I have been fighting with them for over a year in regards to damage from Hurricane Helene. The adjustor who was working on my claim left the company and no one took over my claim or informed me he no longer worked there. I did not receive any information or response when I would attempt to email or call him. When I put in another claim due to theft, I received a letter stating that my insurance is not being renewed as my policy basically doesn't have me paying enough to cover my claims. I have had 3 contractors attempt to fight for me to get the claim covered from the damage from Helene and have been falling on deaf ears. They will be as kind as possible over the phone but they clearly do not care about service members, veterans, or their families. Save yourself the disappointment and find another insurance company. read more

I was with an insurance company for 40 years then they started jacking up rates like they were going on vacation, Armed Forces insurance offered a rate that was acceptable, I thought they took care of military. Then less then a year they tried to jack the rate up 800.00 per year, much higher then the other company I left for no reason exceed greed. This company's mission says it "protects the people who protect our nation" and "our mission is you." These lofty, seemingly benevolent words are absolutely false. They have not protected us and their mission is not us (veterans). They are focused on making a hefty profit and that is all. I have been paying into their coffers for over six decades; after having protected our wonderful nation for over 20 years during very dangerous missions, for which and I am now disabled. And due to mother nature and a thirty plus year old home, I had to file two structural claims in the past two years. And after that we get a cold, auto-pen cancellation letter in the mail. Not even a courteous telephone call. Be aware that the company (Hartford Steam Boiler) they hired to manage all claims calls the shots, not AFI. I know because I asked HSB and learned the definition of cold-hearted. I would not recommend this company to insure your most treasured asset, your home. Now that I am looking for another insurance company, I have discovered AFI's rates are not competitive for identical coverage! Some things happen for a reason. I wish we could rate them with a negative number. They don't even deserve a one star rating. We've been with them since 2013. Their rates have gone up every year and every time we try to do a claim (which weren't many), they've denied all of them. We had some minor hurricane damage from Helene and they told us with hurricane damage, it's a $6,400 deductible (our policy is a$1,000 deductible). They are the worse insurance we have ever dealt with. We will be canceling this piece of crap company. read more

After being a customer for years, I was very concerned with my first claim with AFI, but I am relieved. I was shocked by the bad reviews and nervous by the minute, waiting for the adjuster with my claim. I received an honest valuation, and it has been quick. I think one thing people need to understand is they are not going to do the work for you, you need to do your due diligence to make sure they have everything they need. Just like anyone else, if you just say I own this and don't provide documentation, pictures, etc... then you are going to be disappointed. Do your work, sit down, and make sure you have everything you can to make their job easier, and I think your claim will go a lot better! I worked for days, getting receipts, comparisons, and pictures, and making sure it was in an easy-to-read and numbered spreadsheet so there would be no hunting and no questions, and I can say, I am appreciative of them. read more

Had Armed Forces Homeowners Insurance for 4 years, paid on time with direct debit, claims free. They're dropping me due to wildfire risk in my zip code because it's not profitable for them to insure anymore apparently. While I understand a risk involved in insuring my property, I have taken loads of steps to fire harden my home over the years, including fiberboard siding, a new roof, all steel vents with spark block, and abatement 3x per year. Still, without warning, they drop me. I am a disabled veteran and this is my primary residence, and now I am trying to secure other insurance on my home. our home was damaged by a tornado on August 30, 2024. Here it is October 28, 2024 and we are STILL getting the run around with our claim. Our roof was severely damaged and we have had 3 different inspections from 3 different companies come out and they all concluded that our entire roof needs to be replaced but Armed Forces Insurance only wants to repair some of the roof. I requested a quote for my home mortgage insurance. I was already with Progressive. They sent me a quote from Progressive for $3545 a year. My current policy is only $1528 a year. $2000 dollars more a year for the same EXACT coverage. I think this is just one more instance of people claiming to actually care for Veterans and is just using the Veterans "tag" to entice and then crank up the rates. read more

When we bought our home on a mountaintop not too far from from Yosemite, we ran into one snag. We lived in an area that was a high wild fire risk area. No one would insurance us. USAA would not. Allstate would not. Nationwide would not. A few others would not either. And then I called Armed Forces and they said they would!!! Not only did they say yes, but 3.25 acres with a 2000 sq Ft house that is less than 20 years old, had over $50,000.00 in upgrades done to it shortly before we bought it. All this for less than $100.00 a month. We even had a fire that caused $8000.00 and they paid immediately and did not raise my rates! Excellent company!!! read more

