A secret gem of a museum hidden in FT Eustis! We had so much fun and there was a ton to do at this Ft Eustis museum! It was awesome seeing all the trains,planes and automobiles in the Army's history! Very cool museum that is located on base at Ft Eustis. It's also FREE, although we did donate into the donation box. Indoor exhibits are mostly in chronological order with plenty to see. Outdoor exhibits feature trains, planes, helicopters and other forms of transportation. I would allocate at least two hours to see everything. Since it's on base, you have to get a one day pass. When approaching the gate there is a brick building on the right side, go there first to get your security clearance. They will ask for your id so make sure to have that ready. It was a quick 10-15 minute processs. read more

Army Transportation Museum Foundation - Outdoor helicopter/plane exhibit. - Museums Near Me - Fort Eustis, Virginia

I realize when I reviewed this place originally, I didn't mention the somewhat hairy process of getting ON base. You need to provide your driver's license number and other information, and you will have your car searched at the entrance. This can prove difficult if, like me, you're a US expatriate who has come from Canada to visit. My father even worked at Langley back in 1971, but that doesn't count these days. They asked for my most recent US driver's license number. Since I was only in Wisconsin for 2 years before I left, I didn't remember it. I gave them my social security number, which they were also unable to find (which is weird, because I still pay my US taxes from Canada and I'm in the system). I was beginning to panic, since I'd taken a day of my vacation and driven from Richmond to visit. Finally, I asked if they could try my Texas driver's license, which I had for 30 years or so. I'd had that number memorized for years. FORTUNATELY, that worked. So if your residency/citizenship situation is not clear cut, make sure to bring extra documentation with you (or have a brain like a file cabinet of your old ID data) or you will not be able to get on base. read more

Wow, so very impressed by this museum! The collection of vehicles is amazing and the way that they have it arranged as maintained, everything is done so well. The one thing that I didn't expect is that this museum is located on an actual military base, Ft. Eustis. So when you get to the base it's 100% ID check for adults and they will search your car. So just be prepared for that. We came because it was free admission and items at 9am. For some reason kids on vacation always wake up super early... Upon arrival at the museum (Plenty of free parking) there's a large outdoor exhibit with land vehicles, planes, ships...and every one has a plaque with description. The plaques are informative and succinct. The vehicles are just so impressive. The collection is outstanding, and love how they are placed, it really tells a story. We went to the outdoor exhibit first, then indoor. There's a small gift shop with an attendant that greets you, and you go in for the tour. I think there's an audio tour, not sure if that's free. The indoor area has plenty of exhibits, uniforms, paintings, photos, memorabilia...You could easily spend an entire half day or more here. Brought my 2 boys here, they marveled at everything inside and out. Oh and there's a whole train yard too, with trucks and tanks too. Amazing. My 5 year old loved the models exhibited showing historical vehicles to present. The museum accepts donations so we left one on our way out. It's totally worth a visit if you're in the area. This place exceeded expectations. We picked up a pamphlet at a tourist kiosk in Williamsburg. Figured why not stop since it's free. Place was massive, had an extensive collection of vehicles and we loved that every war had an indoor section with lifelike exhibits. My favorite part was the tug boat in the outdoor shipyard. read more

Army Transportation Museum Foundation - The coolest boat I've ever seen! - Museums Near Me - Fort Eustis, Virginia

