If you are looking for a fun, educational, and supportive martial arts school, you have found it! We absolutely love it here. My son has been attending for years, and during that time, we've made so many wonderful friends. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance--it's focused on teaching kindness, respect, and discipline, but in a way that keeps things engaging and genuine fun for the kids. I highly recommend it! read more

This place is just amazing! The curriculum, the instructors, the way the classes are structured and the flexibility they provide in terms of class schedule - amazing! Our daughter tried somewhere else first and hated it. We thought she would never go back to MA until she experience Innovative Martial Arts through a friend's B-Day party. She asked us to sign her up right away which shocked us give her previous experience in another SVL place. She is now green belt and still lovin' it! Bottom line: this is THE place for martial arts in Scotts Valley/Santa Cruz. Nobody gets remotely close to it! This is IT! read more

I highly recommend Innovative Martial Arts to anyone looking for an effective mix of Martial Arts whether gung ho or intimidated. Great teachers and community. Our 4y old son is enrolled in their "little dragons" program, and he has shown tremendous growth in confidence and ability to listen. They set a great pace of activities with instructions and levels for the little ones. Very happy we discovered Innovative Martial Arts! read more

This martial arts studio is The Best! Yes, the equipment and studio are clean, and the equipment is always in excellent condition. It is the instructors and leaders, however, that I have been most impressed with. Since the beginning of my family's journey, and everyday since, each instructor has shown me that they genuinely care about their students by their words and actions with all the students. I have seen them get on each student's level to help the youngest or the most timid, feel comfortable on the mat. I have seen the most shy child blossom with confidence, as the instructor leads them in new moves. I truly believe that each person who works here has a special calling on their life to make martial arts accessible to all children. read more

What a gem! We signed our eight year old daughter up and immediately she loved it. It transformed her over just a couple of months - she gained so much self confidence and belief in herself because of this wonderful community of martial artists. I even signed up, too, so we can go on the journey together. read more

We started our 4 year old in the Little Dragons class here shortly after his birthday. We signed him up after hearing from several older friends how good karate was for their kids' confidence and strength. After searching a couple of places in Scotts Valley, we signed up for the trial month here because you couldn't beat the deal and they offer evening classes during the week. My son is taught primarily by Miss Franklin, who is easily one of the kindest, warmest people you meet. She commands respect from these energetic little ones in the most impressive way. Seriously. She is patient and encouraging. The kids rise to meet her high expectations because they love her and respect her. The other instructors, and the owner Mr. Nunnely, are all very nice as well. I just have to give Miss Franklin credit though. I can't imagine a better instructor for these kids than her. Not only is my kid learning what he sees as awesome ninja moves, he's understanding self-control, the importance of focus and dedication, and defending oneself in tricky situations. He's learning about bullying, stranger danger, and making his mind and body stronger all at once. I can't say enough good things about how it has influenced him. He's confident and empowered by being in these classes. Nothing beats seeing him beam with pride. And for me, as a parent... well, when I heard Miss Franklin tell the kids during one of the first mat chats that when your parents ask you to do something, you should not just obey, but "obey cheerfully", I knew this would be worth every penny! Seriously though, I appreciate their approach, which includes me as the parent. I love Mr. Nunnely's emails and videos with helpful parenting topics. If you're thinking about signing your kid up for martial arts, don't hesitate. Innovative Martial Arts will not disappoint! read more

While I encourage physical exercize, and martial arts offers an opportunity for both cardio, and muscle-building and toning, what my son really gets from Elite Martial Arts training is the instilling of core values to ensure he is a good human being. Self-discipline, respect for self and others, patience, focus, consideration, compassion, positive attitude and confidence are taught and modeled at Elite Martial Arts. Also Elite's training acts as an innoculation for young children against future temptations, as evidenced by their creed, "I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and to avoid anything that could reduce my mental growth or my physical health..." For my son in particular, the Bully Buster seminar was very helpful so that he had the skills to navigate conflicts with more aggressive children. If you live in the Scotts Valley area and are considering martial arts training for your children or yourself, I highly recommend Elite Martial Arts. read more

