Want to try to strategize with your doctor about pain management, chronic illness planning, etc? Nope! They're not interested. What they are interested in, however, is getting you in and out and charging you their 70eur visit fee. They prescribe you medication that makes you vomit until you're coughing up blood? You can call and tell them "hey - this med isn't working, let's (again) try this other one that's worked in the past for me", but they're going to tell you to come back in for another 70eur just to call in a new prescription for you. So: They have no interest in discussing options with you. They will take your money and send you on your way, without listening to what you have to say. They will even deny you medication that you have had a standing prescription for for years to manage chronic pain for absurd reasons. When the medication that they prescribe makes you sick, but there is a known different medication that will easily work better, they won't just acknowledge that it was a good effort that didn't work out and rectify it with a proven remedy. They will force you to shell out another fee just to get written a prescription. This is even worse than the United States private health sector. **As an aside, and most importantly: My doctor took TWO WEEKS to return my calls/emails after I left messages every day. Even with chronic and debilitating back and musculoskeletal pain, he refused to prescribe my standing medication from the US when he finally got back to me two days before I leave for a 2 month trip outside of Finland. Now I have to wait until I arrive in the US, with no insurance there, to get legitimate and ethical medical treatment. This both disgusts and pains me. Literally. PAINS me. Just wait for the public health system - it actually works better.

Naistenklinikka's maternity ward and accompanying medical professionals are among the best I've…read moreencountered anywhere: they beat out Kaiser and UCSF in San Francisco any day. They are better than the doctors I have seen at Katiloopisto, too. Having to go there for an urgent matter, I was treated with such kindness, warmth, respect, professionalism, and care that I am incredibly happy we'll be having our baby there later this year. Starting with an urgent phone call to them, I was spoken to calmly and respectfully, I was met by medical staff who knew who I was and were expecting my arrival. I was treated professionally, kindly, and with warmth by outstanding midwives and student midwives who were friendly and put me at ease immediately. They gently but confidently got me all hooked up to the gadgets that I needed to be hooked up to, assured me that they'd be right there the whole time, and did not "forget" about me while I lay in a hospital bed awaiting test results. The doctor was very, very thorough: even though my tests came back ok, he ordered further testing just to be safe. The doctor I saw was perhaps one of the best doctors I've had the pleasure of being seen by ever. Anywhere. Exuding calm confidence and clearly skilled and sure of what he was doing, I never once doubted his expertise or assessment of my situation. With a great sense of humor (rare here) and a very supportive demeanor, I left knowing that I was ok, our baby was ok, and that I could call any time for anything at all and not feel like I'm putting anyone out. When coming from another country, quickly entering a foreign system of care can be intimidating, especially when very different cultural and social norms exist. Naistenklinikka was outstanding: very modern, clean, and still comfortable with what I would call some of the best and most caring medical staff I've encountered at each and every step of the process. Again: from initial phone call to discharge, I was so completely blown away by the treatment I received. I am very happy we'll be welcoming our new roommate into the world here. Lucky us.

I have endometriosis I have been I excruciating pains for the last 3.5 months now…read more I have been to hospital here in Finland and also in Estonia for 7 times all together in that 3.5 months because the pain gets so bad I pass out ect, had a referral made by my primary care doctor at tervesasema AND THEY JUST CANCELLED IT?? (not the first time they have just cancelled my appointment, usually I get no explanation even) saying that they don't see a need for me to go there as it's not so urgent.. sooo do I have to wait until I'm unable to live with it and I get told once again that Hysterectomy is my only option if I can't live with it? I'm not even 30 years old yet we are planning to have a kid but I keep getting dismissed by the one place where I could get checked if it's even possible with my conditio. How can medical professionals be so f*cking ignorant it's someones life we are talking about here.
