Definitely one of my top choices for sushi! Bonus because they are open for dine-in later than many nearby for a Friday night! The space is inviting and dimmed for a romantic atmosphere and the service was attentive and friendly. We shared a bunch of things and not only did everything taste fresh and amazing, but also was plated beautifully! The veggie tempura was lightly battered and crispy and the shrimp fried rice was so flavorful. We shared the berry good, king salmon, spider, and tiger rolls! They were all so good! I was skeptical about the berry one with tuna and strawberry together... SO glad we tried it!! A such a unique flavor combo with a little spicy kick! I'm surprised I haven't reviewed Asahi yet! I've been going here for years. It's a small, but very clean and beautiful restaurant. The food is top notch and I have always had excellent service as well. It's fun sitting at the sushi bar and watching their skilled chefs rolling the sushi. A lot of people do carry out from here too. Their miso soup is so flavorful! Sushi is fresh and amazing. I'm a fan of rainbow rolls. The Bibimbap is to die for!!! I highly recommend it. 2025-01-18. Asahi Sushi. Clinton Twp, MI. Asahi is one of those places that kinda gets me every time I revisit. I remember the first time I went there in 2011, the sushi and sashimi was good and memorable. The prices were high, but the food was good. Since then, I find myself returning every few years because I have that fond memory of my first impression. But every time I go, it seems that the food is less and less up to par. Have my tastebuds changed over the years? Or has the competition stepped up and left Asahi behind? Asahi is located at the north end of the Garfield Landing plaza located at the NE corner of Canal and Garfield (next to Vince & Joe's). There's plenty of free parking out front and the entrance is wheel chair accessible. Inside the place gives old Chinese restaurant vibes with dim lighting, dark carpeting, and vinyl upholstered chairs. The menu is quite extensive, and they also have ordering sheets for sushi and sashimi. Prices here are still quite high and competitive with restaurants like Osaka (which has become very commercial) that have better ambiance. Tonight I felt like Korean and we came here for the Bibimbap. We also order a couple of rolls, and a soft shelled crab. Soft Shelled Crab appetizer. I remember liking this the last time I had it, but this time it was different. The breading was much heavier instead of a light dusting and this time it was more Panko style which turned out quite greasy. 2 stars. Sun Flower Roll. An inside out roll of white tuna, salmon, yellowtail, cucumber, avocado, and kanikama (imitation crab meat), topped with masago (capelin roe) dyed in three different colors. This is a very standard roll in terms of ingredients and unfortunately this is not what we got. When the roll came, the white tuna was red tuna, and there was no yellowtail. I confirmed with the wait staff by asking them what the roll was and they replied that it was indeed the Sun Flower roll. While it was decent, it wasn't what was advertised. 3 stars. Volcano Hawaiian Roll. This roll contains, spicy tuna, red snapper, avocado and cucumber, and is baked on a flaming skillet. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it came out wrapped in tin foil and aflame on a hot plate. The flames took about 2 minutes to extinguish and after peeling back the foil, the roll looked nicely seared. But when I took and piece and opened it up, it wasn't as appealing as I expected. I thought there was going to some science defying show here where the inside of the roll would look perfect and the outside would be seared and torched. While the outside wasn't too disappointing, the inside was (see pics.) The spicy tuna and red snapper was some sort of processed paste as if they blended it together, and the flame fully cooked it. It's rare that I give something 1 star, but this was a huge disappointment and I would never order this again. Bibimbap. One of my favorite Korean dishes, it's rice baked in a hot stone pot. The rice burns to a crisp where it meets the pot, but doesn't stick to it. The rice is topped with a variety of mixed vegetables, your choice of protein (beef, chicken, or tofu), and a fried egg. I always go with the beef. This is not a fancy dish, but it's one of my goto's when it comes to Korean foods (along with Bulgogi, Galbi, and Pork Bone soup!) While it was lacking in beef (maybe a couple of ounces of meat), the flavors were there and I still enjoyed it. 4 stars. Overall, the service is still nice, but the ambiance is dated, and I'm finding the food slowly degrading. I'll probably still come here for Korean food, but do have more and more reservations with regards to the Japanese cuisine. The sushi and sashimi are still good, but that's about