The bench was purchased by my mother, probably around 40 years ago, and was in her huge backyard and garden. She had 5 benches, and 5 kids, and this one was mine after she passed in 2011. Over the years I have had it refinished, but time took a toll on the structure of it. Replacing it with a new bench did not seem satisfying- how could I discard this precious (to me) piece of history that contained so many memories of my mother and her beautiful yard? Giorgio came out and took a look, (remember he is a fine antique restorer) and he said he would like to take on the project. The price was more than I thought it would be, (way more than a new bench), but he explained that he would have to replace all of the wood, all of the hardware and restabilize the bench. It would take approximately 1 month, taking it to his studio. I agreed. He took the bench away in pieces. The old bench was oak, and he we went over options for replacement and settled on heat treated ash, an enduring high-quality choice that would have a similar look to the original oak. Giorgio delivered the bench back to my San Francisco yard. I was so happy! The quality craftsmanship of Giorgio Di Costanzo filled that bench with the magic of my mother's memory to be enjoyed for years to come.

The first was a 50 year old screenprint that suffered from considerable foxing which she removed flawlessly from within the ink. The second was a vintage screenprint that was totally destroyed in shipping. The box was crushed leaving severe creases in multiple places and she magically flattened it and drastically reduced the creases so that they are not visible without close examination. Since then she has removed water and mildew stains from multiple prints. Julie is a gem in San Francisco and we're lucky to have her.

They restored it completely and gorgeously. They then surprised me with a lengthy report about the process with pictures of the work along the way. I was thoroughly impressed. I think we've all grown accustomed to shoddy service in so many realms. Not here. Last week when I was about to import another piece but had questions about it from afar, they were happy to look at it and make recommendations, assured me that it looked in good quality but was surely on paper instead of canvas. The artist is now painting us a new one on canvas. We're thrilled! I had spotted it in Puerto Rico and since I'm of Dutch heritage it resonated with me and I had to have it. When I finally purchased it months later and had it shipped to me, looking at it closely, I realized it was in poor shape. The lining was mildewed, frame had some chips in it and the overall painting was dirty (as one might expect since it was old). I wanted to have it cleaned so I did some research and came upon Sysphere Restoration. Sy was very personable, explaining the process of what needed to be done. I was balking at the cost but since I really liked the painting I decided to splurge on it. The end result was amazing. The scene was so much brighter and clean looking, the linen renewed and the frame refurbished. Sy breathed new life into it. Claudio Mariani personally examined the elephant, and we discussed how it might be repaired. He basically welded the break, which requires tremendous skill because the whole elephant would melt at high temperature. He had to drip drops of melted metal into the break. With skilled painting, the elephant was restored like new. In the process of visiting, I was stunned by the high quality of items of the Antique gallery. It was like visiting Hearst Castle on steroids, or a private estate in Florence. I learned that Claudio was trained in Florence decades ago. He came to San Francisco in the late 70's and built a very successful antique gallery, restoration and custom creation business. His restoration and reproduction shop is filled with extraordinary craftsmen, specializing in wood carving, leather restoration, painting, filigree and gilding, and much more. Many of the craftsmen have worked with Claudio for more than 20 years. I felt like I was visiting an old Italian craftsmen guild. Claudio says that he is probably the last guy in the US who works with leather, using 200-300 year old tools that enable him to restore or recreate antiques that span several centuries. You get what you pay for! This shop works on museum quality pieces and is doing fantastic work creating unique pieces for decorators and people who collect high-end museum quality pieces.
