The Pumping Station - Base of vases

This place should be in every guide book and on every website of Cardiff…read more The Pumping Station is a densely packed building filled with antiques and collectibles. So densely packed in fact, that a supernova of flying Hornby trains and silver spoons can be expected any day now. The drive up to this place is full of statues and garden sculpture, and always reminds me of the Narnian statues in the White Witch's palace in 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'. The main hall is a Victorian building full of old fireplaces and interiors. Everywhere you look there is something new to catch your eye. With around 40 individual stalls, there is a downstairs area with sections made to resemble old-fashioned shop fronts, each with their own speciality. You might find anything from old comics to fine bone china. There is also a small cafe at the back, which, although not wonderful, is friendly and very reasonably priced. They make a good cup of tea. If you have something very specific in mind then you may need to enlist the help of a member of staff, but otherwise the main joy of this place is the browsing and discovering.

Now as a grown up looking for unique artifacts to decorate my own place with I really love the place. It really is a treasure trove of everything that you want, from vintage clothes to reclaimed tiles. It really has the most massive selection of really unusual stuff and the old building that houses it all really adds to the atmosphere of the place. I'd probably say that because its so well known, you maybe won't get boots sale bargain finds but its a definite must visit.

Quaint and kitschy - that's how I'd sum up Polka Dot…read more Much to my surprise, the shop, which appears diminutive from the outside, is actually situated on three floors and filled with crafts, stationery and other goodies like vintage-style home goods (I nearly bought the "My farts hospitalise small children" magnet but decided against it). I'd say this kind of shop caters mostly to tourists looking for a creative souvenir to bring back for their female friends, but that didn't stop me from eying up several items worthy of birthday gifts for my girls here in Cardiff - I dare you to walk in here and not find something you like! Polka Dot is definitely one of the better shops in Mermaid Quay, and a perfect place to buy a knick-knack that you admittedly may not need, but would be a sweet addition to your home or office.

I read the previous reviews and so it seemed odd that it was popular, well at least to me. Yes if your a bloke and your other half drags you in kicking and screaming, your alternative is to check out a bar or pub for 30minutes while she looses all common sense. I couldn't see any real use for a lot of it, unless you want to live in la la land and pretend to have tea parties with your friends or should I say your stuffed teddies etc. Oh and please don't expect you can explain to me why it's so great. I'm sure for the girly girls out there you might enjoy this oddball shop, but for me I'm out! I ridicule in jest, but seriously there are limits.

Its massive inside and has a range of stock to suit everyone from babies to teenagers. What i've always loved is that they have lots of toys on display too so you can see what things are like out of the box and I always remember skating down an aisle or my brother n a little bike trying to mow me down! It makes it fun for the children and adults as well.

No longer would we go to the store to pick up a lightsaber and pretend to be in Star Wars and no longer would we experience the joy and happiness that filled our hearts.... Until now! Toys R Us is back and better in a new location down Cardiff Bay I must admit that I was never a big fan of the other Toy's R Us because it seemed dark and unfriendly. But now there have been some big changes to the current store filled with the brightest lights and the bubbliest of people. This is a gigantic store that a child could get lost in for months. It has such a fantastic variety of toys and I can live my dream once again and pretend to have a lightsaber fight in order to defeat the dark side. The number of aisles are staggering but there is always an assistant prepared to help if you need some help about an item or just finding your way around the store. Toy's R Us has the renovation it needed. It is now a happy and bright place that is filled with all the toys in the world along with excellent service. What more could you need from your favourite toy store?

That's the first place that I have told not take pictures of within a long time. I know this because I was told off by the till area for not being able to take pictures without permission, but that was after I had been taking pictures already inside and plenty of staff where around who could have also told me off. Mind you the guy at the entrance did look a bit shifty towards me as I had my camera around my neck, but he did not say anything to me still. It is a very useful and massive shop, based around the Cardiff Bay and it is free to enter. They have several sections of products such as; lights, bed duvets, candles, pictures frames, cloth hangers, plenty of storage items, mirrors, a cafe, a car park, a low deals offer, large lifts, escalators, and a Swedish food market area. Entry is free; the staff do seem a little picky about certain things, but it is a very useful shop and our house and Caravan in Pembrokeshire are both full of IKEA items and products. I would still recommend it as a shop for everyone to attend and buy house items from.

We all know Ikea is a must for furniture hunters on a budget - not just in Cardiff but world wide -…read moredid you know that Ikea is the biggest furniture seller in the world? But this review isn't about the furniture - ohhhhh controversial!!!!! I hear you say. This review is about the food. All I want to say is consider Ikea not just as a furniture store but a quite good cheap restaurant too. Its great value for money. You can get a cooked breakfast for 99p! Where else in the developed world can you get that? Ok the meatballs and the fish and chips are not as cheap but they are as cheap as a chip shop and you have all the sauce you could wish for and a table and chair to sit down and eat it at too! One word of advice I wouldn't take a first date here - I did once and it didn't last long after we left the store - pity really she looked quite nice all dressed up.