it. Let me tell you--Asahi Sushi is excellent. The presentation is stunning, the flavors are bold, and every bite is a delight. I celebrated Galentine's Day at Asahi Sushi with friends. Although the restaurant was crowded, the wait time was reasonable: 30 to 45 minutes. Our servers were very friendly and attentive. The night's highlight, Asahi Sushi, is a must-visit if you're looking for fresh, flavorful sushi in a lively atmosphere with excellent service. It was my sister's mission to order enough rolls to receive the sushi boat. And did we succeed? Absolutely! While I can't remember everything we consumed, I do recall my must-haves: spicy tuna, California, mushroom, Crazy Boy (fried), Crazy Girl (fried), and Tropical (fried) rolls. Thirteen rolls later, our dream was realized, and the glorious sushi boat arrived at our table. First of all the sushi was absolutely delicious and the presentation was spectacular. Several times I would see sushi go out and just think "Yumm." The service was very good for how busy they were, they were always staying on top of each table. The restaurant atmosphere was very organized and quite pleasant. We haven't been here in a long time, mostly because everybody else wants something other than Asian food. My wife surprised me by suggesting this place, so I was happy to return. The location is easy to miss as part of a strip mall. It's small, and a trip to the bathroom feels like you're wandering through an abandoned warehouse. But, don't let appearances fool you. Asahi Sushi serves up some amazing food. Everyone gets an earthy cup of yellow miso soup. Tasty, and since when is anything free anymore? My wife ordered the chicken bibimbap. A spicy barbecue sauce is served on the side, with a traditional assortment of ingredients in the bowl perfectly executed. There is something magical about the rice that fries to a crisp at the bottom of the bowl. Having the sauce separately gives you options regarding how spicy you want it. This is a huge bowl. It's big enough to feed a small family, as long as the family isn't that big and isn't that hungry. No, seriously, there is plenty for today and tomorrow. After perusing the menu, I couldn't *not* order the Crazy Boy Roll, mostly for the name. Crab and avocado sound amazing, but are a little bit bland. However, this is a deep-fried roll, so the exterior is crispy, similarly to the beautiful fried rice on the bottom of the bibimbap bowl. These crispy fried nuggets chew differently from normal sushi, but I like it. The flying fish roe sushi was true to its name: the roe kept flying out of the sushi wrapper. I can't imagine thinking thousands of these little things could possibly be contained by a sushi wrapper. But, I still like the taste. The mackerel sushi was fresh, and they really delivered on the smoked eel, as they always do. Years ago, I could not possibly have imagined turning a freaky looking creature like an eel into something delicious, but here it is. The house sake was a slightly sweet pear flavor, but very drinkable. But, I always order Sapporo when they have it, and they do have it here. The service was good, and in such a small place there's no problem flagging somebody down. I said at the beginning that this place is easy to miss. I personally think this is the best sushi spot in Clinton twp area. Great selection of sushi and wonderful service. It is a smaller space so seating can fill Up quick however it is worth the wait if there is one. The sake tree flight is fun and refreshing if sake is your thing. Miso soup is flavorful and a nice start to the meal. Wide variety of rolls to choose from. Some of our favorites are the TNT, crunchy, and the dynamite. Sushi was pretty solid. My friend ordered two veggie rolls and I had the spicy Cali and salmon roll. Next time if I'm back I'd probably get the regular Cali roll; there were too many pepper spices on the spicy Cali; tasted overwhelming. The salmon roll was great though, nice size and fish was fresh. My friend enjoyed her rolls as well. Service was really mehhh. We had the male server who was very nice and polite. The females were quite rude and non responsive. My friend is vegetarian, so she was worried that our sushi would be placed together on the plate. One of the woman server came to pick up the empty miso soup bowl, and we ask her if she could make sure our rolls were separated. She literally said something along the lines of, "I don't know what you ordered you'll have to tell the other waiter... I'll go get him for you." Understandable. Long minutes went by, he never came back. Had to wave him down to make the request. So glad we found this gem. We have been looking for a good sushi spot since we moved to Michigan. Coming from California where there is an abundance of good solid sushi spots, it's been hard finding one. My husband's family was visiting, and we all wanted to grab dinner somewhere. We came across this place with promising reviews and decided to give it a try. We came in around 5:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday with a party of 6. We waited less than 5 minutes while they were setting up a table for us before we got seated. Our server came and offered us drinks to start. We started to scan the menu and there were so many options for different rolls. There were a few that stood out and placed an order for them. The atmosphere is cozy and cute. I did feel a little crammed with the surrounding tables but not a big deal. