The staff is knowledgeable in dealing with tourist...their staff spoke spanish english french and Portuguese I was pleasantly surprised. Now what was a nice added benefit was the daily guided walking tours of the city...lucia was amazing knowledgeable funny and had an in depth understanding of the city...she was great. Rooms were cleaned daily a tad smaller then some rooms but sufficient and comfortable beds. One thing as a tourist that was a tad frustrating was the wifi signal...a tad spotty and also there are no televisions in the rooms. I had a horrible experience at this hostel. I was traveling solo and stayed here for almost a week…read morein a private room/private bath in May 2019. I decided to stay here because it had been voted "best hostel for solo travelers." They also sent me a list of tours/excursions that they offered after I placed my booking. But, there were several mishaps during my stay... 1) Room: the sink basin in the room is poorly designed and too narrow. There isn't a place to put a bar of soap and water splashes everywhere and drips down to the floor. There was a significant amount of black mold in the shower (see photos). The bathroom was tiny. Housekeeping would never change towels or bed sheets. If you had a dirty towel on the floor, they would just take the towel and not replace it (then subsequently charge to get a new towel). The hostel also chains their air-conditioner remote and TV remote controller as if someone is going to steal it, despite paying a fortune for the room. 2) Tours: even though the hostel sends a "brochure/menu" of tours immediately after booking, the staff didn't really know/understand what these options were when I inquired about it at check-in. All of the tours that they advertise are handled via a third party company. So, they had to check with the tour operator for every tour regarding the availability and prices. You would think that they have so many travelers that they would know at least the prices for these tours. What was even more frustrating was that the manager Cynthia would tell me to book tours by 10pm the evening before a tour and basically be told later by one of her staff members that it was already too late to reserve a spot. I just couldn't figure out what was the disconnect with the manager, staff members, and myself... 2a) I booked a pub crawl through the hostel. I had inquired about an LGBTQ-specific pub crawl. The manager of the hostel, Cynthia (an older woman with glasses), actually took my deposit, gave me the wrong address to the pub crawl. I had taken a 30-minute UBER to Palermo by myself to find out that there was no pub crawl at that location. When I called the hostel regarding the mistake, a staff member named Augustin, told me that she didn't know of an LGBTQ pub crawl and that the manager in fact gave me the wrong address to the meeting point. Moreover, she told me that the manager couldn't have understood what LGBTQ was. How are you in the hospitality and tourism industry and working in Buenos Aires and not know what LGBTQ is? Complete waste of a Thursday night. 2b) I wanted to book a gaucho tour, but was told that there wasn't any availability for the whole week...I also wanted to book a skydive, but the staff already proved to be overly incompetent in other areas and I decided not to do it anymore. 3) Location: the hostel is located in San Telmo, which can be really inconvenient going out since most of the bars and clubs are in Palermo. Most of the bars in San Telmo are dive bars. I also found myself taking a ton of UBERs to Recoleta. So, I guess the location is good if you're planning to stay around San Telmo, but there are much nicer areas to stay in Buenos Aires. 4) Price: overpriced considering the location, and the rate didn't include breakfast (which you have to pay for separately). They also don't guarantee tours that they advertise. 5) Staff: the manager, Cynthia, needs to be trained properly on what tours and amenities are offered at the hostel. And then, she should use what she learned to train her staff because they are just as clueless as she is. Their incompetence cost me a lot of wasted time and frustration while on vacation. I ended up staying at another hostel when I returned to BA for my return flight. I would not recommend this hostel to anyone.

A really nice hostel in a great location in Buenos Aires, we stayed at America del Sur for the…read morefirst 5 nights of our trip and were all generally pleased with it. Alot of a hostels value is determined by the other people staying there in my opinion, which isn't really up to them so they're a bit hard to rate, but I'll do it anyway. The long and short of it: 1. Rooms. The rooms were pretty standard as far as hostels go, but were kept very clean. We stayed in a private and a public room (see below for reason) and both were pretty satisfactory. The beds were comfortable and the sink and shower had good (if not overpowering) water pressure and hot water. The air conditioning worked fine in both rooms and overall we were pleased. Couldn't have asked for much more. 2. Staff. The staff is what put this place over other hostels. The girls working there made sure that we had everything we needed. Our reservation through hostelworld.com did not register in their servers somehow, so they upgraded us to a private room at no extra cost until the public room that we booked was available. They were knowledgeable of the city and could always provide a recommendation or best route to an area, and were overall very helpful and friendly. 3. Extras. The hostel offers an array of extra activities including a free walking tour of a different area of the city daily, pub crawls, sight seeing tours, and other fun events for you and your hostel-mates. There is also a large common area and outdoor patio and beer for sale in the lobby if you would rather just kick back with a drink. The kitchen is pretty standard hostel size (small) but well stocked and easy to use. 4. Location. America del Sur is located in my 2nd favorite part of the city (1st being Palermo) and is a quick walk to plenty of bars and restaurants. It's also located close to a few train stations that make it easy to explore other parts of the city. 5. Price. America del Sur is a bit more pricey than a few other hostels in the area but I think it was well worth it. It's still much cheaper than a hotel and the clean, well kept rooms make the extra cash worth it. Still, if you're really price conscious and need a place to crash for a few nights there are cheaper hostels located not far from this area. It's hard for me to say I would return to America del Sur because I would like to try out the bevy of other hostels in what will always be an abbreviated stay in Buenos Aires, but I would happily jump ship to here if I found my current hostel being sub-par. Great place to stay to save a little more drinking money for vacation! Overall Grade: B+

