It was one of the most frightening experiences our family has ever faced, but from the moment she arrived, we were surrounded by an extraordinary team of healthcare professionals who treated her with compassion, dignity, and exceptional skill. I especially want to recognize nurses Putnam and Ana, Dr. Khan, and PCT Rhea. Each of them took the time to explain what was happening, answered our questions with patience, and cared for my aunt as if she were their own family. Their kindness and reassurance brought us comfort during an incredibly uncertain time. I would also like to recognize the entire Rapid Response Team (RRT) and everyone who responded during her stroke code. The teamwork, urgency, professionalism, and calm demeanor they demonstrated were remarkable. Watching them work together so seamlessly gave us confidence that my aunt was receiving the very best care possible. I was seen in the Ascension Saint Joseph-Chicago ER on 6/29/2025 by Dr. Lim (per my visit record). I came in with right-hip discomfort after a bed collapse at home and asked to make sure nothing serious was going on. After the visit, I reviewed my chart and later found entries that do not match what I reported during the encounter. For example, statements appear in the notes that I did not give, and important context about the bed incident was missing. On 9/25/2025 my patient portal also showed missing items. I saved date-stamped screenshots. Because this affects my ongoing care, I formally asked the hospital to: * give me a written amendment decision under 45 CFR 164.526; * preserve complete audit data (who accessed/changed what, when, and how); * provide an Accounting of Disclosures; and * place a temporary chart banner noting a review is pending. I did not receive a clear "granted or denied" response by the date I stated. The lack of clarity and the portal gaps have negatively affected my care and delayed next steps. I have filed a complaint with The Joint Commission Office of Quality and Patient Safety and am pursuing my records through proper channels. I'm sharing this so other patients know to check their notes and portal carefully and so the hospital can improve documentation accuracy and timely responses to patient safety concerns. I have been here for imaging and mammograms many times. One difficult appointment had me both concerned and very uncomfortable (not anyone's fault; just the nature of what had to be done). Sue, the technician, was so thoughtful, thorough and supportive. I will never forget her kindness and professionalism. She stayed with me, rubbed my back when it hurt, and dried my tears. St. joseph is an older hospital but kept clean and staff were personal and seemed to like their work. I had a " stone " removed from my lower left Bile Area and the pancreas was blocked so the stone had to be removed asap...After assessment and Cat-Scan...surgery occurred within 24 hrs of me walking in thru ER...I was under sedation professionally so I can't say what happened...other than the pain was gone... This was the ONLY 2d time I stayed in a hospital, the 1st was tonsillectomy, age est 12. The food was great, the testing thorough, the nurses - save for 1- were terrific...the curved, clean windows allowed us to look at the beauty of Lake Michigan, the trees, the various birds flapping around and the peace that it brought to the situation. read more

I was on the Headache and Migraine unit, for two weeks. The level of care was superior. The nurses were kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. I never had one single problem getting help. It was almost as if they were attempting to anticipate my every need. And as for doctors, unbelievable. Dr Torphy was my doctor, and he is amazing. Quality care, wonderful bedside manner, made sure that he involved the patient in all decisions. This particular unit involves all disciplines in the care. So I saw a cardiologist, an endocrinologist, two hospitalists, and an acupuncturist. I felt like my care was holistic. From what I understand, they are working on expanding the facilities they have now. From simply medical care to adding units for bio feedback and other methods of relaxation and coping mechanisms. I must add that I read many, many reviews on this hospital before I decided to agree to go there. The average review was 1 to 2 out of five stars. The care was the biggest part of the problem, in those reviews, but another problem was billing. Billing for services that were not provided and a number of other things. I'll have to keep a watch out for that. Because for two weeks' stay, that is an awful lot of money piling up. I'm very worried about that. If I encounter any troubles, I will update my review. While I'm not crazy about getting my annual gyne exam, I was very pleased with the service from Lindsey Syed. She was very friendly, professional, caring, and took her time examining me and asking questions about my well-being. She noticed a bad rash on my left arm, which I told her might have been from a tetanus shot the week before. Immediately went down to see my regular doctor Simovic. Unfortunately he was on vacation but his back up Dr. Langner squeezed me into his already fully booked day, examined me and gave me a prescription for the allergic reaction which went away in three days. How lucky am I? Also kudos to the front staff, Miss Angela Bond, who was extremely kind and diligent to squeeze me in. read more