Went on vacation and came home to a flooded bathroom and closet on a Saturday. Immediately called AFI. Guy on the phone couldn't answer a single question I had as he was not an "insurance adjuster" and has no way of viewing my policy. I tell him I have the policy and we can go over it together, I just need help understanding some pieces. He still couldn't do it as he was "not qualified"...then what is your purpose? To push butter? Guy couldn't access my account without an expiration date on the policy. I had everything (SSN, DOB, full name, policy number, member number, etc) but that. Finally took a swing in the dark and guessed my expiration based on the start date plus a year...so, yes...my random guess is apparently more secure than everything else I had. Sunday afternoon they send someone out to tear up the carpet and dry everything out. So, the water just sat there for a whole day + however many days it was sitting there before we got home. AFI still won't tell me if they would at least cover the carpet removal and replacement. Sunday continues with no word from AFI. AFI recommends I contact a plumber because they can't do anything without a plumber checking it out. This would've been nice to know as I was expecting an adjuster on Sunday along with the cleaners. I could've had a plumber out sooner at that point. Finally a "claims consultant" contacts me. From Monday to Wednesday, everytime I speak with her it's as though she's insinuating I'm the problem or I flooded my own house or I'm taking time out of her day. I just want this damage cleaned! But I don't want to go through $400 out of pocket for something they could cover. With...you know...coverage that I pay for through my escrow. The place is a scam. It would've been a lot less of a headache but more cash out of my pocket to just not get a hold of my own insurance company. I'm basically doing all of the leg work anyway. But now, I'm most likely going through the headache of dealing with AFI AND paying a boat load of cash out of pocket. read more

This Company preys on vets. They gave me a great rate that I could not turn down. In the middle of my cycle they raised the rate for the next cycle by 150%. My mortgage company called me and told me that the insurance company sent draft request for 3x the amount of their proposal and that I should probably contact them. Due to legal reasons the mortgage company had to pay them the amount they requested which drained my escrow. I called the insurance company to find out what was going on and they told me that they sent me paperwork outlining the increase. (They did not) When I said that I did not get that notice and that they should not have raised it without my consent they said the paperwork indicated that no response meant that you agreed to the increase. I told them that I did not consent and they said that it was too late, the rate already went through. Then I asked how they could justify a 150% increase with no claims on the property. They told me that in the state of Virginia it was perfectly legal to raise it that much without the consent or notification of the homeowner. There was the real answer right there. My mothers house had a water pipe break and flooded a few rooms in the house. They started out good but soon stopped returning my calls promptly. The company they used to remove flooring dented in the dishwasher and both AFI and the company they used refused to return my calls or answer my emails. The hours and hours I have had to spend following up on this company is amazing. The fact they would treat a military widow this way is just plain unethical. I am now caring for my mother and will be changing insurance companies as soon as possible. My opinion is this is a company to be avoided. read more

