There are other smaller theaters here I still need to check out, the Rose Theater and the Rosebud. I love the kind theater staff and popcorn seller. Beer is also available. The popcorn is especially delicious. You can flavor it yourself with a selection of creative savory spices.

YUM! And the prices are reasonable. No gouging here. The concessions are friendly and homey. You can get a cup of ice and they don't charge you for the cup! The usual candy selection, plus some exotic candies and sometimes even baked goodies. The entire lobby walls are covered in vintage movie posters. Ticket prices are ridiculously low! Most movies are only $12 for adults. If you're a member (membership begins at $100/year,) you can get $2 off the ticket price, plus earn points for other freebies and discounts. The whole theater is styled like the vintage theaters from the golden age of cinema. Velvet seats. Even hand-printed chalkboard marquees over the theater entrances. Old fashioned settees in the room off the lobby, and a vintage box office window. One of the theaters features hand-painted murals on the walls. One has been totally redecorated with sofa seating and little tea tables. Personal touch: Most movies begin with a personal description of the film to be shown, narrated by one of the theater's friendly staff. They might also include trivia or other items of interest about the director or the making of the film. There are no annoying commercials. Just a slideshow while you're waiting, of advertisements from local businesses. Then just a few previews and your movie starts. The sound quality is great and the theaters are small, so you always get a good seat. The theater is owned and run by local Port Townsend residents, who are often there, and will always try to make time for a question or a chat or even just a quick hello between rushing off to check the projector or close the heavy red velvet drapes before the film starts or fill a bag of popcorn. They run a selection of the latest box office hits, classic films, and even ballets and operas. This is especially special since we are so far away from being able to visit such amazing venues as the Met in person. If you're ever in Port Townsend, you MUST make time for a movie visit at the Rose. My friend and I walked around to enjoy the flowers and take a walk to the beach. I was not fit for the trek down to the beach though, so my friend went and reported it's really beautiful. There were swallows flying at a crazy fast speed and zooming around us. Felt like Snow White. There are bathrooms here that are the standard expected for a park, but the one I was in didn't have a light at all so I'd avoid it after dark.

Sighhhhhhh...the summer was short, my family was heading home, and it never happened. But.... Had I lived in Port Townsend, WA as a child, it could have. Indeed, it would have. I'd be flying the friendly skies of PT now, even as we speak. But, of course, I might not have time to do this review... www.ptaeromuseum.com I visited the Port Townsend Aero Museum three days days ago. T'was a bright spring day and I was loathe to go inside knowing that the three day forecast was for snow, snow, snow. Chipper Yelper that I am, I went inside the museum anyhoo, leaving the balmy outdoor weather to a small (teenaged) work crew landscaping the front of the building. If the kids were hard at work making the place beautiful for visitors, who was I not to reward their efforts? A small admission fee got me inside the new building. Airplane models hung from the rafters, beautifully restored planes had "landed" strategically about the floors. Placards described each plane and its role in history. Several planes (as noted on the placards) were currently in use as training craft for the young pilots who learn to fly at the museum. My entrance fee (donations from other visitors) is what keeps the fly lessons and the museum going. So I lingered for an hour or so, looking at airplane models, antique cars and some wonderful old flight helmets and gauges. I walked the catwalk around the inside of the tall building, looked at aviation paintings, watched other visitors as they entered the spacious hangar. DIdn't even notice that I was inside on a balmy day. I do have a suggestion or two for future museum exhibits: I'd have liked to have seen a motor, perhaps with its schematic nearby. I would have enjoyed brief "instructions" on the aerodyamics of flight. A checklist of preparations for lift-off and landing would have been fun to look at. (I am told that these are readily available through airplane manufacturers...so a generic list shouldn't be hard for the museum to find. ) There once was a wonderful old hand-lettered sign visible as you exited Jefferson International Airport, which is where the museum is located. It said "Don't forget to close your flight book." Perhaps an actual flight book would make interesting reading. Certainly the visitors' comment book does reflect the numbers of geographically distant folks who tour the museum but no space is included in it for visitors comments. This would be nice. But heck. Who am I to tinker with the success of this endeavor? This is a cool museum. Kids involved in its programs really *do* get the flight bug and occasionally do solo before they get their Washington State driver's license. And as for me? Well, I had a good time. Hopped into my ancient Saturn which was parked in the parking lot. Waved at the kids working on the landscaping. Scanned my gas gauge, speedometer and clock...and said to myself as I exited into the sunny Port Townsend afternoon... What if?? The road not taken. Or rather the runway not taken. Yet.

This haunt is not just to be seen, but to truly be experienced. The each scene was a wonderful choice for a carnival theme and well set with a plethora of detail. The sound track was exceptional having the most excellent blend of song & effects for each vignette without being overbearing or bleeding into the next room. (a very difficult task!) The actors timing was just right with their deliberately sinister movements being completely intimidating. The suspension bridge & bouncy floors caught me off guard and the vortex tunnel left me dizzy. I was totally creeped out by the doll room, found myself singing Happy Birthday to Sven and overheard a patron say the snake charmer was "hot". Be sure to find the humongous jumping spider. Port Townsend might be a bit of a trek for most, but well worth the road trip to experience this unique dark attraction.

Paid parking is available just outside the building. Public bathrooms are down the street near a coffee shop. They had two boats in the harbor, we were on the smaller one: Redhead. The interior has about 12 booths that fit four people each with a wrap-around deck on the outside. The boat was nice and comfortable with table service. They have coffee and hot chocolate, and food including a blueberry buckle. We saw one Gray Whale, one pod of Orcas with a young one, and one pair of Orcas. We also saw Harbor Porpoise, Harbor Seal, Sea Otter, Bald Eagles, and lots of birds. It felt like most of the time we were driving really fast to get to the whales and then to Friday Harbor, then back. Most of the time is just moving quickly on the water. Though the experience was great, I probably wouldn't go on this trip again. We didn't see many whales. It was a very long day of just going quickly through the area. If I went again it would be at a different time of year and only for the half-day tour.

It was my first time seeing whales, and we got to see Orcas, Gray whales, and Humpbacks all in a single trip!! Every staff member I met was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and kind.