My three sons have all just earned their Orange Belts from Elite, and they couldn't be more excited and focused on their lessons. Even my 5 yr-old is demonstrating some real moves, so I know the instructors are doing something right. I especially like the respect and drive that is instilled in the classes. It might be getting a bit crowded in some of these classrooms, so I hope they do not start over-loading the staff to take on too many kids, as that would be counterproductive and would be one reason I would pull my kids from a martial arts class. We all hope that never happens with Elite. read more

My 11 daughter has been attending Elite for many years and I could not be happier. She earned her black belt last year and is now working toward a 2nd degree. Elite teaches their students not only martial arts, but respect, honesty, hard work and perseverance. I view the time and money spent there has an investment rather than an expense. I would strongly encourage anyone who is considering Elite to give it try. read more

Innovative Martial Arts - Martial Arts Near Me - Scotts Valley, California

Elite is the definition of a well-run, small business. The staff, led by Master Elliott Stone, are exceptional. Everyone is friendly, courteous and professional. The kids' classes are fun, appropriate, and teach the children proper values, respect, courtesy and discipline. Elite teaches the kids martial arts, but focuses equally on behavior, respect and others. I signed my two sons (ages 4 and 6) up for the Little Dragons kids' class, and immediately saw a difference in their focus and behavior. They can't wait to attend class!!! I have been so impressed, that I decided to sign up and begin practicing martial arts again after a 15 year break, and it's been a great decision. Kudos to Master Stone and his staff!! read more

I can't speak to the merit of the Karate material because I don't know anything about Karate beyond my daughter loving it. However, I can say this gym has been great for my 7 year old. The staff are always so kind and gentle with the kids. Even the ones with sensitive kids get appropriate attention. The structure is membership based so you pay a flat fee and then there's lessons every day. My 7 year old does go every day so I can say we get our moneys worth. I love that each lesson incorporates a life lesson that teaches important life values such as working hard in school, respecting your teachers and parents, be confident in yourself, being kind to others, etc. For some reason my daughter really takes these lessons to heart so it's improved our lives considerably. The lessons are at convenient times and I always see them cleaning the floors/mats so the place is very clean. I'd recommend this gym for any child or adult who are looking to have more discipline and self confidence. read more

My youngest son has been attending Elite for many years now. He thrives at Elite and we are very happy with his progress. He is on track to become a black belt before entering highschool (probably sooner than that) Owner and staff go out of their way to help with questions, testing preparations and provide positive feedback to the students and parents. We are looking forward to attending Elite for years to come. read more

My son had the most wonderful experience today at his first private lesson with Instructor Jenny at Elite Martial Arts Academy. We were truly impressed with the professional, friendly and respectful attitude of everyone who took the time to stop and welcome us to the Academy. The instructor was patient and encouraging and really helped my son to overcome his shyness with new people. He learned punches, kicks and even broke his first board during his first lesson! He came home excited to go back. If your child is shy or has had trouble with bullies, this school is a wonderful community that promotes quality values like respect towards yourself and others as well as the importance of self discipline in all things. They offer VERY flexible payment plans for every budget. The class schedule is wonderful and we signed up to attend two classes per week. Flexible attendance means that we will be able to attend classes at our convenience. They also encourage parent/student/customer feedback and take the time to listen and make changes to provide a truly elite learning environment with quality instructors. We highly recommend the Elite Martial Arts Academy for kids and adults alike. Special thanks for everyone for making my son's first experience wonderful! read more

It's average. The teachers and owner are a bit crusty. The floors desperately need to be mopped. My child has black feet when we leave. Pricey! It's the only game in town, so I doubt they will ever be short of customers. read more

He has already learn so much and the open schedule is really helpful!! Thank you Elite!!!! read more

