This is a unique public art trail made up of four beautiful murals featuring augmented-reality using a phone app called Artivive. These pieces are scattered throughout Washington Plaza, all within walking distance. Two at the San Leandro archway on W. Estudillo Ave and Hays Street, one at the Tequila Grill, around the corner on the side of the building, and one in an alleyway outside Bevbox liquor store.
The four murals in this exhibit, in no particular order, are THE HEART, a colorful representation of San Leandro's vibrant community, THE POP, a cute pop-goes-the-weasel image that delights viewers through the app, THE DIP, a playful depiction of modern elements of the city along with living creatures of the land, sea, and sky, described as a "perfect blend of nature and city life", and my fave, THE BEGINNING (portraying the City of San Leandro: The Cherry City) which presents the most creative transformation through the app. The initial scene, featuring the cherry orchards that gave San Leandro its title as "The Cherry City", transforms into a diverse community filled with animated images of landmarks, natural scenery, ethnic foods, and mythical creatures. It is certainly a fun and interesting piece.
The streets aren't the cleanest here. I encountered foul odors and homeless people yelling out nonsense during my recent visit, the area prone to vandalism. There's even graffiti on at least one of the art pieces. But it's still an amusing collection of interactive art symbolizing the city of San Leandro, and I genuinely enjoyed seeing these artworks come to life. read more
