5 Stars for the bands and performances.
-2 Stars for the festival logistics.
The Good:
-The music
-Free Parking
-Lots of shady areas to chill
The Bad:
-DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CHAIRS AND BLANKETS SITUATION (more below)
-Expensive food
-The VIP section (glad we didn't spring for it)
-The hot hot heat
After going to Austin City Limits last year, we were pumped to have Arroyo Seco so close to home. We drove in on Sunday around noon and pretty much pulled right into the parking area on the golf course; no issues there. We were pretty early, and it was still super hot, so crowds weren't an issue yet.
The grounds were reasonably nice. Lots of tents, shady areas, art installations throughout. Great selection of LA food, albeit at a cost. Also, there were water fill stations throughout and plenty of restroom areas.
Lastly, the bands we saw rocked it: Weezer, M&S, and surprises Jamtown and Con Brio. Granted we were pretty close for all of them, so I'm unsure how it sounded from the back.
The big issue is the blankets and chairs policy. This was the first AS Weekend, but I would assume Goldenvoice would adopt a policy regarding this scourge. THERE MUST BE A DESIGNATED AREA FOR BLANKETS AND CHAIRS. This area must be a requisite distance away from the stage. This is not rocket surgery nor brain science. At ACL, the area is next to/behind the sound booth, which is more than reasonable. By the time the later acts start coming on, these blankets and chairs are a tremendous inconvenience for anyone trying to enjoy a ROCK CONCERT - this is not Shakespeare in the Park. It was ridiculous, and could be a bit dangerous, to have people standing in the narrow spaces around and between blankets and chairs that are effectively used by a few people where in reality that space could fit many, many more. This effectively packed the entire crowd more tightly in close to the stage, and further back away from the stage. Early on, I get it. Go ahead and chill and lay out. When it's 9 pm and Mumford and Sons is about to come out and you're within 50 yards from the stage, use your common sense: stand up, fold up your blanket/chair, and get ready to rock out. At first, I was mad at The Chair and Blanket Land Grabbers. When people started yelling at them and cussing them out, I kind of started feeling bad. But then got mad again.
Goldenvoice/Arroyo Seco Weekend: I speak for many (please check the comments on your Instagram) in asking you to please address this problem if you want to have a successful Arroyo Seco Weekend 2018. I really hope you do because we want to come back, but this issue is a deal-breaker. read more