Elite Martial Arts has changed my life in multiple ways. When Elite Martial Arts opened, I approached Mr. Stone and told him I wanted to help teach. I was a red/black belt when I stopped martial arts many years earlier. Mr. Stone welcomed me with an open and positive approach. I had a lot of "chips" on my shoulder. I was now a cancer survivor. I had some fears about training in martial arts, as I was now much more fragile than I was before cancer. Slowly, but with encouragement, and through a broken back from cancer, and other complications, I achieved the level of black belt. Achieving black belt has given me many gifts. One of which is increased personal relationships with people. Because of the grace and compassion, and reasoning martial arts has given me, I am always successful at my relationships with others. Where most people see a failure of a situation, I see the opposite. I have the ability to turn any situation into a positive experience. I was blessed with being an assistant trainer at Elite Martial Arts for many years. I strongly recommend this school for it's unique ability to help everyone be the best individual they can become. Thank you Elite Martial Arts, not just Mr. Stone, but the entire staff. As quickly as you can, become a part of this unique family. ~Jeanne Riedel read more

If you want a place your kids can learn martial arts and wonderful, positive life skills, this is the place! My kids, ages 12 and 9 both attend classes here and it's been great to see them progress over the last 9 months. Not only are they developing strong martial arts skills, but my daughter continues to develop more confidence and my son is learning about perseverance. The staff is really talented, encouraging and positive, always leading the classes with an important life topic and teaching the kids about respect for themselves and others. Mr. Stone has done a terrific job creating a safe, friendly, supportive atmosphere where kids can learn and grow. I know the lessons they are learning at Elite Martial Arts will stay with them throughout their lives. Additionally, the cage fitness classes rock! Jenny is terrific at tailoring exercises to your needs and you will get an amazing workout in just 30 minutes. read more

Elite Martial Arts teaches much more than just kicking and punching. The class structure includes interpersonal skills for handling challenges at school, academic performance, and attitude and manners at home - it's the whole package. Each child is known by name and guided at a level appropriate for their age and physical development. When my 6-year old daughter is behaving in an inappropriate way at home, the phrase "What do you think Mr. Stone would say?" usually causes her to stop, think about courtesy, modesty, and respect, and then adjust her actions accordingly. Thanks EMA! read more

My daughter has been attending Elite's krav maga classes for several weeks, and is loving it. The students in the class come from a wide range of abilities and age, and the staff uses that as a strength. The instruction is low b.s., professional, and non-judgmental. She is learning to fight, and she is learning respect and a true warrior ethos: fight only when needed, and then don't hold back. We are so grateful for Elliott and his staff. read more

I'm not a martial arts expert, but I am an educator. I wanted my kids to have a chance to learn the discipline and routine of martial arts in a compassionate and respectful atmosphere. In this way, Yama has exceeded my expectations. My kids are learning, they are motivated, and their confidence is increasing. I'm very pleased with our experience there. read more

Elite martial arts is a terrible ; it is very bad. It is like a dance, just with some kicks thrown in, it is also really expensive. My kid came home one day sobbing because one of the instructors told him he did really bad on his form. The staff are very bad roll models. Elite has a very negative atmosphere also. And one last thought please don't ever send your kids here. If I could give them no stars I would. read more

Yama has literally made the difference with my 9 year old son. After years of forcing my son in organized sports I finally decided to look behind the conventional baseball and basketball. My fiancé convinced me to look into martial arts. He swore up and down it my kid would love it and his attitude would greatly improve. Guess what? 3 weeks into the program my son LOVES IT also is so much better behaved- the program teaches not only martial arts, strength, and skills, but discipline and respect. Do you know what it's like to have your boy insist on taking out the trash, carry groceries, speak words daily of appreciation? I do and I can attribute so much of this to Yama- they enforce what we are preaching at home. My son LOVES CLASS, looks forward to every Tuesday and Thursday- and is making so many friends. The teachers, regardless of class size show individual attention to every student, they praise and direction. This program is amazing, the staff is amazing, it's worth every penny. Thank you Yama and thank god no more shack shack duty at never ending baseball games my son had no interest in anyway. read more

I have been very impressed with Elite Martial Arts. My 6 year old son has been attending classes here for almost a year. The instructors at Elite teach by example -- modeling respect, kindness and strength of character. My son has gained physical strength as well as the importance of a positive, never give up attitude. Plus he is having so much fun and walks out of each class with a sense of personal pride. Thank you Elite! read more

