My husband was dying to learn how to salsa (seriously), so I surprised him with a dance lesson for his birthday. Our instructor, Sofia, was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The lesson lasted for 30 minutes and in that time we learned four basic steps. Although the first lesson is free, they pressure you to purchase a program. Honestly, I would have rather paid for the lesson than feel that uncomfortable. Besides all that, the space is great and if you have the time and money (and baby sitters!), then this is the place for you. read more

My fiance (now husband) and I were interested in dance lessons for our wedding - we went in for our first complimentary lesson, and to be honest, I wouldn't really call it a lesson. It's more of a get-to-know-you session. Regardless, we signed up for a 10 class package - not cheap, but nothing is these days. And it was really important for both of us to feel comfortable dancing together before our wedding. Melissandra was our instructor, and we both really liked her energy. She and Joey, the manager, both seemed to genuinely care if we were happy with our lessons and the routine that we were working on. By the time we had completed our lessons, we knew most of the staff, and it was like seeing friends each time we went in. Anyway, fast forward to wedding day, and our first dance was a huge hit with our guests! We both felt nervous, even though we had practiced it countless times. We did a quick run through during cocktail hour while our guests were still outside, and as soon as it was over, we high fived and danced the night away with our guests...exactly as it should have been! My only complaint would be that we often felt a little pressured by the front desk - if we couldn't schedule our next lesson right away, we got asked on multiple occasions "why not?" and "well, can you move that?"...honestly that was the biggest turn off. My husband's work schedule is super unpredictable, and he just felt very defensive when that happened - I think I was sensitive to it because he was already doing something that I know he wasn't a huge fan of. We've been offered the opportunity to return, and I think we would both like to at some point in the future. But right now, we are on the post-wedding budget, which will not allow for expensive dance lessons. I have had a fantastic experience learning to dance at Arthur Murray. I have gained poise, confidence, and skill in all the basic dances and then some. The teachers are so easy to learn from, and make each lesson a fun experience. I have really enjoyed the social atmosphere as well, the other students are low-key, encouraging, and enthusiastic. I have attended group lessons, parties, many private lessons, district showcase events and participated in a group formation routine. Each of these elements play a different part in my developing skill as a dancer, and each has been fun, challenging, and fulfilling to me. I was so excited to return to dancing, had a wonderful first experience with the young man whom did such a wonderful job with the Free Dance Lesson. As the 1 hr, lesson was consumed, The Front office girls Simone and Brittney, were very superficial. They were so nice at first, kind. As we discussed their outrageous prices. I decided on my 1 hr drive home. That I could not spend close to $600 a month for a passion of mine. Since I do know how to dance, just wanted to have something to enjoy while Learning a few new techniques. I felt in my core, that if you really have a passion for something as so, should not make you feel like your being forced to purchase. I right away let Simone know that I could not live with myself if I knew I spent that kind of money, hence we were only in Feb., my inner intuition told me that there was no way I should do that. For one, it's more than my car payment., #2 I could be giving that money to my elderly parents whom really need it, & # 3..... Coronavirus, now they want to teach you virtually.... besides the point.... back to my story.... I texted Simone to let her know I did not feel comfortable and wanted to decline, and would like my refund back of a whole $50.00. May seem like nothing for some, but I felt I have every right to have my refund back, because it was just to hold "my Spot" Simone said. So I feel that they have been ignoring me and my emails, texts. I received an email from the Owner Chris. Just first response in late April to this situation since Feb., he said his staff is not working. In May of this year, I called to sign my fiance (now husband) Mike and myself up for our free first lesson. My husband was not happy that I signed us up and grunted "like we have time for this", but with lessons until 9:15 PM, we were able to fit it into our schedule even with our ridiculous Bay Area commutes. We showed up to our first free lesson with Ron and were doing multiple types of dances by the end of those 45 min. With our wedding a little over a month, we signed up for the 5 lesson wedding package. The package is not cheap, but Arthur Murray is a really solid dance studio so we decided to give it a chance. On our first lesson, we gave Ron our wedding song and by our second lesson, he had fully choreographed a first dance rumba routine for us. When we completed our wedding dance package, we signed on to monthly 10-class packages to continue our lessons before and after our wedding. We were living in Dublin, CA at the time, but got married outside my hometown of Portland, OR so we did not have a chance to practice in our wedding shoes until 2 nights before our wedding. We ran through our routine in my parents' front yard where I used to play as a kid, and that is a wonderful memory I have no pictures of, but that which I hope never to forget. On our wedding day, we were excited to show off our moves! Only a handful of friends and my mom knew we had taken lessons. Mike's