I can't put lower than one star or I would've. I called them about homeowners insurance and they would not insure me unless I put my dog in a run and/or enclosure and made her live outside and NOT IN MY HOME. Who wants to have their family dog cooped up outside crying? She is a pitbull but that wasn't the issue and if they said "we won't cover you because of the breed" that would've been better than telling me to be cruel to my dog. So calling around, so far Allstate is my first choice. I'll never use a company that tells me to be cruel to our dog. I am so glad I did my research when I received a GREAT quote for home insurance with Armed Forces. Although their quote came in hundreds of dollars less than others like USAA, Amica, etc., I chose to go with a higher priced company. Why? There has to be a reason for their super cheap rates. It is probably because, as the evidence shows here and all over the Internet, they don't pay out claims. Basically, you pay them several hundred dollars a year to satisfy lender home insurance requirements. I'm reviewing, because the lady that I spoke with on the phone who followed up on my quote was incredibly rude and tried to talk over me when I honestly answered her question about why I was not choosing to insure my new home through Armed Forces. I am appalled that my lender actually recommended these people and I certainly intend to have a long convo with my loan officer about it. I doubt it will make a difference, but it might. We shall see. Long story short, DO YOUR RESEARCH before choosing this company to insure possibly the largest purchase you will ever make in your life. Insurance is not something to skimp on. I have been a member of Armed Forces Insurance Since 2016. Had Homeowner's Insurance for my home here in mountain of San Diego County. However, received a letter on March 2 from Tracey Sommerla VP & Chief Risk Officer stating they have decided not to renew my policy because their automated system has indicated a Higher-than-average propensity for loss. This is BS my home built in 1978 and is still standing for the last 45 years. When I spoke to her about the issue, she could care less I was a disabled veteran on a fixed income, or they were losing my business. They are more concerned about their jobs and the company then the Military and Veterans they insurance. Had Armed Forces Insurance come out and replace my roof last year .Ask them to check the gutters they said the gutters where good but never checked them even when they leaked water out of the end caps. Now the gutters are laying on the ground and the eve's and roof have been pushed up from the gutters coming off due to heavy ice . There people need to learn how to check gutters for leaks. Bait and switch company. Offered a SUPER low rate the first year, several hundred dollars cheaper than USAA. Then, come renewal time, they upped the price by several hundred dollars and are now more expensive than USAA for less coverage. Ignored calls and emails, the process of having something fixed after storm damage is like pulling teeth. They will do everything in there power to save a few dollars even if it means doing their customers wrong. You will have to threaten with a lawyer and even then they will not care. I had a terrible experience with a small claim. There was a rider on my policy for the exact problem I was having, and they still issued a claim denial. I spoke with the regional claims manager and AFI did eventually pay, but it was a real hassle. So I started reviewing what other people and was shocked by all of the negative experiences. Based on that, I called and cancelled my policy. They asked me on the phone why I was canceling, and I told them from all of the negative customer claim experiences. I went with AFI because I assumed being an insurance company catering to veterans they'd be a top notch company. My homeowners premium seemed decent but the following year it went up 200 dollars. Another year later it went up another 200 dollars. I started off paying 1200 a year and after 2 years it was 1600 a year. After learning my neighbors pay less than a grand I called another company and was insured for 850 a year. read more

Oh they sound great, and they have low rates, but I can see why. I had to file a claim because through the action of children acting crazy, my bulldog got scared and bit my neighbors kid. There was no monetary loss, and it was just reported to them, but 2 months later I get a non renewal letter in the mail because of a dog bite loss. Total crap. This is a predatory company that uses the name "Armed Forces" in the name as a way to give themselves credibility. Well, first of all AFI is a scam. I thought at the time I was getting a good deal. Turns out not only are they a bunch of scammers who prey on Vets, they don't stand behind crap and use every excuse you can think of the not pay a claim. I filed 2 claims, years apart, one was a suspected F1 tornado that blew over some trees and took out part of my fence. Also lost a few shingles as well. They used every excuse to pay as little as possible. In the end I was just a well off to paid all of it myself and not had wasted the energy dealing with them. the second incident involved my roof. The prior incident caused damage they would only half-ass fix plus several more storm on top of that now their saying that the roof to worn. No shit Sherlock, guess it is now. They wouldn't pay for a replacement, only a repair, which is absolutely the opposite of all of the roofer's suggestions. I told them NOT to send me a check as I would not settle for anything less than a full replacement and of course they sent one anyway, not even enough to cover the postage (joke but not by much) read more

An update for anyone who is dealing with them. Get a Public Adjuster. I got one and after mediation they still didn't agree to pay. So we said we will go to court. A few days before the court date, they caved and said they would pay for a new roof. They knew they would lose in court, but will test you to see how far you will go. Don't let them get by with not paying up and get a Public Adjuster help you. read more

