If I am not mistaken the shop occupies the space once occupied by wine merchant La Vigneronne. It is a short walk from South Kensington tube on the slightly charmless Old Brompton Road. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and happy to chat about wine. I had the pleasure of trying some interesting Canadian (!) wine from the Niagara Falls region that they were sampling. It was perhaps not the greatest wine I had but always nice to try. I also highlights the depth of the selection they carry. The South African wines are numerous and a lot that one cannot find in other places so good to explore new areas of South Africa. There is also a very good selection of French wines and interesting stuff from Portugal and Spain. The prices are decent but the 'cheaper' bottles do in general seem to be worse value then when looking at £15 and higher. A nice place but not worth a trip in itself unless you are on the look out for South African wines,

However, I do find it a convenient gift when I need something for a celebration or when going round to dinner at a friend's place. Majestic calls itself a wine warehouse and that description does dampen down your expectation of its appearance - it is housed in one of the most unusual/ugliest buildings I've seen. Despite being on the main Wimbledon Broadway, it does have some parking just in front of the shop. Once inside, you'll find huge stacks of wines from old and new wine countries. For a non drinker like me, there are helpful labels which tell you about he character of the various wines on offer. You do have to buy in bulk - 6 or 12 bottles being the minimum. I've had no complaints from friends who've received bottles I've purchased here, so I assume their selection is sound. A bit disappointed that despite me trying to buy an expensive bottle from them, they still insisted on the minimum bottles rule. That did lose them my custom on that occasion.

There are many wines as well, primarily from the top world producers: Australia, France, South Africa and Chile. Majestic offers a handy delivery service to your home address as well, perfect for larger events. Majestic may not be suitable for the casual drinker or last minute party host, as prices can be quite high compared to the local supermarkets. San Miguel beer costs nearly £7 more per case at Majestic than it does at the local Morrisons, so if you're an impulse buyer, rather take a minute to think about it. Remember though: if it's pure variety and a free delivery you're after, Majestic is the place to call.

Not the place to visit if you're after a bottle of cheap plonk for a budget night in, instead it beckons when you want a special occasion wine for yourself, to complement a memorable meal, or to offer as a gift. The name theme continues with many of the wines; film aficionados are sure to be tempted by Francis Ford Coppola's 'Director's Cut' Chardonnay at £14.65 or his Pinot Noir at £17.75. If you're a fan of full bodied Aussie beauties opt for the intriguingly titled 'Cockfighter's Ghost' at £15.50, a Tasmanian Pinot Noir. A townie with countryside cravings might weaken at the sight of 'Ten Minutes by Tractor' (another Pinot Noir from Oz). When you are recovering from the night before, and still have a healthy wallet, your tipple of choice could be 'Dead Arm' Shiraz (Aussie again) at £27.25. For the dedicated oenophile, or enthusiastic imbiber, there's an excellent choice of wine-related accessories to choose from encompassing bottle openers, wine savers, glasses, silver champagne buckets and exquisite swarovski butterfly stoppers. I'm no expert on wine - at all - so what I do when I come in here is ask the very nice French man behind the desk what he thinks. I tell him about what I'm going to eat with it or who it's for or what it's for and he makes a suggestion and tells me about the wine. I then tell repeat what he says to whoever I drink the wine with. The selection is really good though and ranges from mid range £6 or so to much, much more serious vintages.
