It's so strange, there's a luxury custom boot-maker on every corner and you can't walk 10ft in a store around here without passing someone wearing "Ariat"... but NO place for people who actually own horses lol Luckily, we stumbled upon Landmark Mercantile, and how amazing it was. Now then, there may be others closer to LCNM that have been coming here for years. For us though, we never really even need to travel towards LCNM, and if we do, we aren't looking for something like this. As horse owners though, we needed and wanted some stuff. I'm very picky about shopping online for certain things unless I can touch it, see it, experience it etc. This is what lead us to seeking local equine stores, which eventually lead us right out of town to mesquite. This place is very big! And from horses to cattle to whatever animal you'd have on the farm, they have the gear and the food you need. Everything is available here and whatever isn't, I'm sure they can order it. I didn't see anything that seemed to expensive, and everything seemed to be market average. When you first arrive, you're greeted by some adorable little cows in the pen. Likewise, there were some large roosters patrolling the entry way. Ok kinda cool. But then, to our delight, they have cats. No, not feral / stray cats, but cats that have names and actually live in the large store; like 10 of them! And they are super friendly! They have locally sourced, fresh cuts of meat, and dairy, and bread, and even ice cream! Get a scoop and walk around the store! As far as tack goes, which is why I was there, they have every single thing you need for horses. While the Louis Vuitton breast collar was tempting, I went with the fancier / show type set and got a new bit, bridle, breast plate etc. They have so many options from plane to fancy, cheap to higher end, and everything in between. Saddles, head stalls, reigns, leads, halters, bits, hackamores, saddle blankets, (I could keep going but just know they have all of it). For me, the location is awesome! Living in a brand new home in a brand new luxury community in El Paso, naturally there's no livestock kept here lol. So, we board at a world class performance facility called Armstrong Equine Services. Which happens to be ONE exit on I-10 away. And, the owner happened to walk in while I was inside - reassuring me this place is the place for anything equine related. I'll take more photos next time. Because there will be a lot of next times!

Instructors are awesome and the kids that attend are really really wonderful kids. My daughter is making and nurturing real friendships (which for a child on the spectrum is difficult to do). Speeding up those switch backs as best I could. There is a great look out spout about 2/3 of the way up. The last bit up is a bit of a scramble though. It was a quiet Monday afternoon so I had the cave all to myself. Will definitely be coming back here!

You can park your car at Chuck Heinrich park when you go hike. I like to take the longer route on the way to the mine rather than following the trail up and down because the trail is a little boring. I usually do like 6-7 miles round trip. I did see a huge snake on the trail last time I went there. He crossed RIGHT in front of me that I almost stepped on it. So be careful when you walk.

I've known about this hike for some time now, but it was just never in the cards for me so I made…read moreit my mission to host a Yelp hike here for Yelp's Fit Club and it was one of the best hikes I've done in El Paso. With the exception of the few trails over at McKelligon Canyon, I'm really not familiar with the trails in the Northeast. This trail picks up at the Chuck Heinrich Park, the trailhead is at the end of the parking lot where the posts are, but I'm not actually sure what this trailhead is called... we'll just call it the Chuck Heinrich Trailhead. We were lucky enough to have Rey D.'s two sons with us who had both been out to the Tin Mines so they were able to expertly lead us to the mines without adding an additional 1-2 mile "I'm lost" hike. There were a few signs out there, but nothing I saw with actual arrows... just signs telling you what trail you were on so if you get to far off the right trail, eventually you'd figure it out. From the Chuck Heinrich Trailhead, the mines are up in the mountains and to your right. While walking if you can see a large metal grate in the distance just keep heading that way. The hike up isn't too strenuous, but it is basically all up hill. The last 200 meters to the mines is the only part I was actually breathing hard for. The El Paso Puzzler was passing through while we were on the trail and with the exception of those cyclists, it wasn't really heavily trafficked. These trails are pretty dog friendly, but depending on the distance and how tough your pup's paws are you may want to invest in some Musher's Secret (we found out about this on the trek down). The mines themselves are really cool and the view from them is amazing! So there's the upper and lower mines. There is a little bit of graffiti among the two mines (the lower I only saw graffiti on the door) which makes you wonder, what kind of delinquents spent the time hiking 3 miles just to tag these mines? The upper mines are underneath the big metal grate. This one doesn't go as far back as the others, but I did a little research online and found out somewhere further up there is a second entrance to the upper mines that goes much further. We didn't find the second entrance to the upper, but from that research it's not really clear to me if the second entrance is like the others where you can just walk in or if it's more of a climb down. All in all, the upper mines are pretty cool because you have a lot of light to see your surroundings. The lower mines are a few steps below the metal grate. You'll see wood placed in the perfect step formation and as soon as you get to the bottom there is a short door to your immediate right. The door made it look like a crawl space to me, but once you actually get inside it's more of a "crouch space". The lower mines were my favorite because you can go a lot further. There are also a few actual crawl spaces in these mines so if you're feeling brave, that may be for you. While we were down there we did see a baby bat (still wondering where it's mama was and the rest of it's family) and Rey's sons said they had seen mice down there once so be prepared to see some small wildlife... and be realistic that there could also be large wildlife down there too. Take flashlights and don't just depend on your phone flashlight because it's really not as bright as you'd like once you're in complete darkness. While we were down there I kept thinking, why didn't I bring my headlamp. It's dark and cold so maybe bring a long sleeve shirt if you're planning on doing a ton of exploring while in the mines. I would say the hike up is beginner, but keep in mind it's about 3 miles out there so do the pace you're comfortable with. Great hike for anyone that wants to see do something unique and see a part of El Paso's history.

There is plenty of parking and a large sign with a map of many trails. Warnings do abound. Apparently, there are unexploded bombs all over the place so the sage advice is to not mess with the ammunition. Works for me! They also recommend dressing properly, not going alone, and bringing lots of water! Well, zero out of three ain't bad! I enjoyed a hike and only visited 1% of the available trails. I never saw another soul or a lazy cow!! Life is good with exploration!

So, FYI the address currently showing on "Loma Suave" IT IS NOT THE TRAIL ENTRANCE! but, it is definitely near. I did adjusted the location on the GPS so if you use your gos through yelp you should make it fine. Now. the actual review: this hiking trail entrance has awesome features provided by the City if El Paso And Franklin Mountains State Park. Kudos to both for putting this together so nicely in 2019. The entrance features an okay size parking lot. Hiking Trail Map, free Bike pump, free recharging hub, water fountain for you and your dog, dog poop bags.m and trash cans. They have hours posted but I have never seen them reinforced other than during early 2020 when the actual city quarantine prohibited park's visitation. I would see the police parked by it to ensure no one went in. There is a state park fee associated, please be kind and pay your fee. This type of awesome trails are possible due to the funds we provide. There are also ways to pay online for the whole year in case you are an avid trail hiker/biker. The trail itself is okay by foot but challenging on bike. It leads to many other trails and distances. This trail also connects to the trail leading to the Tin Mines. Awesome for ruck marches for the military and to get prepared for marathons or simply to take your dog for a walk and family hiking. Super Friendly for everyone. Check the trail map, bring water, pay the fee and adventure!!
