Atelier Gallery is a lovely, two story gallery right on King Street. Set in the old style house…read morethat Charleston is known and famous for, this gallery is well lit with wooden floors and paintings on every wall. The gallery is open late and has several couches upstairs where you can sit and observe some of the fabulous pieces. Paintings only through the large gallery house, most realist although some impressionistic and geometric as well. It's an art gallery located directly on King Street, you're guaranteed to have high prices, so don't expect anything less. But overall, beautiful work; the woman working the gallery greeted us when we entered but didn't interact with us beyond that. No purchases this time around, but I'd definitely return to look again.

I visited many galleries and the experience as each was uniformly positive; that is, until I stepped into this Atelier Gallery. The beautiful paintings in the window caught my eye but from the moment I walked in and was greeted by the condescending man behind the desk, I knew this was going to be different. It was a very chilly atmosphere with no greeting. Another thing I noticed was that, unlike almost every other gallery (including some much more expensive galleries), there were no prices posted so you had to ask about everything. I heard him interacting rudely with another patron when that man was asking about prices which turned me off. I zeroed in on a painting and began asking a few questions, and was thinking out loud with my mom and sister as to where I might place the painting in my apartment, when the man behind the desk said in a very mocking tone: "you must not have much wall space, because that painting could go anwhere." I was so taken aback and horrified that I gave a curt retort and then promptly left the gallery. This was just such an awful experience that I would implore people to patronize other galleries, like I did, such as Meyer Vogl, Ellis-Nicholson and Horton Hayes. There is simply too much gorgeous art to buy from someone like this rather than from owners who truly seem to love art and will be courteous and helpful.