The guy at check in was telling me about all these activities they did. Parties, tango classes, walking tours, biking, all the tours you could take, anything you wanted to do in the city basically they could arrange for you. My disappointment was on the facility. I stayed in an all female room, looked pretty good. Standard bed, plenty of storage for your stuff and one bathroom per room. However, our bathroom was very dirty and our room very very noisy. It faces the front and you could hear party until 4am and by 5am all the traffic and cars. Another thing I didn't like was they don't provide towels they do give you clean sheets for you to change though. The internet in the rooms is pretty much non existent. Smoke from cigarettes could get into the room from the windows.

DO NOT STAY HERE. I stayed in Hostel Tango for a little over 2 weeks in 3 different shared rooms…read moreand it was the worst hostel experience I've ever had. The only reason I kept living there was because I thought I had an agreement with the owner, but I don't want to focus on that here. To start off, I'll talk about the rooms. The door handle for the first room I stayed in completely fell out every time I tried to use it. Even the bunk beds are poorly crafted and feel like they're going to collapse at any moment. For me, I cared most about having a place to safely store my valuables, but the lockers in the rooms oftentimes don't have a functioning place to put a lock (so they're essentially useless). The bathrooms are in an equally terrible condition. I never had an individual bathroom and I never went in the men's bathroom, so I can't speak about those experiences, but the women's shared bathroom and the two individual unisex bathrooms were horrible. At times I would go two days in a row without being able to find toilet paper in any of the bathrooms available to me. Both of the toilets in the individual bathrooms were broken during the majority of my stay at Hostel Tango. However, there was never a sign telling residents not to use them, so they'd continuously be filthy and stink up the entire hallway. As a woman without a private bathroom, there were four toilets I could have used, but only one of these had a toilet seat (which had a crack on it that would pinch you every time you sat on it). Additionally, the showers were always filled with water since they were too clogged to drain properly. The "breakfast" that the hostel provides consists mainly of stale bread with a side of more stale bread. A few of the chairs in the dining area are broken or about to break, and all four of the sofas in the common area are in such a terrible condition it's comical. Overall, the owner is essentially a slumlord. I've talked to the owners of other hostels in San Telmo (the neighborhood in Buenos Aires) since leaving and the majority of them knew of Hostel Tango because they've had so many clients come to them after staying one night there and then deciding to leave. She doesn't care about the living conditions of her clients, particularly those that are only paying for a shared room. This hostel is extremely cheap to live in, but that being said, I still don't think it's worth the money that you'll be charged if you stay there.

Cool common and eating areas, nice bar. 24/7 security. Lots of parties, for those who like to drink and mingle. The bad. No towels. Remember to bring your own. Staff is not very friendly. Lots of parties, extremely loud music way until very late in the evening (2-3am). Broken hair dryer. It was disappointed when I had to go out with wet hair in a 60 degree weather because they didn't have a hair dryer. Do they really expect backpackers to carry one? When I told the staff she just shrugged.

I think this place is perfect for people that only come out of their rooms at night. But if you're looking to get a ton of help from the front desk to actually go and see things, good luck. The good: They offer tours that are great to go on. They have parties every night for you to go to at their hostel or their sister hostel. The bathroom was clean. The bad: The bunk beds are super wobbly. So if you move, the whole thing moves. The staff aren't ridiculously helpful during the day. They spend a lot of time chatting with each other rather than helping. I'm pretty resourceful, but to get someone to sit down and explain something is next to impossible. The bathroom floor was always really wet after cleaning and borderline dangerous. TLDR: Great Party Hostel. Not a great hostel for sight seeing.