I am writing this review to direct the attention of the "Chairman of Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) and Management Team". Most importantly, to the people who are looking for a homeowner's Insurance or already a customer of AFI. I have been a customer for more than 32 years with 0 claim. I paid all my dues on time and in full. I switched insurance carriers on September 6, 2018 because I felt AFI failed their mission to protect me. They treated me unfairly as if I do not exist. Here's why: July 25, 2018, around midnight. Water leak coming from behind the ceiling in one of our upstairs bedroom. Saw leak coming from the edge of air conditioner. Decided to wait till morning to save on emergency call. 7/26/18, Called AFI, transferred to the claims department. Explained the problem, given a claim number and told "KG" is our claims rep but she is out of office. KG called while we were out. She left a message for us to call back. We called back and spoke to KG. KG said the source of leak not covered. Will cover only damage caused by the leak. KG gave the go-ahead to call a plumber to inspect and possibly repair the leak. List of the local contractor not available. I will need to contact a plumber to effect a repair. The plumber found the leak but cannot repair. Need to call HVAC tech. I called HVAC tech and got an estimate. Another company came to dry the room and clean up the mess. 7/27/18, Called KG twice to give her an update and to ask a couple of questions and advice. KG out of office, I left two messages to call me back. Never called back. 8/6/18, I emailed KG reminding her that I am still waiting for her reply and her a couple of questions and advice. No response. 8/10/18, I sent a direct message to the Chairman complaining about KG non-response to my call and email. KG finally called. I explained to her what happened. Again, she said the repair estimate by the HVAC tech is not covered. However, the rest of the repairs are covered but not the service call for the plumber. When I reminded her that she gave me a go ahead to call a plumber, she said it's covered. 8/16/18, I emailed KG to ask her a couple more questions. I thought I would get a quick response this time. Again, no response. 8/28/18, I wrote a feedback on AFI FB page about the continued non-response (for the second time) of KG. Got a call from claims supervisor DE. DE said their record only shows my last contact with KG was on 8/10/18. I said I would forward him the email I sent to KG. DE answered my question and apologized on behalf of KG. I recommended a written counseling for KG but to date; I have not received any communications back from AFI. Lesson learned: Always take notes and if possible, use email. Conclusion: I believe the root cause of the problem at AFI is the culture of "if possible, do not pay" from their claims department. This kind of attitude only happens because, in my opinion, their Chairman and Management Team do not care what their customers (not members) say as long as they make money. Here is what I always told my sailor supervisors before; "You can delegate all you want but if you don't follow up, you will fail as a leader". AFI mission statement of "To protect the people who protect our nation" is the exact opposite of what they did to me. Please do your due diligence very carefully. Buyer beware of AFI! read more

