In it's second year, this is an annual event growing in stature and character, held on the South Australian October long weekend at Cluain near Lucindale SA.
Artists of all walks, amateur and elite, show their works in and around a working sheep station in the wool shed and shearers' quarters, hosted by co-creators and members of the family that own Cluain, Hamish Macdonald and Christa Mlakar.
The setting is perfect for a day strolling the grounds of the farm, and your experience of the art unfolds as you visit the pond to see the sculpture installations, then wander in and out of the billets housing shearers during the shearing season, but for now each space is an intimate gallery showcasing a particular artist. And then finally to the main woolshed where there are further works, and music, a space to congregate and meet people and enjoy the easy and friendly atmosphere.
There are many activities, a bonfire, a sculpting symposium for children who get to unleash their creativity on a piece of Mt Gambier limestone. The event culminates in a feast held at a long table, nicely set in the woolshed, and featuring produce collected from the farm.
The event goes for the weekend, and camping on the farm is permitted with pre-arrangement. Hamish and Christa are charming hosts, and you can even take a peek in Hamish's own studio.
If you are in the area for the October long weekend, this is a must. I can only hope that it continues to prosper, from such sturdy beginnings surely something great will grow. read more
