There are many different artworks and sculptures decorating the walkways of the South Shore Center in Alameda. This has got to be my favorite! A handful of animals depicted in great detail with just a tinge of color along what almost looks like a ferris wheel from a distance, mounted on a pedestal enabling passersby to view the piece with the sky as a backdrop. Located near center court, appropriately positioned between Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) and Modern Mouse (which is actually a gift shop), I enjoyed admiring this piece on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
The artist, Brad Rude, has created many similar and creative bronze sculptures, many of his works which can be found in various locations on the west coast, mainly in Washington where Rude has resided for most of his life. His portrayals of animals are combined with objects and elements that symbolize or call to mind human emotions or characteristics. I am definitely a fan of the quirkiness of his artworks. And this one's playful enough that the kids would probably be amused by it too. read more
