Had a wonderful time watching Frankenstein. The seats are not comfortable enough for such a long movie. It was weird that there was nobody checking for tickets at the door. The inside looks so nice and renew. Love what they did!!! I wanted to see if one of the independent films I worked on could be shown here but it was way out of our budget. They don't have a parking lot. It's street parking or paid parking (3-5 hrs $10.55). Street parking is very hard in this area. read more

The Motion Picture Academy doesn't always get it right but at last night's Oscar presentation, it did on at least two counts. It gave recognition to independent film making and independent theaters. The Art Theater is a constant representative of both. The Oscar nominated animated short films, along with documentary live action shorts have been presented annually. The animated film shorts has become more thoughtful and introspective each year. While the winner from Iran was quite beautiful, (why must seagulls always be the bad guy?), Japan's Magic Candies was my favorite. The Art Theater isn't a snack and nap type theater so be prepared to sit upright. read more

Went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the venue was nice! Not super small or super big, love how historical and old it is. Staff members were very nice and helpful! $6 beers, and other snacks! Bathrooms were clean as well. There was an incident of someone getting sick in the bathroom and the staff handled it well. We would definitely come again to watch other shows!! The area it's in is so walkable too, and there's parking available on the street or in the lot across the street! read more

A little late to post, but better late than never! I came here on September 2nd to watch Sorry Baby and left feeling so grateful that Long Beach has a gem like this art theater. Parking can sometimes be a challenge depending on the time of day, but it's always worth it. The theater is well kept and has such a welcoming vibe. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the concessions go beyond the usual. They serve popcorn with vegan butter, hot dogs, candy, and even alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. And if you prefer, you're welcome to bring in your own food and beverages, which makes it even more unique. I love that this single-screen theater showcases a mix of first-run, independent, and international films. They keep their website updated with showtimes, plus they have out a printed monthly calendar for those who like to plan ahead. They also offer a stamp card, after 5 visits you get a free popcorn, and after 10, a free movie. Every visit has been a great experience, and this one was no different. If you haven't been, you're truly missing out. Come see a film here and you won't regret it. read more

My husband and I walked in late one Friday night out of curiosity to see what this theater is all about. We were given a movie schedule, and they also told us about the food and beverage options. Nearly 100 years of cinema, community, and entertainment... The Art Theatre of Long Beach has been showing flicks since 1925. Restored, remodeled, and remastered much like the films, shorts, and specials this longstanding Los Angeles County theatre displays in a single room. I'd heard of the Art Theatre but was never lucky enough to attend, but someone awesome asked me out for a movie with lunch to follow, and I was glad he did. Taking in the layout and specials and soaking up the energy of a 97-year-old space was pretty cool. Matinee seating is only $12 (shows before 5PM) with general only $1.50 more and discounts for students w/ ID and seniors. The concessions included an assortment of moviegoer/lover favorites, including vegan-friendly popcorn, snacks, and wine... Think I might need to move close to Long Beach and enjoy this place often!! The prices are more than fair, especially compared to big chain theaters such as AMC, Cinemark, and Regal to name a few. You can seat wherever you can find a seat and you don't have to rush to be there right before the picture starts as they do give it a nice beat beforehand as well as show a nice short or clips before your feature presentation. I'm really glad I got to enjoy the Oscar winner The Third Man (1949) starring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. Huge film noir fan, so it was great to go and see this classic in black & white. Great for Sunday, Saturday, or really any day of the week, though Fridays seem to have the most showings. On holiday weekends like Mother's Day in May, they have a Mamma Mia Mimosa special and showing that I'm sure is to be lively if interested. All are welcome at the Art Theatre (rainbow flags flying high)... even if parking gets a bit thin (some paid parking lots close by), you won't be disappointed with the A.T. in L.B. experience. A first time visit! Nice size screen, good sound system, comfortable seats, beautiful building, and very clean! The staff was friendly , and the service at the snack bar was quick. Definitely planning on going back. This is partially a revival house, but some first run films as well. Parking in the neighborhood is definitely not easy, so allow time. read more

I hadn't been here in years and it is right around the corner from where I live. Got tickets to the LGBTQ+ film festival for a late morning screening and I also had forgotten that the theatre was remodeled a few years ago. Staff has always been friendly and the seats were fairly comfortable after the renovation. I need to keep up with the latest movies showing here rather than going to a big box movie theater. read more

The Art Theatre offers mainstream and indie films. You can see a film as mainstream as Maestro or as offbeat as Tie me Up Tie Me Down. Saw Stop Making Sense: 40th Anniversary edition here recently. The theatre was fabulously restored to its original 1920s deco glory. The seats are comfortable enough for a movie, but if you are looking for the Lazy Boy full recline experience of a big box Movie chain, you will not find it here. A big plus is Art Du Vin, a wine bar next door, that has a diverse wine selection and small cheese plates to go with. They will give you a Go Cup to take a glass into the theatre right next door. read more