parents had no clue and his mom was blown away. I was so excited that our first dance was a huge hit and was more than just swaying. I have been dancing my whole life and I really did not want a middle school dance first dance. Mike thoroughly enjoyed our wedding dance lessons and we continued dance lessons until we moved to Connecticut in early October of this year. Over the course of our 5 months at Arthur Murray, we received lessons with Ron and Melisandra. Both are outstanding. Ron and Melisandra choreographed a second demo dance for us and Melisandra choreographed a wonderful Merengue/Salsa/Bachata demo that we were able to perform on our final day at Arthur Murray. In addition to ballroom and latin style dancing, the instructors of Arthur Murray sometimes put together different formations that you can sign up for as well. These can be different styles of dancing. I was part of a hip hop formation lead by Cimone September-October and it was also a lot of fun. Since we have moved to Connecticut, we have not gotten back into dancing and we both miss it very much. We are hoping to see if we can fit it back in once our lives have settled down and we have settled into some sort of routine. A hesitation prospective students may have about Arthur Murray is the cost. It is certainly a very expensive dance studio, but it is worth every penny. As mentioned above, I have been dancing most of my life, but this was the first professional dance studio I had attended. You do not learn one or even two styles of dance. They have a very extensive repertoire of ballroom and latin dance styles and you will learn them all. When building your program, you can indicate which styles you are most interested in learning as well as how proficient you would like to be (for Mike, he wanted to learn to be able to identify the dance style for every song and for me, I wanted to look like a pro on Dancing with the Stars... one was more reasonable than the other). When we walked into Arthur Murray in May, Mike had never really danced before and I knew some waltz, swing, and some hip hop as well as having grown up doing loads Scandinavian folk dancing. When we left on October 13, 2017, we had learned at least the basics for waltz, rumba, tango, foxtrot, east coast swing, salsa, hustle, some argentine tango, bachata, some samba, and merengue. At our last lesson, we tested out of rumba, foxtrot, and east coast swing (graduated from Bronze I to Bronze II for those!). The studio quickly makes you feel like family. Everyone learns your name, welcomes you when you arrive and leave, and are happy to show you the basics or play around with more complicated moves during the group parties. Leaving the Livermore Arthur Murray was as hard as leaving all of our friends because even though we'd only been going there for 5 months, all of the instructors felt like really good friends. I docked Arthur Murray one star because as wonderful as everyone at the studio is, they can be very pushy about getting you to use (and thus need to buy) lots of lessons. I received many phone calls from different members of the Livermore Arthur Murray team to tell me that a slot had opened in so-and-sos schedule on such-and-such day and they wanted to give Mike and me the opportunity to snag that spot before someone else did. We already had a lesson scheduled, so this would either be trying to get us to double up on lessons that day or do private lessons multiple days a week. Avoid! We bought a $48 special price for two "private" lessons. They taught very basic steps and we liked it. Then we sign up for another four "private lessons" for $600 and asked them to teach us more turns because I like being turned. (Yes, girls all are.) They agreed. But then in the all four classes, they only taught us basic steps for 20 minutes, practiced an under arm turn for another 10 minutes and repeated for another 10 minutes and then class ended. For the whole one month, we only learned basic steps and a very simple under arm turn. We've been telling them to teach us more turns every time we were there!!!!!!!!!! but they've just talked, talked, and talked. They never taught us anything new! The lessons were not private at all. We danced with a whole bunch of other people. Several times we had to wait for other couples finish their songs in order to change songs for us to practice. The lessons were also not customized. They asked what we want and then they told us what they were going to teach us. Two different things. I felt like they are completely fraud. For $600 and we learned an under arm turn that several of my friends can easily teach me. Or just go to any social dancing event and learn it in five minutes. Especially they spent more time "talking" to us to buy more lessons than teaching us. Very disgusting! When we decided not to buy more lessons, everyone in the studio changed their attitude toward us, making us feel like we shouldn't come back again. They still owe us one group lesson, but they never call us to schedule it (funny we don't get to have the schedule) or offer a refund. read more

