As someone who has donated to Locks of Love 4 times in her lifetime, I am used to having my hair long and flowing. It also means any hairstyle I add to it quickly gets old, because I'm not in the habit of upkeeping it. (Ponytails and buns are the only hairstyle I know how to deal with in humid Miami).
I initially found Vintage305 on Groupon, but decided to wait it out as they were a new salon at the time. I followed them along on Instagram and Yelp until I felt confident in venturing to the salon because I was ready for a real style this year. 2020, amirite?
I called for an appointment, and they were able to fit me in on a weekend with a male stylist. When I arrived early for my appointment time, the male stylist had just started to cut another customer's hair. The owner apologized and said that she would swap me for Shakarie, who was about 20 minutes from completing her current customer's cut and style. Being a Saturday in a pandemic, I had nowhere better to be, so I took a seat with a glass of water (bubbly was also an option) and fiddled around on my phone. After a photo shoot of the completed hairstyle, Shakarie sanitized her station and ushered me over. This girl is incredible - not only is she nonstop, but she's doing it in heels. After a brief discussion about the low-maintenance style I was hoping for, I agreed to have her chop off 8 inches of my hair.
She shampooed, conditioned, and dried my hair with such care, I was in heaven. The cut and style itself took about an hour, and throughout it, Shakarie was friendly, talkative, and put me at ease. (Hey, it's hard to see your hair feather to the ground after years of watching it grow). Afterwards, she also had a little photoshoot outside with my new layers and dimensions - I felt so empowered with less weight on my head, and upon viewing the pictures, I realized she still managed to keep a decent amount of length (but in a healthier way).
Prices are incredibly reasonable by Miami standards, and I walked back to my car with a rose in hand. Me time was made special by the wonderful ladies at Vintage Rose.
I loved how my hair turned out, and as it's grown out, the little side-swept bangs she had styled are still working for me. I'm excited to be back, though I may go back to old habits and not stop in for another year or two. In any case, I'm following Shakarie on IG and might be bold enough one day to get some color done!
