The statue of Argus honors Marten Toonder. Toonder was a famous Dutch comic strip creator.
Argus was one of Toonder's characters who was a news reporter. Named for the mythological character Argus Panoptes, who had a hundred eyes on his body, Argus was the proverbial new reporter: curious, inquisitive, tenacious and a bit intrusive.
The statue was placed in the square to pay tribute to the historically significant site where hundreds of journalists used to post the daily news. Printers were located here since the 17th century followed by newspapers and magazines which have gone by the wayside in recent years.
