What makes Arnie's Backpackers special is Arnie, the friendly proprietor who seems to genuinely enjoy the flow of international folks coming in and out of his hostel. He'll help you with any sort of request - directions, suggestions for things to see and do in Belfast, arrangements for black taxi tours, etc - all with a smile and a local's understanding of the surrounding environment.
Arnie's is also conveniently located near the city centre and only a few steps from Queen's University. Belfast is small enough that you can get anywhere fairly quickly and Arnie's is a great staging spot.
There is a fully stocked kitchen (cooking supplies - not food) which many of the guests take advantage of to save money on meals. When I stayed there in August '09 there was a computer available for an hour at a time but no wifi. That was a year ago, so not sure if this information is still accurate. There was a bookstore around the corner on University Road that had free wifi, which I would sit outside of and use to check emails from my iPhone when coming back from the city center.
Standard hostel beds, with the sheets changed daily. However, there were only two bathrooms and one shower on the main floor for LOTS of people to share, with an additional shower downstairs off the kitchen. The hostel could use some improvement in bathroom facilities, but it's an old building. Doubt there's much that can be done. The rest of the environment is clean, but old. Could probably use a complete renovation sooner rather than later.
I stayed there for a week and met some fantastic people who I'm still in touch with. Arnie's friendly, helpful personality seemed to encourage a fun and homey environment that made these connections even better. read more
