Want to try to strategize with your doctor about pain management, chronic illness planning, etc? Nope! They're not interested. What they are interested in, however, is getting you in and out and charging you their 70eur visit fee. They prescribe you medication that makes you vomit until you're coughing up blood? You can call and tell them "hey - this med isn't working, let's (again) try this other one that's worked in the past for me", but they're going to tell you to come back in for another 70eur just to call in a new prescription for you. So: They have no interest in discussing options with you. They will take your money and send you on your way, without listening to what you have to say. They will even deny you medication that you have had a standing prescription for for years to manage chronic pain for absurd reasons. When the medication that they prescribe makes you sick, but there is a known different medication that will easily work better, they won't just acknowledge that it was a good effort that didn't work out and rectify it with a proven remedy. They will force you to shell out another fee just to get written a prescription. This is even worse than the United States private health sector. **As an aside, and most importantly: My doctor took TWO WEEKS to return my calls/emails after I left messages every day. Even with chronic and debilitating back and musculoskeletal pain, he refused to prescribe my standing medication from the US when he finally got back to me two days before I leave for a 2 month trip outside of Finland. Now I have to wait until I arrive in the US, with no insurance there, to get legitimate and ethical medical treatment. This both disgusts and pains me. Literally. PAINS me. Just wait for the public health system - it actually works better.

Before I saw Dr. Fan, what started as a cough in in the middle of August never healed and I got something else which caused awful congestion. The Europe trip I had planned in Feburary came up, and I went to my American Doctors in San Francisco, loaded up with steroids, antihistamine, antibiotics and inhalers, because they couldn't figure out why I was sick. I flew into Europe September 28th, and by then I had been congested for two weeks. By the time I saw Dr. Fan on Oct 4th, in Helsinki, I had gone through 3 flights where my ears wouldn't pop and equalize for hours or days after the flight. I was blowing away a bag of tissues a day, and I was deaf in one ear or the other most of the time. She listened to my case, listened to my pulse, pricked me with acupuncture needles--I had done acupuncture before and for comparison, I could feel these ones being very sensitive and on point. Then she prescribed me herbs to take 3 times a day for 3 days. My congestion was significantly improved right after the session and I could hear for the next several hours. She noted that I was not prepared for the Helsinki weather not dressing warmly for the cold was worsening my case. She offered to lend me some of her clothes since my hotel was very nearby and dropped it off on her day off at my hotel! (Holy! that's something only family would do!) Over the next two days I felt very steady improvement with the herbs, heeding her advice not to drink beer or generally avoiding alcohol, and only drink warm and hot water instead of cold. I returned for one last acupuncture session on Friday. After my last session, I flew to Spain in the afternoon, and for the first time my ears popped when we took off and popped again after landing. I was not in excruciating pain during or after the flight. I flew one more time from Barcelona to Madrid on Monday, and no problem at all. I haven't blew my nose even once today. Dr. Fan did not over promise, she told me that she's addressing the congestion, it should help with the cough and I should feel better after treatment and that's exactly what happened. Since the congestion disappeared, I'm not coughing and wheezing anymore either. I feel healthier today than I've felt since August. I felt very lucky to have met Dr. Fan, and received the most effective and warmly human and personal care I can possibly imagine. Thank you Dr. Fan! You are absolutely amazing and I can't thank you enough!
