They usually have a higher percentage of British produce than Tesco. They are cheaper than the supermarkets for a lot of things although they can't really compete with the large chains for 3 for 2 deals and the like. For some reason their peppers are always more expensive than Tesco and they are of a very poor standard. All of the other fruit and veg is very good though. Another problem is that they don't have paper bags for their mushrooms and you have to use a plastic one which then makes the mushrooms go funny. Sometimes the number of staff is greater than the number of customers which means that you can get served quickly, but peak times such as around lunchtime it can get quite busy.

Many come from local suppliers. They claim to stock over 150 cheeses from all over the world, although I haven't tried to count them. Personal favourites include a heavenly camembert and the mature stilton. Prices are substantially below the eye-popping sums asked by the periodic French food markets held just outside on the Town Hall Square, so it's always worth visiting Kevin's stall first. The stall also sells butter, a good range of eggs, jams, pickles and preserves. Don't confuse it with The Cheese Shop on Northgate Street, the destination for small-scale specialist cheese sales. There is also a delightful Spring inspired window display which as an ex-theatre designer I really appreciated! Apparently the owner's wife changes it seasonally. Lovely touch. I ordered a mozzarella, fresh kale and sundried tomato baguette and it was delicious. The bread was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and the contents were so fresh - it was gorgeous. I then treated myself to a peppermint tea and a white chocolate and pistachio cookie - such an unusual and classy combo! Loved it! The *only* thing I could complain about was that the infuser for the peppermint tea leaves was a little loose so a lot of the leaves escaped into my glass but I was able to fish them out easily and the tea was lovely so I really didn't mind :-) I only wish I was based in the business district of Liverpool so I could frequent this lovely place more often. Another example of an independent business getting it just right.
