There is quite a lot of Thai food around in Auckland these days and not all of it up to scratch but Jungle Flavour is one of the best. We went for New Years Eve dinner and managed to get a last minute table for seven. That's not to say they were quiet - every table was full - so I think we just got lucky. The menu is the usual stuff but done to perfection. I'm a semi-vegetarian (oh ok fussy eater) so can often be disappointed but the Tofu Satay made me a tofu convert and my Red Curry had so much flavour I had to doggy-bag the tiny bit that was left. The service is fast and friendly and they were relaxed and patient with our three hyped-up for New Years kids. Ah, sure give 'em another round of cokes - it's a celebration. A lot of care has been taken with all aspects of this place (love the brilliantly tacky Tropical jungle theme) and the pricing is excellent. There has been a trend lately for neighbourhood restaurants removing the BYO option but happily, not here. There is of course a comprehensive drinks list including wine if you don't feel like taking your own. I can't recommend this place enough and while Balmoral already has great Thai eating, Jungle Flavour is my new absolute favourite.

Yet inside, my nerves were quickly dissipated. The decor really is jungle-like and filled with plenty of wild character. My friends really enjoyed themselves, and it made me wonder what all those bad reviewers were going on about. Will definitely go again.

The atmosphere is inviting, as the sun keeps everything well lit and vibrant. 10/10 recommend.

Aroy is a Thai eatery that opened recently in Ponsonby. Located on Ponsonby Road, it is sure to be a hit - especially with such delicious, well priced food on the menu! Chicken with oyster sauce stir fry and a side of rice only costs $12 and the portions are huge. I had it for lunch one day when I was starving and it still managed to beat me. Luckily this just meant could have the leftovers for dinner! Two meals for the price of one - bonus. The staff at Aroy are all incredibly well spoken and friendly, and are happy to take phone orders to ensure your meal is steaming hot and ready when you come to collect it.

It's big, like cavernously big, if the place ever packed out it would be like a rock concert in there but I just can't see it happening, I mean maybe in it's hey day but that feels like a time long past. All the old favourites are there though, the menu is, of course, gigantic, but the only thing I had eyes for was the BBQ pork and fried rice with grilled bok choy and a whoooooole heap of chilli sauce on the side that you better believe I spilled all over that damn tablecloth because that's how you show your appreciation at these restaurants, trust me, it's a cultural thing. I'm pretty sure most times I go here I see someone I know who also must have had the same idea as me - a delicious curry to appease the taste buds with an accompaniment of a large amount of naan bread and rice (my mouth is in fact watering just thinking about this). Not only do they do takeaway, but if you are feeling too lazy to leave the house then they also provide free delivery services as well (I think you have to spend over a certain amount though, so I guess its free* delivery services). My favourite dish would have to be the pumpkin masala - the sauce is so delicious and because the helpings are so big, you could definitely save half of it for lunch the next day.

We found Sweet Chilli after taking an Uber to the Thai restaurant 3 doors down; however, it was closed... which thankfully led us here. The service was absolutely impeccable, with sweet touches like the napkins being folded into origami crowns. The dishes are full of abundant fresh ingredients. I especially love the veggies; so many of them and prepared so they still have a crispness, and burst with flavor. The use of spices brought out perfection in every bite. I ordered a beer and was thrilled to see it came with a frosty glass. The owner is very friendly, and responsive. He cheerfully answered all my kids questions, even the somewhat silly. The restaurant is sparkling clean, including the restrooms. The air conditioning is just right. I can't recommend Sweet Chilli Thai enough! 2025 #23
