I was wondering how Artown would pull off an event this year without the "Main Stage" of Wingfield Park to anchor the city wide events. They have pulled it off this year by incorporating many of sculptures and pieces that are 10/10 Yelp and Instagram ready. Artown is one of the highlights of the year. Year after year after year! From beautiful sculpture on display, to live performances of music and theatre, the event encompasses all sorts of incredibly rich art experiences that make the city come alive! Unfortunately much of that involved the community getting together, so during this pandemic, they really had to pivot hard. What they came up with was nothing short of amazing, and the entire committee should receive incredible praise. Immersive virtual programming and community art creation still had the city morale on high in a way only art can do. We got to be part of the We Are Heartown project. We painted big wooden hearts and then they got hung around town. It was really cool to see them on display. Thanks for all your hard work Artown and all you do to enrich the community! read more

This is one of the best things about living in Reno. We have been participating in this month long event for the last few years. This year, we are trying to see as much as possible, but there is just too much! Too many wonderful events but one must choose and prioritize. Plays running concurrently at our three fabulous Community Theaters, Pop-Opera, Improv, Storytelling, Reno Phil Pops Concert, all are occurring on one night! And the list goes on and on and on from 8 in the morning until 10:30 at night. Oh where can I get one of those "Time Twisting" things that Hermione used? The amazing thing is many of the events are free! Even the ticketed events are reasonable and the venues are spectacular; Winfield park, Bartley Ranch and the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater, local art galleries, coffeeshops, businesses, and UNR. Just saw a wonderful FREE concert last night at Wingfield Park for the World Music Series. It was a double header with Kashe Kale and his band and the Ragamala Dance Company featuring music, song and dance from India. Amazing! I got to experience something that I may not have been aware of if it had not been here in Reno. Did I mention this was FREE??? Thank-You to all of the community sponsors and the small but dedicated staff at Artown for making all of this possible for our community. Month long art event in Reno. All art- visual,music and hands on. Many of the events are FREE !! Some ask for a small donation. What ever you like in the way of art is is represented this month. At the first of the month I had a chance to meet and talk to Franz Szony the artist who designed the Artown poster. And see his collection of Wise Witches- great work. Several occasions during the month I have enjoyed the music of Milton Merlos while dinning al fresco at Wild River Grille. Movie in the park on Friday nights are always great- come early to get a spot, Wingfield Park is constantly busy with events all day long and into the night. And there's just something cool about watching movies under the stars. Events are located all over town. My favorite every year is Art Paws. Sheela gets to spend a couple of hours at McKinley park checking out the other dogs and picking up treats from the vendors. Bartley Ranch is an outdoor amphitheater in a quiet neighborhood that seats about a 1000 people. It hosted a free concert of AGT star Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. Great venue and incredible talent. The Atlantis hosted the fashion show. Eleven designers sent their newest creations down quite the long runway for all to check out. Naima Mora, winner America's Top Model performed during the show and hosted the after party. Midtown Art Walk- get you art culture on by wandering around on a Thursday evening in Midtown checking out local artists and their crafts. I dare say there must have been almost 100 artists that you could personally talk to and buy art from. Painters, jewelry makers and musicians. What a great month to experience so much for free or at a very low cost in Reno. So much variety. Mark you calendar for next year. read more

I love the summer season in Reno and I especially love July, when the city participates in Artown. Attended the kick off at Wingfield Park and saw one of my favorite bands, Los Lobos. Already have attend the Sands Blues Pool Party and last night the Reno Phil at Wingfield Park. This town comes alive in July! There is something to do every day in July!. I didn't make it to the kick off of Artown, but came tonight to the Sand Regency to listen to Jon Stephen. Wow! What an amazingly talented Brazilian Jazz Guitarist. The music was so wonderful that it took me away to a different place. So excited for his new CD to be released soon. The music was definitely a 5! The venue, I would give a 2, this musician was definitely too talented to be playing at the poolside of the Sands Regency. He definitely needed to be either at the Wingfield amphitheater or a real music hall. I can't complain though, because there wasn't an entrance fee; however, I would definitely pay to hear him play in a proper acoustical setting without the background noise of the pool splashing. Still a great event and thank you for giving the community a wonderful evening. read more