She is RUDE! and even when asked the simplest of questions (because I have never had a fire at my home before and have no clue how this works) I am treated with disrespect. Im currently in the middle of filing a claim due to water damage. Now almost a month into my claim being filed and multiple estimates coming in around 14k, ive only to this point received a check for 2k. Because of that my ceiling has now caved in and my home has now become a danger to my family of 4. I have a newborn only 2 weeks old and a 2 year old that i fear will be injured or worse due to the ceilng caving in. No contractor will start the work because i dont have the money to pay them. I have in writing from the adjuster that your company sent out that his estimate was over 14k as well. They refuse to put us up in a hotel even though i have that covered in my policy. Claudette R. I'd prefer minus 5 stars. I'm a 100% Disabled Veteran, Incomplete Paraplegic. This company left me and my family broken and homeless. My Niece, her 6 year old Daughter and 10 year old Son are now living in a low income apartment where I pay her rent & utils. I still have 2 mortgages, plus the taxes utilities like water while I am homeless. My Niece and her children were living with my wife and I in our beautiful, Phoenix home until a pipe leak inside the walls May 2017. We had to evacuate due to improper handling /Black Mold, by the company the Insurance Carrier had a contract with for repairs. We thought that we were going to have to stay in a hotel for a few days or week. Next thing we knew, we became ill especially me. I almost died several times and barely clung to life for the most part of the first 5 months. Black mold is really dangerous. The Mycotoxins it releases are extremely deadly, deadlier than Sarin gas. Armed Forces put us in a hotel, after we slept in the house with all of the poison but didn't know the dangers and weren't told. We informed them we had been forced to potty in the back yard since the bathrooms had been (remain) completely gutted.That was back in May. We ended up moving from hotel to hotel and had to deal with a lot of nonsense. What's more, the adjuster (Local guy they hired) wrote in his report that the upstairs bathroom leaked into the downstairs bathroom. It is however a single story home. When I asked for help and advise in respect of being very ill and connecting it with the mold, they refused to offer me any information that would have been helpful in directing me how to get help or who to turn to for it. They instead played dumb and continually changed the subject, always trying to tell me as if ordering me against good judgement and as if I somehow could change the situation, but they ordered me to get busy and get someone in to the house to rebuild the bathrooms so we could return home. They knew about the Mycotoxins. They knew I was researching and struggling to find an answer to why I was suffering all of the symptoms. As weeks passed, I discovered the company my Insurance Company authorized to do the remediation, was not planning to return to the house or do anything unless I were willing to sign a deceitful and nasty contract and when I shocked them by actually reading it and saying,"No way". I felt I was forced to seek licensed contractors to come repair the damages. As it turned out, everyone who came got sick and some threatened to sue me. Strangely they stopped calling me in a few days after they spoke to my adjuster. I soon began to learn that my symptoms were from tiny mycotoxins that the particular strains of mold release when threatened or disturbed. I became aware that I was suffering Mycotoxicosis and from Trichothecene. I needed help to prove it, so I hired different mold experts and an environmental Hygenist. The insurance adjuster was furious that I dare use my better judgement and proceed to investigate the matter, rather than follow their directions to hire someone to build over the mold immediately; they stopped payment of housing expenses thereby they threw us out of the hotel with no where to go and we had the small children with us. 123 degrees that day. I almost died again. Also they continually failed to pay the hotel so forced us to spend our money or be thrown out while the adjusters enjoyed holidays etc.. After the first mold expert I hired concluded the visible presence of black mold where the insurance carrier authorized remediation (idiots) had "Conducted their remediation" (Contaminated and destroyed our entire home and all it's contents), then the adjuster called the man I had hired and coerced him to provide her the report and lab results that I personally had paid for and were to be mine exclusively. Suddenly in 2 days of being on the streets with the children and no home or hotel, the adjuster calls me saying , "I'm sorry Mr. Nelson for the error and any inconvenience it caused you. If you're ready to put that behind us and move forward, we will send you back to the hotel and in a week or so we will be placing you and your family into a rental home in your neighborhood". (Sounds like they're sincere now, right? No!) When they finally did place us in the rental house, I was sent to the hospital the first night because I became very much a reverse of my healing from the mold illness, and discovered black mold in the rental house too. I'm also out $2000 I paid to prove the mycotoxins in my house and prove the mold in the rental house. We were forced to flee the rental house in late July and the insurance adjuster stopped all ALE in August, leaving us homeless and we're still homeless November 26, 2017 without any help from these jerks at Armed Forces. I have found that I do not Trust AFI (Armed Forces Insurance). Had I looked here first I would not have had the problems. I filled out the online application and then they needed an inspection within 30 days. The policy was issued, a refund for over payment of premium was made, a letter from the President of the Company & the Policy arrived and I left on vacation. 34 days later I received a call demanding entry into my home so that Photos could be taken. I could not return that day or even the next and wanted to be there when PHOTOS of the INTERIOR of my HOME were taken. This was unacceptable to AFI and they cancelled my policy. The photos were to be taken by a THIRD PARTY they had hired. The inspection was not in my opinion an inspection but a photo journal of my home. read more

This company was appealing to us because of the substantially lower rates, however you get what you pay for. We had damage to our fence caused by wind, and never making a claim before I called AFI for advice on the matter. The representatives I spoke with were unknowledgeable with a lot of "I don't know" or "I am not an adjuster" comments. So, I went ahead and filed a claim which it then took over two weeks for an adjuster to show up. That was over three weeks ago and I still have not heard a thing! I finally called to cancel this policy, after finding out for myself the negative reviews were correct, where the customer service representative laughed in an ashamed manner over the handling of my claim. I am sure she is there for the same reason AFI exists... simply to collect a paycheck. read more

I chose to go with AFI when I bought my house a couple years ago in Fort Worth. I sustained hail damage to my roof during a storm. Called to file a claim, they came out like the next day to look at the roof, agreed it needed to be replaced. That part went fine. Getting the check is a whole other story. This claim was filed middle March, it's now the end of June and I am still waiting. The lady that was assigned to handle my claim was impossible to reach and never returned phone calls or emails. Tired of trying to deal with her, I reached out to a manager, hoping to get better results, not much luck so far there either. I've heard checks in the mail more times than I can count. Just got off the phone with them regarding the check I was suppose to receive a week ago that gee surprisingly didn't show up. Now I should be receiving one Wednesday via overnight. Doubt it but we shall see. Really really recommend staying away from this company, I know once this nightmare is over I will have no further dealings with them. I have experienced better. We have new vehicles and were able to get prices cheaper locally. Hopefully something can be done;. it would be great to help more veterans. read more