I found the US Army Transportation Museum on a list of local Newport News attractions. I think any Armed Forces museums are generally really interesting and combine that with my love of trains, planes and automobiles I figured I'd be in heaven touring this place. The museum is located on base at Ft Eustis. You will have to go to the visitors booth and have your car run through the ringer to get in. Just don't be in a hurry to get there. The car search took me about 15 to 20 minutes mid day on a Thursday. I imagine it could be busier earlier in the day. The museum has extensive exhibits covering Army Transportation from the Civil War to Iraq/Afghanistan. The exhibits have copious amounts of information to read, real items from the theaters of war, in addition to the many real war ravaged vehicles on display. I honestly thought I was going to spend maybe an hour and a half here but after reading most of the presented information at the exhibits and watching the videos I found myself in the museum for almost 3 hours. It was really interesting stuff and the amount and rareity of items on exhibit are second to none. Forget watching stuff on History Channel, this exhibits and info here are far more relevant and interesting. In addition to the many items on display indoors there was 2 covered pavilions full of autos, planes, and helicopters. There were maritime transport items on display in the lawn area including full size boats. I was disappointed to find out that the rail yard display was closed to the public but I was able to get a peak through the fenced area of the many rail items on display. Museums like this one are a real gem and are a testiment to the prowess and might of the US Military forces. If you find yourself interested in the history of armed conflict or the military in general you need to swing by the museum. Its interesting for all ages. read more

I really enjoyed the Army Transportation Museum. It is a lot bigger than I expected that it would be. Its free but donations are appreciated. The museum is organized by each war starting with the Revolutionary War and ending with The War on Terror. In addition, there are three fantastic outdoor pavilions. One is a replica train station, one has army trucks, and the third one has army helicopters. The only thing I did not like but I cannot fault the museum is that since it is behind the Ft Eustis gate you have to show the guards your ID, vehicle insurance and registration and you have to step out of your car so they can search it. read more

There is a lot of stuff here! Helicopters, trucks jeeps, planes, trains, boats, and more! You can easily spend 2 hours here, probably more if you want to take your time. The larger stuff is outdoors, but most of it is shaded. Admission is free-will donation. We were able to get on post easily with our military IDs, can't speak for how easy it is to get on with civilian IDs. read more

If you plan on staying in the army for a while, are a civilian in the are, or even a family member. This place has so much history and sites to see. Information that some don't even know occurred. There is some construction happening though and it is a maze of a place, but lots of good information and knowledge to be had here read more

Having heard about this place but never visited, I didn't know what to expect. It sounded like it would be very small. I was very wrong, and not only was this place very impressive, the Army completes this by letting you view up close many vehicles throughout the outside of this museum. The inside is loaded with a complete history of transportation in the Army, complete with dioramas of scenes and realistic battle scenes all with vehicles included. There are also display cases and uniforms and all sorts of memorabilia. What I thought was going to be a quick visit, lasted 2 hours. This place is great for kids of all ages because it shows all sorts of trucks and planes and helicopters. It is a great place and highly recommend it. read more

Family friendly? It didn't work out that way for us. My wife and I recently attempted to take our 2 grandchildren to visit the museum at Ft. Eustis. We knew from the website we needed a visitors' pass. At the guard station, we were politely asked to exit the car, leave all doors open and open the hood and trunk. I have no problem with that at all. We were asked for our driver's licenses, car registration (also no problem) and a car insurance card or documentation, of all things. The only State Farm card I had was for our secondary vehicle and had expired three weeks ago. The officer asked if we could call our agent. Since it was Sunday that was not a feasible solution. That's when things started to get strange. We (children included) were told to stand at the front of our vehicle, face the Ft. Eustis sign, and that another officer would be called. Our licenses and registration were held while we waited. At this point, one of our grandsons began to get frightened and upset about this situation. To her credit, the officer tried to help us reassure our grandson (though unsuccessfully). We told her that we felt that we should leave, since the boys were too upset to enjoy seeing the museum and expressed their desire to leave and go home. Effectively, we were detained until we were cleared to leave. (we could not proceed to our intended destination (the museum) nor were we permitted to leave, since base security people were holding our licenses and registration. The officer arrived in about ten minutes, and after examining our credentials in his patrol car for another five minutes or so, returned our licenses and registration and curtly told us where to make a U-turn to exit Ft. Eustis. The website should clearly state what is needed for ID. You are not even required to have insurance in Virginia! read more

Drastic improvement on the displays indoors since the late 90's. The static stuff outdoor is not so good need work but overall good history of Eustis and Army transportation. Why doesn't that place ask for volunteers to fix the aircraft displays? The army aviation school is nearby! read more
