to get one, as I'm in SF five days a week, at which point she told me that I won't be getting seen that day. When I told her that I'll figure something out and get one, but I need to be seen because my prescription is out, she told me "you already told me you don't have time, and if we don't get a referral, we won't get paid by the insurance, so we won't see you until you give us a referral".
I got on the phone and tried to get my primary care physician to give me one, but he required to see me in person in order to process this, for which I didn't have time.
Because my schedule is incredibly packed, and I need these pills, my mother-in-law offered to call Dr. Ghoshal and reason with him, maybe get just a few days worth of pills, until I get that referral (this was on Thursday, my appointment with the primary care physician is scheduled for Monday). She spoke with the same receptionist (to my knowledge the only one that works there), and tried to press the importance of me not missing any dosages, to which the receptionist replied with "she's not our problem, she's no longer a patient here", and then proceeded to tell my mother-in-law that I am irresponsible, and how she is a bad mother and has not raised me correctly (I think she thought she was my mom). She did not let my mother-in-law have a word in the conversation and kept telling her to "shut up", and ended the conversation with a "shut up and go to hell", and proceeded to hang up! read more
