I cannot say enough good things about Elaine's Dance Studio! This is definitely the best dance…read moreschool in Santa Cruz!!! My daughter started with Miss Elaine in the fall of 2013 right before she turned 4 years old. A friend who has two teenage girls made the recommendation and she was spot on with everything she said. My daughter absolutely loved going to class and has learned a lot over the course of 9 months. The 45-minute class is split half and half in with regular ballet and then tap, so you need to bring two pairs of shoes (buy them used next door at Jelly Beanz). Elaine's instruction is the right mix of sweet and firm and she runs a very orderly ballet class. The girls learn a lot about following verbal and physical cues as well as how to stand in a straight line. Elaine gave me and my husband feedback about our daughter throughout the process and was always available for questions before or after class. Classes start in the fall and then run until June. Throughout the class, the kids learn a routine (about 2 minutes long) and practice towards the big recital that is held at the end of June and it is a HUGE DEAL! Elaine has this whole thing down and nobody else puts on a show like she does. The whole group purchases the same costume. The show is held at the Mello Center in Watsonville. There is a rehearsal and then shows on Saturday & Sunday. My daughter was so excited to be in it and it was a huge experience for her to be on stage with hundreds of people in the audience watching her perform. Not to mention, that there was not a dry eye in our row of spectators! We had the best time watching her perform and loved every second of it. I will definitely sign my daughter up for as long as she wants to continue to dance and also look forward to many more recitals.

Neither of us had particularly high expectations - we just wanted our first dance to be as not awkward as possible. Enter Whitney at Palomar Ballroom! We signed up for the 5 class "Wedding Package" and ended up adding another 2 classes because we were having so much fun. Whitney is a phenomenal teacher, answering questions from us that started out as basic as "how do I know where the beat of the song is". She also made each class so fun and lighthearted. We started out thinking we would keep our first dance as short as possible. By the end, we had a fully choreographed dance to a 4 minute song! I can't recommend Whitney and Palomar Ballroom enough!

The learning environment is supportive and professional, without being competitive. The teachers really know their stuff and treat each student as an individual. The dance space is airy and open, the mirrors and floors are high quality. In addition to dance instruction, teachers put attention on safety and understanding how the body works. I also really like how involved the studio is in community activities like Santa Cruz Dance Week and the downtown holiday parade. One of the things that makes this studio stand out, is the artist in residence program and all the great visiting performances from around the country. It brings in artistic talent and cutting edge work to our little corner of the world, helping expand our understanding of dance and our sense of belonging to a broader community. I'm a big fan. Whether you're new to dance, or highly experienced, young or old, I'd highly recommend Motion Pacific.
