I'm going to try and keep this as objective as possible, but Caroline's (the Owner) Class was hands down the most negative experience and disrespectful teacher I have ever had the displeasure of practicing with. I would advise going just about anywhere else.
Here's my experience with Caroline at Arjuna Yoga:
When I first arrived I was greeted by a woman who said "you must be so and so" because I'd signed up online and there was only one other person there for class when I arrived. She then told me to grab two blocks and a strap and told me where the bathroom was. I found the bathroom but then wandered around trying to find the actual studio. Finally I had to go back to the front and ask and she mumbled something unclear then I had to ask again, "is it in this door?" She said yes so I went on in.
The music in the class while not overly loud, was easily loud enough to overpower Caroline's voice and her instruction was very unclear and hard to hear.
Unlike most yoga instructors, bikram and otherwise, Caroline did not instruct, instead she just practiced with us and mumbled along the direction to her flow. I'm used to my yogi's actively teaching and participating by making adjustments and monitoring their students bodies. She even said that, and I quote "I love teaching yoga because I'm really a lazy person and teaching yoga makes me practice daily." This is opposite from everything that I have ever learned and experience in my yoga practice
About 35 minutes into class Caroline had us do handstand hops, I instead just chose to just do a handstand and hold it. She complimented me on it, something I don't particularly appreciate (just a small quirk of mine) because I don't want others in class to feel like they need to be in a handstand, fancy poses are not the point of yoga after all. A couple minutes later I floated forward from DFD to Forward Fold with a handstand in the middle, something that I've personally been working on doing smoothly and the second awkward comment came out..."Just because you are good at something doesn't mean you need to do it."
Turns out that I was really starting to bother her because about 45 minutes in she made a comment about how I shouldn't be practicing my Ujjayi Pranayama in a heated yoga class because it's bad for your body. She then went on to say that "I've been to India many many many times and ALL of my yogis who have been practicing yoga for years and years say that it's bad." The funny thing is that I actually wasn't. I was breathing in, and I have a strong and loud breath, through my mouth, pulling it across my tongue to cool down my body and then exhaling out through my nose on a six count like I usually do. She thought I was still heating up and this really really bothered her. I'm unsure why if I was doing something that was harmful to my body, why did she wait 45 minutes into the class to warn me about it? That seems a bit dangerous.
I told her that I appreciate the advice and continued to breath in through my mouth aka "not Ujjayi Pranayama" but that still bothered her. She then went on to say to the whole class" that beginners will be beginners and that she knows what she's talking about because she's been practicing now for 13 years." I thought that belitting a yogi in the middle of your class was pretty disrespectful and very un-yogic but that's how she chooses to teach. I'd also like to point out that she had no idea how long I've been practicing for, 12 years myself, and that I've also done my 200 HR yoga instructor certification.
She then continued to rant about me to the class and how someday I'd learn! Turns out I also remind her of her 30 year old son who thinks he knows everything but obviously she is "much more wise." I like to think that I know what is going on within my own body and how it feels in each pose than an instructor who doesn't know me and didn't care to ask about my practice or if I'm working with any injuries, which I am.
We didn't end class with Savasana which I thought was strange. It just ended abruptly with another snide remark to the class about me and she left the room. I stayed in the room seated to meditate for a couple minutes and let the anger and negative energy from Caroline leave me and to ready myself for more rude comments from her upon leaving.
I ended up chatting with a couple of the other yogis who showed up for the class (there was only 5 people myself included) before heading out and Caroline was no where to be seen.
This is the first time I have ever had a yoga instructor intentionally be rude to me in a class and make me feel unwelcome. I'm unsure what would encourage someone to treat their students so but I would have to recommend NOT going to Arjun Yoga. Maybe there are better instructors there but if that is the way that the owner treats her student's I can't think it's a very healthy place to practice. read more
