This martial arts studio is The Best! Yes, the equipment and studio are clean, and the equipment is always in excellent condition. It is the instructors and leaders, however, that I have been most impressed with. Since the beginning of my family's journey, and everyday since, each instructor has shown me that they genuinely care about their students by their words and actions with all the students. I have seen them get on each student's level to help the youngest or the most timid, feel comfortable on the mat. I have seen the most shy child blossom with confidence, as the instructor leads them in new moves. We started our 4 year old in the Little Dragons class here shortly after his birthday. We signed him up after hearing from several older friends how good karate was for their kids' confidence and strength. After searching a couple of places in Scotts Valley, we signed up for the trial month here because you couldn't beat the deal and they offer evening classes during the week. My son is taught primarily by Miss Franklin, who is easily one of the kindest, warmest people you meet. She commands respect from these energetic little ones in the most impressive way. Seriously. She is patient and encouraging. The kids rise to meet her high expectations because they love her and respect her. The other instructors, and the owner Mr. Nunnely, are all very nice as well. I just have to give Miss Franklin credit though. I can't imagine a better instructor for these kids than her. Not only is my kid learning what he sees as awesome ninja moves, he's understanding self-control, the importance of focus and dedication, and defending oneself in tricky situations. He's learning about bullying, stranger danger, and making his mind and body stronger all at once. I can't say enough good things about how it has influenced him. He's confident and empowered by being in these classes. Nothing beats seeing him beam with pride. And for me, as a parent... well, when I heard Miss Franklin tell the kids during one of the first mat chats that when your parents ask you to do something, you should not just obey, but "obey cheerfully", I knew this would be worth every penny! Seriously though, I appreciate their approach, which includes me as the parent. I love Mr. Nunnely's emails and videos with helpful parenting topics. While I encourage physical exercize, and martial arts offers an opportunity for both cardio, and muscle-building and toning, what my son really gets from Elite Martial Arts training is the instilling of core values to ensure he is a good human being. Self-discipline, respect for self and others, patience, focus, consideration, compassion, positive attitude and confidence are taught and modeled at Elite Martial Arts. Also Elite's training acts as an innoculation for young children against future temptations, as evidenced by their creed, "I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and to avoid anything that could reduce my mental growth or my physical health..." For my son in particular, the Bully Buster seminar was very helpful so that he had the skills to navigate conflicts with more aggressive children. My three sons have all just earned their Orange Belts from Elite, and they couldn't be more excited and focused on their lessons. Even my 5 yr-old is demonstrating some real moves, so I know the instructors are doing something right. I especially like the respect and drive that is instilled in the classes. It might be getting a bit crowded in some of these classrooms, so I hope they do not start over-loading the staff to take on too many kids, as that would be counterproductive and would be one reason I would pull my kids from a martial arts class. I can't speak to the merit of the Karate material because I don't know anything about Karate beyond my daughter loving it. However, I can say this gym has been great for my 7 year old. The staff are always so kind and gentle with the kids. Even the ones with sensitive kids get appropriate attention. The structure is membership based so you pay a flat fee and then there's lessons every day. My 7 year old does go every day so I can say we get our moneys worth. I love that each lesson incorporates a life lesson that teaches important life values such as working hard in school, respecting your teachers and parents, be confident in yourself, being kind to others, etc. For some reason my daughter really takes these lessons to heart so it's improved our lives considerably. The lessons are at convenient times and I always see them cleaning the floors/mats so the place is very clean. My son had the most wonderful experience today at his first private lesson with Instructor Jenny at Elite Martial Arts Academy. We were truly impressed with the professional, friendly and respectful attitude of everyone who took the time to stop and welcome us to the Academy. Elite Martial Arts has changed my life in multiple ways. When Elite Martial Arts opened, I approached Mr. Stone and told him I wanted to help teach. I was a red/black belt when I stopped martial arts many years earlier. Mr. Stone welcomed me with an open and positive approach. I had a lot of "chips" on