Love the Art Theatre! So happy they survived and were able to refurbish the interior. I recently saw "Barbie" and this week saw "Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd". And I've already got tickets for "Stop Making Sense: 40th Anniversary in 4K!" in early October. We've enjoyed many a film at the Art Theater .... the experience is always a refreshing diversion from the large chain theaters who seem to BLAST the soundtrack at ear-splitting levels, that is after forcing the attendees to sit through a barrage of not applicable ads. Folks at the Art are far better behaved (NOT talking & texting throughout the feature). We loved Cillian Murphy's newest film; it seems the rest of the audience did as well. This is an absolute iconic part of Long Beach. Most beautiful theaters like this in Southern California have been converted to churches or medical offices (noooooo!!!) but here is a gem of a bygone era of movie magic. At the art theater you will instantly remember how magical a few hours can be in the right theater. From an afternoon matinee to a midnight romp with the rocky horror picture show this place has it all! We went here to see the maestro. the owner of the art theater also owns the wine bar, next-door, and Alder and sage across the street so we stopped in for a glass of wine before the movie. The staff is really friendly. The movie was great. It's kind of old-school seating, but comfortable enough for a two hour movie. Went here for the first time after being invited the day prior but not being able to make it. Cool spot with an old school vibe. There is one ticket taker so you get your concessions at the same spot. One theater with comfy seats. For anyone who likes sitting in the back, here's no need here. Seems farther back so the middle may be the best spot for You. You can get your tickets in advance which is a good idea. Parking looked scarce but there are plenty of buses nearby. They're free right now anyway. Great location around shops and restaurants and the guy at concessions was nice. There's also a chance to see your name on the big screen by being a member. read more

The theater may be old, but the seats are modern and very comfortable. The sound system is also top-notch. The only downside is that the theater does not have its own parking lot. Street parking can be tricky, even on a weekday. My whole family watched "The Isle of Dogs" here, which happens to be a wonderful film. My ten-year-old son declared it to be his favorite movie. It's too bad that this theater doesn't attract a bigger audience. read more

This is a special little theater. It was built in the 20's as a silent film venue. According to its website, it is the only remaining theater of its kind in Long Beach. I love going to historical movie theaters and this was one I definitely wanted to check out. I love the architecture, tiny lobbies and antiquated ticket booths of these treasured places. It is always a special treat to watch a movie in a old historic theater. The Art Theater is located along" Retro Row". Vintage clothing stores, several restaurants, cute shops and even a roller skate shop take residence here. I visited the theater to see "Fantastic Fungi", a documentary about the amazing power of mushrooms to heal the planet and humankind (I highly recommend this movie btw...the time lapse photography is absolutely stunning and its overall message is so moving, I even shed a few tears). But back to the theater. I loved it. It was spotless. Restrooms were spotless. Popcorn was delicious (and a medium size bag was free with Yelp check-in). Seats were comfy. Staff was polite, friendly and professional. Coupled with such a fantastic movie, It was the perfect experience. Street parking is scarce so I just used the small pay lot at the corner of Cherry and 4th. 2 dollars per hour during the day (5 dollar flat fee at night) and you can pay at a kiosk with a credit card. I loved the vintage snack commercial they played before the movie. It was so charming and fit well with the ambiance of the theater. I can't wait to return. Apparently they show Rocky Horror regularly and offer special events like movie singalongs. This is my kind of theater. read more

Loved this place since the present owners took it over, cleaned it out and up, and made it the coolest place in town to see anything. Today, though, I was motivated to write a five-star. The theater offered a Max Fleischer cartoon event, which was outstanding in the first place--both cartoons and filmed history, plus a talk from a young enthusiast--these were the 'tunes of my kidhood. But the sprinkles on the sundae happened when the usual cell phone light distractions from nearby patrons attracted not only the unwilling attention of other viewers but the employees, who asked them politely to stop. One group did; the other decided to continue. They were persuaded to leave. Difference between a real neighborhood cinema and a huge movie house. read more

Went to the Art Theatre to watch Won't You Be My Neighbor. I appreciate the original architecture. The theatre is clean, stylish, and spacious. They have drinks, candy, and popcorn available for purchase. The movie tickets can be purchased inside at the concession stand or in advance online. Since the theatre is located on Retro Row, there are plenty of restaurants to eat at and stores to shop at either before or after watching a movie. read more

Nice local theater on 4th street in Long Beach. Came here to see a film screening during the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the theater was inside. Comfortable chairs, but the non rising seats makes it difficult at times to read the subtitles on the screen. Didn't see a parking lot, so we needed up parking on the streets. Be sure to come early because street parking is tough in this area due to nearby food and shopping establishments. read more