I was living in Livermore for a period of about 6 months while I was assigned to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. I can't say enough good things about this place! I have two-left feet. I'm not joking. I'm not the typical type of person to walk into a club, let alone a dance studio. I was fortunate enough to get Talia as my dance instructor before she left and taking lessons from her and the other teachers has been a life changing experience. =) There's no guarantee that you will have the same life-changing experience I had, since that's mostly attributable to Talia's wonderful personality and character than dance lessons. But you'll have tons of fun. I'm absolutely sure of it. Yes there is a sales pitch. It's a business. The "Free lesson" is there so you can experience their teaching style and the atmosphere of the studio before paying for a lesson. They are all really passionate about what they do and helping their students excel and have fun. Viewed in that light, I don't think they really try to throw you a "sales pitch" but more so they are just excited to work with a new person and see them develop and that enthusiasm might sometimes come off as giving a sales pitch". Once you are an Arthur Murray student, you will always and forever be an Arthur Murray student! The staff and other students are like a second family to me. I am still friends with many of them and we communicate regularly. All the instructors have unique personalities that make taking lessons loads of fun! There's exotic Sophia, sexy Monique, bubbly Janessa, suave Alex, outrageous Steven, hilarious Joey, and happy Katelyn! I know I forgot some people! I'm sorry! So what did I learn in 3 months of dancing? I can handle the basics of foxtrot, waltz, salsa, rumba, samba, hustle, merengue, east coast swing, tango, and cha cha. I am happier, healthier, more confident and I've gone through a career change; I have found my passion and calling in life. Not bad for 3 months. If you really want to have fun, then you must learn all types of dances. Even if they are not your favorite or the one that you are focusing on, the nightly parties and group lessons are a blast and FREE if your taking private lessons! Take the introductory package. Go to every single group lesson and party that you can (there's one every night of the week and they are all free if you are taking private lessons). 4 months ago, I had NO IDEA how to dance. I was the epitome of "step touch" and concentrating hard to not be "up on the down beat"...now, after 3 months of lessons...I have had what I would honestly consider to be my favorite night out ever. My wife (Natalie) and I met with some friends for our friend's birthday, and Natalie and I got to test our dance moves in the real world! We walked onto an empty dance floor and proceeded to ROCK THE HELL OUT OF IT! We danced for almost 3 hours, only taking breaks because Natalie wore "cute shoes", but otherwise we were throwing down. Natalie commented that I had "swagger and hips", and it made her feel like the luckiest girl in the world. When we were leaving a random stranger stopped us in the parking lot and said "You two are such good dancers and are an inspiration..." ....WTF?! I felt fearless and powerful, trained and ready. We successfully danced 5 different dance styles (Swing, Cha Cha, Salsa, Hustle, Nightclub 2 Step) and made every single one look amazing. I was even able to count us in (something I struggle with every lesson) on most songs, and I got us back on the beat when we lost it for whatever reason...I was in control, and it was amazing! Nothing great in life is free, and Arthur Murray is no exception. Yes, it's pricey, but you get ALLOT for your money! Although you technically pay per lesson, you get to have unlimited group lessons (which are offered 3-4 times per week in the evenings). Do the math - that means you get way more "lesson time" for your money than other places... Not to mention that the quality of teaching is exceptional. In the beginning I didn't think that he was actually learn b/c he is very analytical,not artistic at all!!! Also, every lesson was basically "BASICS"!!! It was driving me nuts. i've been taking lessons Arthur Murray for a year and a half, i love the school. Everyone is sooooo friendly. They make the lessons very easy to understand. I've made lots of new friends and it's nice that even though I'm married and my husband doesn't participate, I go there and always have a partner to dance with. They have 3 weekly parties to practice at and lots and lots of group lessons. They have had several professional coaches come in, 3 so far that have been on Dancing With the Stars. I really wanted to like this studio. I wanted an active hobby doing something I really enjoyed like dancing. The staff there is very friendly and my instructor Rene was a delight. Unfortunately the studio and unexpected, pushy sales pitch feels like a cheap timeshare sales experience. After a complimentary lesson, they sit down with you almost like you're about to purchase a car and show you one package that's $500. That's the only option. This includes four private, 40 minute lessons and two practice parties. On your third private lesson, they sit down with you again with no price list or options and tell you that you can continue with the lessons for $18,000. For real? I about fell over. I could learn how to fly a plane for $18,000. The representative at the studio wrote down the price on a piece of paper. See pic. Too pushy Too expensive. I googled dance studio and this is what I found when looking for ballroom dance in Livermore, CA. So I called them, they wouldn't say how much it cost for anything so I assumed it was expensive, but they said the first lesson is free and that I can decide afterward if I want to consider taking lessons there. So I went in that week. My lesson was great (we covered a bunch of dances that I had learned a long time ago). The end of the lesson was when they put the pressure on. I told them that I could not afford any of their programs, so I was cut a deal: $100 for 2 private lessons, 2 group lessons, and a "party" if I showed up at their free open house...so I showed up. HOWEVER, they changed their prices to $150 and 3 private lessons, 2 group lessons, and a "party." they did not do this only to me but I overheard other people discussing this price increase. I decided it was still an okay deal, so I did it. Private lessons: 45 min. I wish they had communicated more with each other because they kept changing their minds on which dance I should be learning when I had already stated which ones I wanted to learn. group lessons: 45 min. they are