I'd had my hands read by a medium in SoCal and was disappointed by the minimal information from my hands that she'd given me, and the maximum information she sent me regarding astrological charting. Still looking for answers from my hands, I picked Jennifer because of her location (close to me here in NorCal) and Yelp reviews. She spent roughly 25 minutes silently studying my hands with a light while making copious notes in her notebook. Then she lay her pen down, took a deep breath and gave me her interpretations of what my hands say about me. The entire session (including the study of my hands, her interpretations and then my input at the end) lasted an hour and a half. I didn't prompt her with anything about myself prior to this reading except my profession (for scheduling purposes). Her insights into who I am and the problems I have been struggling to overcome were succinct, spot on, and delivered in such a gentle and compassionate way as to move me to tears. Her warmth and acceptance made it a safe space. I was relieved to have the chance to not only validate what she'd told me, but to speak about my concerns. I'm at a point in my life where I am enlisting the help of professional guides in all the different areas I need them. It's been 11 years since the last time I wrote a review. What could possibly inspire me to want to…read morewrite a review after such a long hiatus? One word: therapy. I still remember the day I reached out to Esther requesting for her psychotherapy service. I had just ordered all these self-help books via Amazon that were piling up on my nightstand, but my mind was all over the place and I couldn't find a way to focus on where to begin. If you googled the phrase "woe is me", the top result would probably be a photo of me. I needed someone to help navigate me through my anxious thoughts, someone to provide me with the right tools that would let me better articulate my feelings, someone to boost my confidence, but most importantly someone to just help me get a grip on my entire mental wellbeing. Fortunately shortly after reaching out to Esther, she was able to take me in. I remember feeling wary coming into our first session. I had worked with a few other therapists prior to her, but I didn't feel like I got to where I needed to be with them. I remember during that very first session I was experiencing so much anxiety and overthinking so many events in my life. The simple question of "how are you doing/what is going on in your life?" sent me into a spiral and I remember just crying and pouring out so many bottled up emotions. By the end of our first session, we practiced a cognitive diffusion exercise together and I remember immediately feeling a sense of relief. I felt so much more hopeful than at the beginning of our session and that if I gave it more time I could overcome the mental obstacles that were holding me back. What really solidified my decision to stick with Esther was her hands on approach. With other therapists, we would have a full session of chatting, maybe do an exercise or two, and then pick up again the following week with nothing to hold me accountable with what we practiced. But with Esther, she would assign me homework that would consist of more than just reading. Her assignments would really challenge me to get out of my scared little comfort zone. Then the following week she would always follow up to make sure I really completed that homework. Six months later of consistent therapy with Esther, I can confidently say I am in a much better head space. She's provided me with so many tools that really helped build my confidence and foster a better relationship with myself through emphasizing the importance of self care and just really speaking more kindly to myself. It sounds so simple, but it honestly is a lot of work. I'm so glad I got through it with Esther. She has such a kind, compassionate, and most importantly a nonjudgmental demeanor. I always felt safe during our sessions and that I could speak my mind no matter how silly I thought I might sound. She really helped boost my confidence and made me believe in myself and that under all this "woe is me" there truly is an amazing lovable confident person.

After meeting her in community and hearing her speak last year, I had the pleasure of attending an afternoon workshop with her a week ago. One of the things I loved was that she created a space where women at all levels of experience could learn, grow and expand, and in a way that felt good to be together. She combines verbal teaching with experiential lessons, so we had both the knowledge/context as well as the felt experience, which helps so much with integration into daily life. As a healing professional myself who works with women around sexuality and embodiment, I enjoyed relaxing into the space that Jan created so that I could fill my own cup, and, I would feel enthusiastic about referring less experienced women to work with her as well. I have never written a Yelp review of a therapist before, but this time I believe it's important…read morefor other people to be able to make an informed decision. I was a client of Emma's twice a week for almost 4 months. If things in the therapy are going smoothly, she can be kind, caring, and witty. I think she would be an okay therapist for someone who feels mostly stable, has relatively secure attachment patterns, and struggles with issues like moderate anxiety, adjustment to stressors, uncomplicated grief, personal growth related to identity, etc. I would not recommend her for anyone hoping to process early trauma, shame, and deeply rooted attachment wounds. She told me explicitly that it was okay to email her in between sessions. She responded kindly to emails about insecurities and paranoias, but then when I sent one expressing anger (in a way that I intentionally tried to make solely about my own feelings and not attacking of her as a person), she said I shouldn't email her anymore, and if I were to do so again it would be "aggressive and intrusive." This abrupt change in boundaries triggered past traumas around early childhood sexual abuse, where the abuser said that what we were doing was "okay" and "good," until years later when I started showing signs of anger and confusion, and he said we had to stop, and implied that I had invited/initiated the abuse in the first place. I do not fault her for me being triggered. The harm was done in her response to the trigger, where Emma did not show any interest or curiosity in hearing about what was activated for me (did not even ask further about what was being triggered), and instead focused the session on justifying herself, talking about her needs, and insisting I show awareness of the impact emailing had on her, all of which I was unable to fully take in or respond to when in such a regressed state. I was further triggered by feeling put in a position where the person in power told me it was my responsibility to adjust and take care of their needs by not crossing the boundaries that they had initially said were okay. I left the session half way through in order to save myself from the vulnerability of sobbing in front of her like a five year old, when she had just shown me that she would not attend to anything deeper than the surface level content and her own justifications for her inconsistent boundaries. I think she is a good person at heart, with good intentions. But she has some serious growth edges around consistency (both emotional and logistical (e.g. frequently changing session time just minutes before session was supposed to start)), predictability, and boundaries, all of which are crucial to building safety when working with trauma. If you need a therapist who is able to really get down into the muck of it with you, while keeping you both safe, without judging what that muck looks like, Emma might not be the person.