my shoulder. I was now a cancer survivor. I had some fears about training in martial arts, as I was now much more fragile than I was before cancer. Slowly, but with encouragement, and through a broken back from cancer, and other complications, I achieved the level of black belt. Achieving black belt has given me many gifts. One of which is increased personal relationships with people. Because of the grace and compassion, and reasoning martial arts has given me, I am always successful at my relationships with others. The class structure includes interpersonal skills for handling challenges at school, academic performance, and attitude and manners at home - it's the whole package. Each child is known by name and guided at a level appropriate for their age and physical development. Elite martial arts is a terrible ; it is very bad. It is like a dance, just with some kicks thrown in, it is also really expensive. My kid came home one day sobbing because one of the instructors told him he did really bad on his form. The staff are very bad roll models. Elite has a very negative atmosphere also. Yama has literally made the difference with my 9 year old son. After years of forcing my son in organized sports I finally decided to look behind the conventional baseball and basketball. My fiancé convinced me to look into martial arts. He swore up and down it my kid would love it and his attitude would greatly improve. Guess what? 3 weeks into the program my son LOVES IT also is so much better behaved- the program teaches not only martial arts, strength, and skills, but discipline and respect. Do you know what it's like to have your boy insist on taking out the trash, carry groceries, speak words daily of appreciation? My 4 yr old son is a 'Little Dragon' at Elite and they really do a good job with the little ones. The instructors seems to have a good grasp of the developmental capabilities of 4 & 5 year olds and I would say 85% of the time I am really impressed with how they handle things and the activities they have them do. on rare occasions, I think they expect a little too much or perhaps run a little low on patients, but hey, so do I! lol. But for young men who probably have not taken any early childhood education classes...very impressive! I would recommend the little dragon class to any of my parent friends. Our family has been with YAMA now for years. We have enjoyed seeing so many instructors rise up from assistants on the mat to taking over as head instructors. We have found that the more you get to know the instructors and the more time you put into the program, the more you will get out of it. Our favorite instructor these days is Mr. Brent Meakin. He does an outstanding job of both connecting personally with the kids on the mat and being disciplined/ demanding respect. He inspires my little ones (currently 8 and 5 years of age). They love coming through the front door and finding him on the mat - always with a friendly face that immediately breaks the ice for them. He helps the students to get comfortable getting onto the mat for some fun and then he consistently challenges them to do better and push themselves harder. Elite is the best thing to happen to my son. Before Elite, he struggled with focus, discipline, and emotional control. After a week of martial arts at Elite, he was so much better in all these areas. He has been here two years now and every month gets better and better. Recently he was backsliding in all areas during a time of emotional upheaval. I was severely depressed and my therapist told me to start Martial Arts. I was so sore the first week I couldn't sit down normally, but it quickly obliterated my depression. It became one of my favorite places to be, and I've met many kind, wonderful, motivating people in the process. I became a happier person. When I had to take two months off for surgery, all I could think about was going back. It was driving me so insane that I couldn't go that I started exercising on my own. I've also noticed that the more I exercise, the healthier I eat, because sugar often makes me sick when I exercise a lot. I've found that breathing exercises and punching combos help calm anxiety, forms help with focus, and the self defense techniques make me feel safer. Elite has fully turned my life around for the better. Of all my goals, I know one I will stick to is becoming a black belt someday. read more

Yama has been amazing for my son. He has been there for a year and a half! I can't say enough great things about Mr. Stone and he team. When Kellen started at 4 he struggled to stay focus and motivated on certain days. The instructors were always positive and supportive while gently teaching what was important not only in regards to forms and activities but life skills. One of the biggest affirmation that Yama was the place for my son, was one day after class Kellen was acting up as typical 4 years olds do. Mr. Stone was walking out front and overheard Kellen being disrespectful to me. In the most gentle and firm manner, Mr. Stone spoke with Kellen about decisions we make, how to respect me (his mom), and that a yellow belt doesn't act that way.