What's not to love? This is one of the defining summer events for the city of Reno - a month long celebration of arts, music, dance, theater - you name it, and you've got it. I love the international flavor of the events too - from African to Russian to Jamaican, the influences are fun to experience at the different cultural events. Every year the artists and artisans can change, so if you like someone, see them or else risk missing out. So many events are free or a minimal cost; a few may ask for donations to help defray costs. Month long art event! Every day there's at least 4 different art related events. I have only done the thing one can do with their children but the options are endless. Free performances, free concerts, galleries, art while just walking around downtown. It is an incredible way to introduce your family to different art mediums, and something I enjoy with my family yearly. Highly suggest going to as many events as you can! read more

Attended my first artown event for this year and gotta day it was very disappointing. False advertising I have to say. Came to the whiskey tasting at Ceol Irish bar tonight and it was only for the first 40 people arriving between 400pm and 430. This event was set to to begin at 5pm until 6pm with no information on the cap of people nor needing to arrive early in the pamphlet or on artown online. The band also left early. Super disappointing. read more

We love Friday night's Rollin' on the River! The musical acts are always great and varied. Everyone in the park is in a good mood and there is lots of socializing. There are always good vendors supplying food and drink, not to mention you can bring your picnic dinner. They do check coolers for glass and alcohol, but let's be real everyone is bringing their own cocktails. You do need to go early by 4:30 if you are looking for a shady spot. There are a few dogs even though they are not allowed, and honestly the poor dogs would rather be at home. The are plenty of clean port-a-potties, but you can always go across the bridge to Sierra Tap House for a real bathroom. If you want to make it a late night, stay for the movie in the park. A bonus there is free popcorn and swag from the businesses sponsoring the movie. The last movie of July is always a secret and it is a movie that will not show in our area at theaters. I never actually checked into Artown but I've been taking advantage of Artown for the past 5 years. Art in all its forms -- visual, audio, performance -- can be found all over Reno for the month of July! Plus there are tons of workshops for you to create your own masterpiece. Almost every night on the Riverwalk there was opportunities to -- see a movie, listen to live music, purchase art from local artists, be wowed by fire and light performances, etc. Even a few of the casinos got involved this year -- Circus Circus did their annual mural competition and Atlantis clear their parking lot to host a day of Chalk Art In The Parking lot. My goal for 2016 was to hit one Artown event every day/night of July. I failed miserably but there alway 2017! read more

Artown music used to be good with tribute bands like Gerald Wilkins and Parrot Heads, or Wailing Souls. However picked music for Wingfield Park this year has done a poor job...Most of the free event music is not entertaining. Friday's "Spike Maguire's" concert at Wingfield Park was a new low...One guy playing a guitar is not a band, and since his voice was lousy made it worse. Then he elected to sing a song he wrote about "Police Brutality"...very innapproriate considering 10+ police officers have been slain in cold blood over issues they had nothing to do with. Artown should not have singers with political agendas. Bad music, bad choices... Artown needs to do better in the future. read more

Got a chance to see Shrek two different times. The production was great. You could tell how much work went to the costumes and sets. The cast did a wonderful job. Both times I went there was problems with the sound. Not sure if the ques were missed or mic problems, it did distract from the production. With as much work that went into this I was hoping at the last performance the sound issues would had been resolved. Over all a wonderful play, needs better sound equipment. read more

We decided to go to the Reno pops concert at Bartley Ranch All the info indicates it was free We arrive at5PM and received our bands By the time we got in we discovered that a substantial number of seat were reserved for members of the Pops Posse who had PAID to get the reserved seats .Between that and people throwing stuff on other empty seats there were none available In addition there was no disabled parking left available We finally went home We would have gladly paid for seats at the event We atteneded Pops on the River and for years sat in the back for the senior rate of $5/per person We had not attended for a couple of years The rate had jumped to $20 with no senior discount So far this is no longer the Artown event of past year No longer a FREE fun event read more