good...if you like pep rallies. they are way too enthusiastic and I felt as though I was in high school again (couldn't we be working on steps or style rather than how loudly we can shout? we were literally trying to shout louder than the next group over). Also, everyone is overexcited and lock their face in the smile position. We purchased a Groupon deal for 4 visits to the studio. We decided we wanted to try some swing dancing and proceeded to make some appointments. Everyone at the studio was very nice and had a ton of energy. We were paired up with Wendy for our classes. We had a lot of fun and Wendy was fantastic. By the end of our four sessions we were actually dancing, which was great. Wendy was patient and a lot of fun. She meshed very well with us and absolutely knew what she was doing. At times Joey would step in to help out and he was equally a pleasure to work with. The only downside, and the reason for the four stars, is the cost to continue. We really wanted to continue taking classes but the cost is very prohibitive. They dumb down the lessons so it takes longer to learn and teach you dances you don't want to learn, which leads to purchase of more lessons. I get a sense that it is a little cult-ish to me, though If you'd like to join in and spend at least a grand a month for a feeling then do it. They teachers are very young and friendly and seem like they just started their dancing careers and hide behind the brand well. The manager/ owner reminds me of a Las Vegas time share sales associate has been. Here's the warning, once you walk in, good luck getting out as it is a huge trap. I walked into Arthur Murray on a complete whim, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Since I began dancing I have gained poise, fitness, self-confidence, and a fantastic group of friends and Arthur Murray family. From the moment I walked in the door the first time everyone was open and friendly, and the positive energy and support you will find in your first lesson never go away. The staff and students are supportive and help you learn at your own pace. Because Arthur Murray hires people for their teaching ability, the instructors are very insightful and skilled not just at dance but at teaching. I have never felt like I am being condescended to or looked down on because I am having trouble with a concept or because of my remarkably poor balance; instead, the instructors are always looking for the best way to help me understand. Some previous reviews have mentioned that they were put off by a sales pitch. I see their point, but I think that the sales pitch comes across as over the top because EVERYTHING at Arthur Murray is over the top! If you know how much you can spend and make that clear, they will respect that and help you find a way to advance your dancing on your budget. Speaking of money, although private lessons are somewhat pricey, they include unlimited group classes and parties. You won't advance as quickly with fewer private lessons, but the group classes and practice parties provide invaluable practice - and they're a ton of fun! I can unreservedly recommend Arthur Murray, whether you have always wanted to dance or just wonder if it might be fun (like I did when I wandered in one day). I love to dance! I have always loved to dance. I took dance lessons all through my childhood. I learned all styles. One style that always eluded me was ballroom. I always wanted to learn more about it. I even took a few lessons in college just to get a taste. I loved it. Started dancing at Arthur Murray Livermore two years ago. I had no prior dance experience. I immediately felt welcome the minute I walked through the doors. I started with the discovery program which consists of 4 private lessons and group classes. The private lessons provided a sample of all dances I had selected as being interested in learning. Private lessons are 45 minutes in length. Group classes are 5 nights a week and also 45 minutes in length. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights are party nights which occur after group class. Party nights allow you to practice all your moves from private lessons & group classes in a social setting. Parties provide a great opportunity to dance with other students and really put your dancing skills to the test. Every instructor goes through training daily and all of them are very professional. All dance levels are welcome and invited. Beginners will usually fall into a Bronze program and the more advanced might test into a higher level of the Bronze program. All students learn the same school figures and will build upon them to more advanced figures as they progress in their program. Arthur Murray offers many opportunities to showcase your dance skills through Dance-O-Rama's (competitions), solo-showcases (practice competitions), and Extravaganza's (show performances). Overall I highly recommend Arthur Murray Livermore to those with a desire to dance. I had my first dance lesson EVER and I could not have asked for anything more. The staff at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Livermore is extremely friendly. This being my first experience with dance, they made me feel very comfortable. My instructor, Bridgette, was very patient and helpful. You can tell she is passionate about what she does. She made it seem like I had been dancing for years. The manager/instructor, Joey Sena, is very welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. His team emulates these same characteristics. Having competed as a pro athlete, I am glad I have found something that I can still be competitive in, is challenging, and at the same time is much easier on my body. My father and I went here for a couple of dance lessons for our father-daughter dance at my wedding. Everyone was wonderful and William was the best dance instructor. We had so much fun and definitely learned a lot.