Last night was my first time here. I'm so lucky! They were playing the Premier of Finding Joseph I. This is like the cutest movie theater I've ever been to I'd say it holds about 200 people, give or take a couple. They serve popcorn and candy and drinks, even beers Anyway, if they show docs like the HR from Bad Brains documentary all the time, I'm gonna have to move to long Beach Such a great movie! I arrived there early (11:15 am) but the theatre was still closed as their first show was at noon. So I walked to nearby coffee shop to skill time and enjoy a cup of coffee. While waiting, I saw a sign to purchase tickets online. Since I had the time, I did just that. Once they opened, I walked in, showed my tix and vaccination card, and that was all because I already had my mask on. It was quiet and gave me a feeling that the movie was playing just for me..though there were other customers. I would go back for more, as this theatre plays artistic ones! The small-town theater is well... small. We walked in thinking there would be at least 2 theatre rooms, rather there was one! I really did not enjoy my experience here. The theatre room itself is pretty lengthy. What I mean by that is its big length wise, but not width. The screen is not big enough to see if you are all the way in the back. It just was not loud enough, nor was the screen big enough. I did like the experience though! The restrooms are clean and small. Pretty decor as I posted in the pictures. The concession stand is something I had a huge problem with. Our movie started at around 10:45 PM I believe and I got up at around 11:15 PM to buy some popcorn and to my surprise it was all in the trash. The lady working there said they close the concession stand shortly after the last movie which I thought was ridiculous because that wouldn't happen at any mainstream theater. There wasn't a lot of food as you can see in the pictures. And I was a little confused as to why they would throw the popcorn away. Really disappointing. Also the odd smell in the theater definitely didn't help focus on the movie !!!! read more

Updated review and this place is great! I love how their beginning specialty screenings of classics, horror movies (HELL YES!) and local premieres. So great to have an independent theater fully running locally because it's so hectic going all the way out to LA! I've experienced the Egyptian Theater, The Million Dollar Theater, The Vista, and The New Beverly along with many SoCal cinephiles. The art theatre in Long Beach is worth a visit! read more

Support your local Art Theatre! This retro theater has been gracing us with independent and art films since 1925. There are plenty of restaurants located on the same street, a wine bar attached, and they offer a small selection of beer, wine, popcorn and snacks inside. Truthfully I was expecting it to be run down but the seats were comfortable and in good shape and the sound quality wasn't lacking. There is a stage in front of the screen and they show The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday night at midnight. They offer a stamp card in which 5 stamps earns you a free popcorn, or you can hold out for 10 stamps and earn one free movie. Wednesdays are double stamp days so you get even more bang for your buck. read more

If you are a fan of a smaller intimate old-school theatre, with older chairs then this is for you. There is no head support on the chairs and some of the cushions are worn down a bit. If you don't mind it is a long theatre, narrow with a small screen at the end. I don't mind it too much if you sit in the lower half, but the upper half you can't see the film that well, because the screen isn't that big. I went for the nostalgia to enjoy the old style theatre, It was fun, but if you want more amenities, food options, lounge seating and anything in a modern theatre then I would look elsewhere. Otherwise its a nice trip to a dated theatre for a fun movie with a date. read more

I love the art theater for playing shows you can't find at other theaters! I've been here four times this week catching all of the Oscar nominated shorts, which they play each year. There's wine and beer at concessions in addition to the usual movie theater fare, and your ticket gets you discounts at other 4th Street eateries after the show. Learned about the Long Beach arts theatre while researching Lola's across the street . Walked in and was amazed at how clean the building was . The staff was very attentive and served us some snacks and drinks at a reasonable price . Once inside the movie room we enjoyed the film and the quality of the presentation . The restoration of the theatre has been done to perfection and the upkeep is immaculate . Parking is available at a pay per car automatic teller across the street . 3 hours will cost you about $3 which you can use for the theatre and other nearby businesses. Overall a great experience and you get a discount at Lola's if you purchase movie tickets. read more

I recently saw Social Network at The Art Theater. I really enjoyed the venue. There are some things to consider, like limited parking and a somewhat rough neighborhood after dark (both a mix of cool, artsy and seedy all wrapped up together) I was asked twice for a cigarette or a dollar by kids who looked 15 if they were a day, but the theater itself is quite nice. The older marquee and ticket booth make it very nostalgic while the interior of the cinema's have been remodeled and are comfortable and well laid out.. although it is not true stadium seating, it is graduated so that unless you are behind an amazon or a person with a hat you can see fine, the sound and picture quality were satisfactory as well. No issues there. The great thing about this theater is that they play special engagements and cool classic films that you might never seen on the big screen. They also have a very cool little coffee shop and wine bar attached that make Date Night easy for those of you who want to mix that in. I will be back! Horror movie buffs will love it, lots of cool classic Horror Flicks play here as well! read more
