They bring a passion with them to the expertise they offer you. That's what it's like to step into Ms Audrey's Emporium. The entrance is filled with art projects that invite you to explore within yourself- What do you wish to create? What crafting skill have you been meaning to pick up or grow? What part of you haven't you had a chance to express yet? And then Ms Audrey will ask you what you're interested in making, so she can help you bring it from idea to life! My artistic, seven-year-old daughter and I came to Louisville for spring break and enjoyed spending more than two days with Ms Audrey. We had stopped at the Speed Art Museum on our way into the city. Pro tip: The speed is free on Sundays. My daughter was inspired by some community artwork with mixed media on canvas. We showed a picture of the inspiration to Ms Audrey. She had the perfect materials and know-how to help us create our own masterpiece, inspired by the art we saw at the museum. My daughter did not want to do anything else in the city besides make art with Ms Audrey- we even skipped the children's museum. We learned different techniques for using the materials and I'll definitely be incorporating them as we continue to create at home. Ms Audrey helps you not only bring beauty into the world, but she makes learning a new craft accessible step by step. Her process helps you create while expanding your crafting skills along the way. She offers such a unique experience. As someone who continually strives to bring analog experiences to the younger generations, I fully approve and value the service she brings to the community. Her prices are absolutely affordable for the value and materials she has to offer. If you're considering starting a crafting hobby or working on a specific craft project, go see Ms Audrey.

I made some concrete coasters from scratch while I sipped an espresso martini. The service is prompt, and the specialists are also really kind and knowledgeable. The crafts range from simple to complex, and every craft is very independent! Avoid if you're not into loud noises as the work space is a little small and others and their crafts will be making lots of noise! (Especially the hammer for the leather works!) I've never had a drink here I didn't love, but the espresso martini especially is one of my favorites in the city. Really mellow flavor and very foamy. The Craftery is perfect for bachelorette parties, birthdays, and date nights. Next time skip the fancy dinner and make some concrete coasters instead! Then grab some takeout and enjoy your craft!

Things don't turn out the way my brain envisioned them and I find myself more frustrated than inspired. The shop offers various items to craft and once purchasing the project, the supplies are provided. Long tables fill the space. Drinks and cocktails are available for purchase and you can bring in food or order from nearby restaurants. My recent visit they hosted drag bingo during Pride month. The staff were amazing and kept the drink line reasonable. I also loved their generosity in donating two visits to the bingo winners.

The honest truth is that this is a gorgeous location but there is absolutely nothing to do here unless you are religious and wish to spend time engaging in prayer and contemplation. If that isn't your thing, stopping here really isn't worth your time. You can't actually explore the church other than sit in the visitor's gallery, and the majority of the grounds where the monks actually reside are understandably off limits. One of the reasons most people do travel here is to visit the grave of Thomas Merton. It isn't readily open to the general public - instead you have to pass through the retreat door (which is clearly marked "not open to day guests") and ask the Monk on the other side if you may see the grave. That is what we did - and he was kind enough to oblige. It is a wonderful experience from that perspective. There is also a small visitor's center and gift shop that you can visit and buy various Catholic mementos - books written by Merton - and fudge made by the monks themselves. So again, I've reviewed this from a pure tourist perspective - if that is what you are, don't waste your time. If instead you are on a pilgrimage or some other sort of personal journey, then this is definitely worth the 5 star reviews others have given.
