Notice the beauty of the highly polished silver chain and red coral pendant.

I've been a client of the wonderful business for over 20 years. Their excellent service and integrity is superb. Over the years I've purchase amazing and unique items that they offer in their shop. Recently, I decided that I wanted to collect a necklace that I'd left on consignment. My mother had given me this piece years ago and just never had an outfit to wear it with...well now I do. I'm heading to Honolulu to be with my 90 year old mother whole she goes through her surgery. I called Anne and asked if they still had it and may I collect it if so. She knew instantly what I was talking about and offered to have Joaquin clean it up. I was so amazed at how beautiful the piece looked and am more than grateful for their extra service. I highly recommend this reputable company.

In early 2018 Joyce Chapman began researching the nuances of a clock she picked-up in a yard sale and discovered that the flaring flowery metal style was deployed during the time in Europe known as the Rococo Era. All Rococo clocks of similar design were made of gold-or silver-plated bronze from the early 1700s to the mid 1800s. Due to her physical limitations, all Joyce could do was look at pictures and read about the Rococo Era on the internet. Her discoveries indicated the clock was of French origin. During late 2018, Joyce made me, the author of this piece, a partner in the Rococo clock project. My priority was to determine if the clock could be restored. This effort involved getting opinions by jewelers in the Coachella Valley about who is the best person to restore the clock? The unanimous verdict was Joaquim Pendleton who owns a shop in La Quinta, California appropriately named As Time Goes By. The clock was taken to his shop in November of 2018. Within 30 seconds of inspection Joaquim rendered a shocking determination that catapulted the research of the mystery clock into high gear and a whole new expansive direction. The reason why the clock is so heavy is because the metal of the case is very expensive STERLING SILVER and not the much lighter, shinier and cheaper plated bronze. Joaquim declared he could disassemble the clock, clean all metals and reassemble the clock in three to four weeks. But like his assessment of the metal, his predicted timetable was not worth very much. Joaquim agreed to allow me to take pictures during the entire process - see photo. In late January of 2019 Joaquim and his wife declared that the cleaning had been completed and the final phase of reassembly would take about a week. As weeks went by Joaquim and his wife stated that had other emergency jobs that needed to be completed so our Rococo clock restoration had to be put on hold. During the first week of March I emailed an article I wrote about the mystery clock that included a picture of Joaquim to Joaquim. I informed him that the article would be submitted to various clock news outlets and auction houses immediately after restoration had completed. The next day Joaquim called me and said that the clock was not sterling silver but silver-plated bronze. Joyce and I were devastated by what seemed to be a bait and switch tactic of Joaquim by telling us the clock was valuable sterling silver so to entice us to have him restore the clock. We would have never had the clock restored had we known the metal was worthless silver plated bronze. Further investigation at that time uncovered the fact that there was a simple test that could have been performed to determine if the metal was pure or plated silver on the day we brought the clock into As Time Goes By. On March 19, 2019 I was in As Time Goes By and paid $695.00 for the full restoration of the Rococo clock with my credit card that had no problems clearing. I then in a very low voice and with no emotion asked Joaquim if this was a case of bait and switch? His head fell towards his chest as his shoulders slumped for a few seconds. He then raised up and shouted at me the entire remaining time I was in his shop. I never raised my voice in response. I never asked for a refund but I very calmly asked him why he did not perform the simple metal test when we first brought the clock to his store? He shouted back "because you did not ask to do the test!" So, Joaquim believes I was responsible for asking him to do a test that at the time I knew nothing about - Joaquim knew that I was not aware of the test. He yelled as his wife to give me a full refund check. When his wife gave me the check he then screamed "Now get out of my store." But according to Joaquim, he told others that he had to kick me out of his store... and that ridiculous false accusation is like his bogus assessment of the clock metal, his absurd restoration timetable and deceptively waiting until the very last moment when his assessment would be exposed as a fraud to communicate that the metal was silver plated bronze rather than sterling silver. Since Joaquim's shouting spree Joequim's wife has made harassing and threatening phone calls and letters to 81-year old Joyce to pay a bill that was already paid and refunded. How bizarre can one get. Things do get more bizarre. Joyce made a totally separate agreement from the clock restoration that involved her paying for display space in the As Time Goes By. The agreement stated As Time Goes By would collect the monies from the customers who paid for items put into the display case and then pay Joyce. Joaquim and his wife are refusing to transmit her earned monies from the sales of her items until she pays for the clock restoration that has been paid for and refunded. Bottom line - you might find something of interest in As Time Goes By to purchase but avoid any kind of service or display case agreements - not worth the grief, wasted time and lost monies.

I have an old wall clock, about 90 years old. Coca Cola clock that my great grandfather was given for his years working at Coke. Is this something you would be interested in repairing for me?

If ii plugs in the wall an electric clock, I cannot get new motors. However if it is a windup, I can repair it no problem. Bring it in for an estimate . Thanks for inquiring, Joaquin

I thought if it could be repaired that would be great, but wasn't expecting such a great service from Ann and Joaquin.

I took a bracelet in that I've owned for 25 years to have the safety chain and the connecting rings repaired and replaced. Since that repair, the chain has continually gotten tangled and twisted into the bracelet -- something that never had happened prior to the repair. I took the bracelet back twice, and although he provided courtesy repairs, the issue continued and the chain kept tangling and breaking. To me, that seemed to show that the original repair had created the problem and he (Ralph-the owner) acknowledged that. What made this situation even more upsetting was the interaction during my last visit. When I calmly explained that I simply wanted the bracelet restored to how it originally was, I was met with hostility. Ralph became verbally aggressive, accused me of calling him a thief and blaming the tangled chain on wear and tear. He kept repeating that he did not replace the chain, despite the fact I took it in because the original chain had broken in half. I reiterated that the problem did not exist prior to his repairs. After years of bringing my jewelry here, this level of treatment was completely unexpected and unacceptable. In looking back through other reviews, I also noticed similar comments from previous customers describing comparable experiences. It was disappointing to realize that I was not the only one who encountered this type of behavior. I never asked for anything beyond having my bracelet returned to its original condition--I never had the chain tangling issue before the repair. I asked for an explanation as to what the $304.50 charge I paid him was for, and Ralph stated it was to replace the rings that held the chain and not the chain itself. Although once he pulled up his customer notes and read them to me, the notes clearly stated it was to replace both the chain and the rings it attaches to. Additionally, I have attached photos of their original estimate to repair and clean ($39.95 & $49.95, respectively) and somehow it became over $300. Needless to say, I left the store with my broken bracelet and an owner who was not interested in correcting a problem he created. Based on my experience, I can no longer recommend this jeweler.

From my initial purchase to subsequent purchases, Ralph has always been professional and helpful…read more I'm happy to give my business to a local business where I know it's appreciated.