Walked in to the Emergency Ward on a recent Saturday night for lower abdominal pain about 10pm. Within a few minutes, a nurse took my information then proceeded to a room where I was hooked up to monitors. Then started to take blood and all. Within a hour, I was wheeled up to get a CT examination. The evening staff was very attentive. When the pain was unbearable, the staff gave me some great drugs to ease the pain. About 1am, I was wheeled to my room for the next five days..... at least the room had a great view of the lake. I was diagnosed with Perforated Diverticulitis. The attending doctors, nurses, supporting staff, and housekeeping were overall very professional and friendly. The only negative comment would be about having someone assist me with hygiene. Once, I brought it to the doctor's attention, that was taken care of right away. On the fourth day, I was finally able to start to eat (mostly liquids) since the doctors were concern how I would react. Luckily, everything was going okay with me after the surgery. Overall, I had a good experience at this hospital. I hope I won't ever return for an extended stay...... again. read more

The staff was rude and unprofessional. The first question I was asked was what my religion was and nothing else about medical history, what medications im on, if I self harmed, felt unsafe when I fell into a dresser, or even what happened. Before they went any further, still not asking any questions, they asked for my insurance card and left me in the room for a good 10 minutes with no communication. I ended up needing stitches and didn't find out until he started putting the lidocaine in my hand. When I asked about aftercare instructions, they said I could read the pamphlet. I was unsure if I hit my head when I fell, and expressed concern about not remembering details of the fall. They put me in a room with two doors and people constantly were coming in and out of the room multiple doctors or nurses (still unsure who cared for me in any capacity) would come into my room and gossip about other patients. I did not receive any sort of head examination or pupil check and we all but had to beg for someone to check my head. Once someone finally came in to check my head, she talked to somebody else the entire time with the door open and said that she found blood in my hair and on my scalp, but could not find the source and said I SHOULD be fine. When I initially came into the ER, the blood from my injury had splattered all over my face, neck, arm and fingers. None of those areas were checked. And finally, we asked if my stitches were dissolvable, they said no and that I should probably look at a YouTube video when I think it's time for them to come out. And the cherry on top!!!!! Less than 48 hours later one of my stitches already popped out because the knot was not secured tightly. read more