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was busy, but we didn't feel forgotten. We waited a good 15 to 20 minutes before our awesome order came out. We were in awe when we saw the presentation. We weren't expecting it at all. After a few pictures we all started to dig in. Not only the presentation was great, but the rolls were also so good. We only ordered baked rolls because I'm pregnant so I'm only judging on the baked or fried rolls. The rolls were tasty, not a thick layer of rice like most sushi restaurants and enough sauce to complement the flavor. I hate it when restaurants drench the rolls with eel sauce, too much. I sat at the sushi bar since I was by myself and was pleased to see their work space was very clean and they were meticulous about their craft. Adventurous sushi eating isn't my thing, though I'm branching out more! I got a Spicy Tuna role, AAC role and the shrimp tempura role. All were tasty, though they tended to fall apart when being picked up with chop sticks. So, that was disappointing and kind of sloppy. But, the food overall was good. I love coming to this place with my friends. The high quality sushi, the affordable and filling food, the kind servers...it is all amazing. They have a large variety of sushi and other dishes too. They have HIGH quality sake that is very affordable to every anime fan wanting to try out delicious sake. One time I ordered a Diet Pepsi with light ice, and every time I was nearing the end of my drink, some kind lady( who was not even my own server) came and got me a new glass of LIGHT ICE Diet Pepsi. To start, I'd like to say that we got here pretty late. It was after the Paranormal Circus in Sterling Heights. Everything was fantastic. Absolutely delicious. Piping hot and fresh with our sushi. IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD! We started with a seaweed salad and it was such a great portion for two. (I ate it mostly by myself, but it was a great size) and some miso soup too! We had one sushi roll, the Crunch Roll. It was pretty great too! (Not pictured, I totally forgot and just chowed down!) Both our main dishes were steaming, even after it took me a few minutes to finish my appetizer, my partner already wants to come back for more Bimbibap. I would go out of my way, and I live near Hazel Park, to dine here again. The food was terrific and the wait-staff, even better. Everyone was very friendly and our waitress and the rest of the staff were incredibly attentive. For the end of the night, we definitely were not the only ones in this little gem and it was worth it. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this place, but decided to round up since I did end up having a really good meal here. I was in the area and wanted stop at Vince and Joe's Market, but it was such a mess there with Easter being this weekend, I said to heck with it and figured I'd grab lunch instead. After looking at my phone, I realized this place was right next door so I stopped in to get a bite to eat. I reviewed the menu and it was decent with average prices for Sushi. Also, for some reason, I've been on a sushi kick lately for some weird reason, so this hit the spot. I wanted the summertime roll and the Gyoza, but unfortunately, they were out of Goyoza. UGH. How do you run out? Also, I wasn't excited about their soup selection either, so I ended up just getting the roll itself. Fine. Overall, food was good, service was fine and I didn't feel rushed through my meal. Staff asked if I wanted more sushi but I passed even though I was still hungry from being so busy. This place rocks! We ordered several different kinds of sushi and everything was so delicious! They even brought it out on a little miniature bamboo boat with real orchids for decoration. Service is fast and friendly, restaurant is extremely clean and the waitt staff is very helpful if you don't know anything about sushi. I accidentally left my cell phone at the table and I cried all night stressed out but they were kind enough to hold onto my cell phone and I retrieved it the next morning. Not only will I go there again, but I will recommend this to anybody that loves sushi or that wants to try it. Hot Saki, veggie sushi rolls, miso soup, tempura & the list goes on....