My 4 yr old son is a 'Little Dragon' at Elite and they really do a good job with the little ones. The instructors seems to have a good grasp of the developmental capabilities of 4 & 5 year olds and I would say 85% of the time I am really impressed with how they handle things and the activities they have them do. on rare occasions, I think they expect a little too much or perhaps run a little low on patients, but hey, so do I! lol. But for young men who probably have not taken any early childhood education classes...very impressive! I would recommend the little dragon class to any of my parent friends. I think this is great prep for kindergarten! read more

Our family has been with YAMA now for years. We have enjoyed seeing so many instructors rise up from assistants on the mat to taking over as head instructors. We have found that the more you get to know the instructors and the more time you put into the program, the more you will get out of it. Our favorite instructor these days is Mr. Brent Meakin. He does an outstanding job of both connecting personally with the kids on the mat and being disciplined/ demanding respect. He inspires my little ones (currently 8 and 5 years of age). They love coming through the front door and finding him on the mat - always with a friendly face that immediately breaks the ice for them. He helps the students to get comfortable getting onto the mat for some fun and then he consistently challenges them to do better and push themselves harder. He has inspired my little ones to want to do better. Thank you for the continued hard work and effort. read more

Elite is the best thing to happen to my son. Before Elite, he struggled with focus, discipline, and emotional control. After a week of martial arts at Elite, he was so much better in all these areas. He has been here two years now and every month gets better and better. Recently he was backsliding in all areas during a time of emotional upheaval. A few kind, firm encouragements from Mr. Stone and everything turned around. From that moment on he has no longer had issues at school, has become a pleasure at home, helping with chores and being so respectful and has gained a confidence and determination I have never seen in him before. The entire staff at Elite is phenomenal. The owner, Elliot Stone is inspiring and impressive in his martial arts mastery as well as in his accomplishments in business and in life. It is clear that he cares deeply for this studio and the community he has built here. He takes the impact he has on the lives of all his students very seriously and is constantly working to make Elite better and better. The head teacher, Mr. Schimmel is a remarkable martial artist in his own right, as well as a truly remarkable teacher. He manages to be kind while still being firm, to create a fun atmosphere while still maintaining high standards for training, and is gifted at breaking moves and techniques down and explaining them so they are easy to understand, even when the technique is challenging. All the teachers live up to these extremely high standards set and modeled by Mr. Stone and Mr. Schimmel and the administrative staff is always friendly, welcoming and helpful. Jenny Downs, the manager, is one of the warmest, friendliest people I've ever met, not to mention an amazing and inspirational black belt in her own right. Elite is a powerful force for bettering our community and helping to shape the leaders of tomorrow. Children and adults alike, whether they intend to ever be professional in martial arts or not, benefit from being part of the program at Elite. Our family is profoundly grateful for Elite in our lives. read more

I was severely depressed and my therapist told me to start Martial Arts. I was so sore the first week I couldn't sit down normally, but it quickly obliterated my depression. It became one of my favorite places to be, and I've met many kind, wonderful, motivating people in the process. I became a happier person. When I had to take two months off for surgery, all I could think about was going back. It was driving me so insane that I couldn't go that I started exercising on my own. I've also noticed that the more I exercise, the healthier I eat, because sugar often makes me sick when I exercise a lot. I've found that breathing exercises and punching combos help calm anxiety, forms help with focus, and the self defense techniques make me feel safer. Elite has fully turned my life around for the better. Of all my goals, I know one I will stick to is becoming a black belt someday. read more

Yama has been amazing for my son. He has been there for a year and a half! I can't say enough great things about Mr. Stone and he team. When Kellen started at 4 he struggled to stay focus and motivated on certain days. The instructors were always positive and supportive while gently teaching what was important not only in regards to forms and activities but life skills. One of the biggest affirmation that Yama was the place for my son, was one day after class Kellen was acting up as typical 4 years olds do. Mr. Stone was walking out front and overheard Kellen being disrespectful to me. In the most gentle and firm manner, Mr. Stone spoke with Kellen about decisions we make, how to respect me (his mom), and that a yellow belt doesn't act that way. With out even being asked he apologized to me and Mr. Stone winked at me. Thank you Yama for helping Kellen learn important skills and lessons. You guys are the best! read more