I love this hospital, friendly people and people who care about the patients! But I have to complain about doctor MD Maura Stefko. My husband have e painful lump on his abdomen and urgently needed a doctor to help him. Doctor Maura Stefko has been checking him and sent him for ultrasound of testicals instead abdomen?! Ultra sound technician said to my husband that she'll be scan his scrotum but he needs a referral for the abdomen because he has a hernia. And long story short, we contacted doctor Maura Stefko trough MyChart, she said that she would send my husband to a general surgeon who will "fix him" even without an imaging or scanning?!?!She issued a referral for General Surgeon . We was upset with her and we visited another doctor who give us a referral for CT scan of the abdomen. Now we will pay 2 scans for the same thing and we lost 2 weeks of our time and my husband doesn't work 2 days/ no pay.I don't know what to tell really. We are with Saint Joseph Hospital 11 years, all of my family and we never had any problems, we trust and love doctors start with amazing Marilyn Aden, very professional doctor Chandra, well educated doctor Simovic, smiling doctor Emily Lombard, our best friend doctor Nora Bucher, our great NP Mary Maginot etc... I went into the ER and stayed in the hospital overnight. My care here was overall good, with no abusiveness nor severe neglect. The staff were very competent and professional with me. They were very patient with me and supportive. There was a lot of waiting alone, and there was no food for me overnight, but unfortunately that is pretty standard. It is an area of improvement though, hospitals should have food available overnight for patients. They made a mistake on my chart, but unfortunately that also is a common problem. The room was way too hot for me so that also is an issue, I could feel it was way cooler when I went into the hall. They should adjust that, maybe put in fans. The room could also be better decorated to make it homier perhaps. In the morning I got a lot of attention from specialists which was appreciated. Every medical professional I saw was kind and attentive and I felt trusting. There were a lot of people with rainbows on and I felt like it was an LGBT+ friendly hospital. Food was good and the lady who made the food was very kind and helpful. Housekeeping asked before they cleaned which I appreciated. I was charged $51,878 for a 5-hour visit!!! This is a predatory medical facility, plain and simple. I had my own terrible experience with them, and after exhaustive research have found a pattern of disgruntled, poorly treated patients who feel victimized and taken advantage of financially. Amita happened to be the closest medical facility to me on a morning that I was not feeling well and am now dealing with life changing medical bills because I had a CAT scan and an EKG along with a blood thinning shot (which I did NOT need) that JUST happened to cost $29,000. They have "graciously" offered to reduce my fee to $38,302.88 before they release my debt to a collection group which will harass me and attempt to damage my credit. I requested an itemized list of my total bill, and specifically the list for my $29,000 pharmacy bill on 12/07/22. It has been 3 weeks and I have yet to receive any documentation. However, they have made time to repeatedly pressure me with weekly calls with reminders of my "serious medical debt." I am currently a patient that has been admitted with SEVERE Colitis!!! I am in a severe amount of pain and the Doctor on call will not help me with h pain. I am not a repeat patient. I am not an addicted asking for a fix. I am a retired teacher that came here for help this afternoon. I am not sure how a hospitalist that takes an oath to help parents with care and kindness. I will lay here all night, crying in pain and I have no help or recourse. No wonder this hospital has such low ratings. I should have headed the warning, but I was in such severe pain I chose the closest medical that could diagnose my condition and bring me some comfort. St. Joesph's Hospital has gone to hell. I was supposed to get a specific MRI. The doctor's assistant repeated several times to the scheduler the type of MRI needed. When I arrived, the MRI tech apologized because St. Joe doesn't have the equipment to do this type of MRI. I am and have been in pain. I did all of the pre registration. I took a day off work. This is not my first problem at St. Joe. The hospital has gone down hill. The management of St. Joe's is incompetent. The schedulers are poorly trained. What a shame... Avoid this hospital at all costs. My spouse came here one day for increasingly significant anxiety/panic attacks hoping for care and guidance. She was asked to sign some papers to be admitted for care, only to find out she was coerced into unknowingly committing herself to the 6th floor Psych Ward. They immediately took her clothes, her personal items, and her phone. They put an ankle monitor on her and threw her into seclusion with locked doors and armed security guards. She was not allowed to call me for help until 6 hours later when it was too late. She was crying and scared and shown absolutely no compassion or empathy. We were refused access to the papers she signed. Her requests for release were ignored for 5 days as she sat in isolation. This is the exact opposite of the care that she was looking for and a living nightmare that only made her anxiety worse for in the most traumatic way. The staff here showed absolutely no remorse for what they were doing to her which was to push mind numbing medication and locked in a cinder block room with no contact with the outside world. To make things worse, they did not give her any indication of the process or when she could leave. This is cruel and barbaric. We absolutely cannot believe this is legal, much less the approach taken by a facility with religious affiliation. You have permanently scarred my wife for life for what you have done. read more

They won't give me my medical test slides, and I may have cancer they can't treat. I had a lumbar biopsy done in August '23. It revealed that a circular hole was being eaten away in one of my lumbar vertebrae. They couldn't figure out what was causing it, but they have specialists who *might* be able to help in the far suburbs. I have multiple disabilities and do not have a car. My primary wanted me to get a second opinion. I went to Northwestern Hospital. They need the actual slides from the biopsy. I began trying to get the slides on Oct. 4th. It is now the beginning of November. I have made dozens of polite calls throughout the month. It took more than a week for someone to finally communicate that neither the Medical Records or Imaging departments have those. I have to get them from Pathology. Pathology is not one of the departments listed on their website. I have been given 3 different phone numbers for Pathology. Despite repeated attempts at all hours of the business day, I have never had anyone answer any of those numbers. Nor do the voice mail recordings identify what department I was reaching. I have communicated with two Patient Advocates. They were friendly and seemed willing to help me. The first one bumped my case up to a second one. She left me a message asking for details, which I could leave on voice mail. I did. It's been a week, and I haven't heard anything. There's a very real chance that this is some form of cancer. I don't want to go through the biopsy procedure again just because St. Joe won't give me my slides. I am not at all certain that my insurance company would cover a re-do. I have made two more phone calls today, leaving voice mail because no one ever seems to actually answer their phone. I know these are busy people. But they don't return messages, either. I'm at my wits' end, and losing a lot of sleep because it might be cancer and valuable time is slipping away. read more

I'm currently 28 Weeks pregnant. Came in to the ER to have myself and baby evaluated for any injuries. I was "checked in" about 7-10 mins after arriving. Due to me being pregnant I Was sent upstairs to From the Emergency Room to the floor for Labor and Delivery... once inside my room the nurse enters the room; no knock or greeting any time she came to check on me or get information for my file, and she was not the most friendly. My bed sheets didn't look fresh and they were ripped. It was just an off putting experience for me especially if this is the place I had to deliver my baby (I decided on home birth). And to have had been there for four hours I had no tv (not necessary but would've helped time pass) no company was allowed in the room with me, and barely was checked on during my time in room. Just Because this is what I experienced hopefully this would not be the same for you, I hope anyone who has to go here has a better experience than I did. read more

