The tea room is housed in the old boiler room of Smeaton House (now sadly long gone). It is not smart but it is very relaxed and cosy, the staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the baking never disappoints. I also really like the fact that the nursery is just that wonderful plants, none of the usual 'garden centre' ephemera. The nursery staff are also extremely welcoming. I recommend Smeaton unreservedly except that I don't want it to become too popular as I love its peaceful atmosphere!

It also has a nice wee cafe where they serve Ben & Nanani Coffees and a good choice of snacks, sanwiches and cakes. I choose the bacon roll because it as a horrid wet cold day and it was the first thing i smelt as i walked through the doors. I also ordered a cappuccino. The cappucino was good as was the bacon roll, but did have to ask for brown sauce as wasn't asked at the counter when I placed my order. There was no problem as the server brought a decent portion in a wee dish out to the table. The bacon roll was tasty. The tearoom did feel a tad bit cold and only has one wood burner in a corner. I did think it was a wee bit expensive - 2 coffees, bacon roll and a scone with butter and jam came to £9.65. But the coffee and the bacon roll did warm me up. i think my mum enjoyed her scone and coffee too.

Then there are all the displays of gifts - perfumed candles, cards, ornaments etc - and a wide range of kitchen accessories and crockery. There is a coffee shop which has a big, spacious area for seating that overlooks the country park. Quite a good selection of food including soups, snacks, main courses and of course cakes, but they have an annoying habit of starting to clean up while you're still eating if you visit near the end of the day. Nothing like making you feel unwelcome! Despite commenting on this, it's continued so feel that customer care is perhaps not top of the agenda for some staff. The country park includes a model farm and covering 65 acres, with a play area and nature trails. There is also a barrel train and tractor and card rides.There is ample parking and that's also been a venue for the Angus Farmers' Market when we visited one Saturday. A trip pre-Christmas is lovely when they have the displays of lit trees and decorations. Free wi-fi is a new feature in the coffee shop and there are often special offers mentioned on the website.

It's too easy just to jump on the bypass and hit up…read moreB&Q, Homebase or even Tesco's for a couple of plants, but if you just turned right instead of left, and headed towards Haddington, my, what a treat you would find. Now admittedly, it's not on the beaten path. You have to head to the old a1 (A199 now), turning off at Haddington, past East Fortune until you get to East Linton. Turning off at East Linton you will work your way through the town to the other end, wondering where the hell you are going and still haven't got there. Even when you get to the entrance, there is still the driveway up, which takes you through fields of sheep and what looks like dog show paraphenalia before you finally pull up at a wooded copse, and see the sign nestled against a stone building, partially hidden by the trees. The nursery that sits behind is a treasure - as Julia Katharina B. notes, it's just stunning grounds, and provides so much more inspiration than the plastic stands at your average garden centre. The plants look delightful, amazing and loved. You feel like an explorer, wandering around the greenhouses and the walled garden looking at all that potential you can take home to your own space in the sun. There is also a cafe there, but I didn't try it. I really just came for the plants.

This has to be my favourite garden nursery ever…read more First of the guy was super friendly and super helpful as i was asking loads of questions on different plants as I'm getting the back garden done in summer and cannot wait! Eeeeeek shreeek excited! The nursery is surrounded by high walls reaped with oh so much history from the estate. They have traditional green houses too which adds charm. The have an awesome herb selection - the plants look pretty healthy so bought a few to bump up the herb garden. The have apple, pear and oh so many more fruit trees. A good selection of pots to enhance any patio! Plenty of perenials to choose from too. Oh boy i could and actually could go spendithon next time I'm there. And whats more they have a tea room to think about what you are going to buy and mull over cake and a cuppa whilst doing it!!! Happy days it is a Smeaton nursery!
