I was able to try an ice cream flavored with their local Sour Orange used in cochinita pabil, and my wife was able to try their take on a local pumpkin and even a local mushroom! All flavors exceeded my expectations and made me wish I returned each day to try a new flavor. Instead of a tourist shop serving heaps of Oreo-flavored gelato, you will be greeted with a friendly smile and a touch of the Yucatan. Fast forward to my second trip to Merida and a local recommended Colon on the first day of my trip. This place has been around for over a hundred years, so clearly they are doing something right. I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. The sorbet at Colon is so refreshing on a hot day in the Yucatan (read: every day in the Yucatan). I was afraid it would be too sweet, but depending on the flavor, it is more light and refreshing. I love corn flavored desserts, so the corn was probably my favorite. The mamey is one of their signatures and it is very sweet (because mamey is very sweet) but I think it's worth trying because it is so unique. It's like brown sugar sweet potato sorbet. The ambiance is old fashioned and lively. I highly recommend stopping when you're walking the boulevard.