I had surgery on June 4th, upon coming to my post op surgery on June 18th to have stitches removed everything was fine. However, since then I have had to come back 3 times (June 18th, June 24th, June 30th) to remove sutures after multiple doctors communicated they were all out! It's was very concerning and inconvenient for me to keep returning to the office to have all sutures appropriately removed. The doctor did not even know how many BLUE (as you can see in photo) he stitched in from surgery. To blame it on not seeing because of my hair is horrible. From the outside, it makes it seem as though the staff is incompetent. Prior to post op, my outpatient experience was awful as well. From the failed communication to family in recovery, left adhesive all over my body which left marks, to improper use of materials, and letting me walk without a wheelchair after being under deep anesthesia, and lack of communication for what to expect post surgery. Overall, I felt rushed after my outpatient surgery. A nurse even said "there wasn't enough beds for amount of surgeries" to my mother which is unacceptable to tell a family member. In addition, no apology has been said after inconveniencing me for the last 3 weeks due to lack of communication, removal efficiency, and wait times in office. After this horrible experience, I probably will not be using this hospital ever again. read more

I had surgery here at St Joseph's last month and I was so scared because of having to have open surgery and the whole Covid-19 situation but i was in really good hands. They make sure you take the covid test at the hospital 3 days prior to surgery. I Stayed 3 days, the nurses were VERY friendly personable and nice. Food was better than I thought it'd be, especially breakfast. They kept the cranberry juice flowing. A month later I am healing as expected. Went to St. Joseph ER Sunday, February 5 because of back pain which affected my ability to walk. I was treated and discharged. I experienced severe shortness of breath when I tried to walk to the exit. I told the ER receptionist who said he'd tell the nurse. I waited an hour and a half. No nurse. I tried again and got to the exit. Shortness of breath is associated with cardiac issues so I'm surprised that I was ignored, especially considering that I am 78 years old. read more

This hospital/medical group has extremely predatory billing practices. Simple bloodwork cost over $700 with insurance. I called multiple times to ensure the cost of an ultrasound which they said was $75. I paid this upfront but after the services I'm told the total cost is $4200 which after insurance is still another 200+ dollars. And I was billed an additional $100 for a ten minute phone call. I was also charged separately by the "Imaging company" for the ultrasound and that bill was sent to a debt collector within one month of receiving my first notice. None of the itemized bills make any sense and their extremely difficult to reach billing department offers no help at all. Go literally anywhere else. read more

I spoke with the "social worker" (actually rude and ANTI social) at this facility that could not have been more abrupt and unhelpful. I am taking care of a stroke victim sibling that was a long term patient, treated post fall for a leg fracture at this hospital. Now the cast needs to come off but being bed bound, getting her to the Halstead affiliate clinic is a problem. In that her home is steps away, it seemed simple enough to wheel chair her to the hospital. The (anti) social worker would not help reminding me she only had time to help existing patients. I guess even though this patient has spent weeks there and was casted there, no more help can be given. I was disgusted with her lack of interest in helping. read more

03 May 18 Chicago , Illinois I recently had occasion to have minor same day surgery performed at St. Joseph Hospital. It was an excellent experience. Everyone with whom I had contact maintained a high degree of professional decorum. I arrived early , breezed through registration , and was sent to the same day surgery unit. I was greeted with welcome smiles and tender care by Jocelyn , Amanda , and a host of others too many to name. Dr. Aftab , the anesthesiologist , introduced herself with a smile and walked me through the procedure in a reassuring voice. I was transported to the O. R. and the next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery a short time later. A couple of hours thereafter I was released and on my way. As everyone at St. Joseph Hospital was so friendly ( lots of smiles ) and professional I would highly recommend St. Joseph Hospital to anyone in need of medical treatment. I came to the Emergency Room with extremely high blood pressure that was increasing. I was frightened, alone and very anxious. There was no one in the waiting area and the lone receptionist was filling out paper for a lady. I explained that I needed to see a doctor quickly and told to sit down. My anxiety and breathing grew laborious and my heart beat harder I sat there alone. When at last I did see some medical staff, they were indifferent. I More than anything, I wanted someone to care. Someone to hold my hand and say that they were there for me, that they were going to fix this and not to worry, everything will be fine. That's ALL I wanted. I was alone, frightened and in tears.
