I discovered George's Shoe Repair after giving up on my favorite Cambridge place, whose post-pandemic prices spiked quite high and became unrealistic for my budget. I am so grateful to have found George's Shoe Repair; I've had different services performed on about six pairs of shoes, and I'm thrilled with the results. As far as I'm concerned, George's Shoe Repair doesn't have competition in the Boston area, and will always be my first call when I need any work done on my shoes.

I had an unfortunate experience with George's shoe repair. I initially brought my leather duffel…read morebag in on September 17 for a broken zipper and to the worn leather handles. The owner (who I assume is George) was extremely polite and kind. He quoted me about a weeks time for the repairs and a very reasonable price. He took my phone number, gave me a stub for pick up, and I was on my way. I made my first call to George's three weeks later on October 6th because I'd gotten no update. Again, the owner was very polite and let me know that he'd been in the hospital for a minor surgery and was a bit backlogged. That was of course understandable. He quoted me a further 1-2 days for the repair, I wished him a speedy recovery and went on my way. Two weeks later, on October 14th, I made next call to ask about the bag. The owner let me know it was still not done. He was busy, and he'd forgotten about it, but it was top priority! It was a Wednesday, he would have it done by Friday! Well here we are, October 28th. I made an impromptu visit to George's letting him know that I needed the bag back whether it was done or not. To my surprise when I arrived at the shop, he told me it was done, and I paid and went on my way. I could see just by looking that the handles had not been worked on but there was a new zipper. He charged me less than the original quote, so I paid and left. Sadly, it wasn't until I got home that I noticed the shoddy workmanship. The zipper that he'd installed was 4" longer than what the pocket of the bag. He'd made no effort to trim it, and instead curled the extra zipper up inside the pocket. Additionally, there's a hole where the zipper joins the bag that is big enough to fit my finger through (see photos). The owner may be friendly, but the work speaks for itself. A 5-week delay for a relatively simple job and a substandard repair. My recommendation would be to save yourself the disappointment and look somewhere else.

So I was a bit nervous. I walked in with my favorite pair of boots in hand. They were worn down and sported ripped shoelaces. I needed help. I was greeted very pleasantly and helped immediately. I said I needed new soles and laces. I got a few options on lace color. I picked something standard. About 15 seconds of looking at the damage ensued. I was told all in it'd be $50 for new soles, laces, and a polish. A way better deal than buying new boots. It felt like a bargain. I paid the sum in full and was back a few days later to pick up my boots. They looked brand new. I put them on and still felt the benefit of the several hundred miles I've already logged in them. A fresh new start.

However having gone through what I just did though and knowing the generally good reputation this business has, I feel like I owe it to others to at least try to get the word out everywhere I can and hopefully stop someone from making the same mistake. I had gone to Dave's once before and despite some customer service issues(they somehow lost track of the shoes for a few days) I was impressed with the repair job so I wanted to give them my business again. I took in the shoes my husband bought specially for our wedding to address a few scrapes from a fall he took during the reception. When I picked them up yesterday, they looked different in a way I couldn't place right away but the scratches were better and I had to get back within my lunch hour so I paid and left. It didn't process until I saw them out of the bag at home that they had totally polished over the unique burnished finish and made them a uniform dark brown, completely removing a large part of their charm(see the photos of the brown shoes I'm uploading for reference). My husband and I were devastated. We're not rich, nice shoes like these were an investment piece for him and held sentimental value for both of us. It could be they saw this as necessary to cover the scratches, I can't be sure. What I do know is that I was never asked or even told about it. Even all that by itself might not have been enough to get inspire me to write this review though, that is owed completely to how they handled it. I called them to complain. I won't lie, I was still upset and it probably showed in my voice. I made a very active effort to keep my words civil though and explained the issue plainly. I wasn't interested in anything except an acknowledgement and potential advice to fix this. Once I finished explaining, they hung up on me. I called back, ready to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was an accident (even if I doubted it personally). They picked up and immediately hung up again. Disgraceful. Entirely Disgraceful. To the owners: I took the shoes and paid you, I acknowledge that and realize I don't have the power to do much here. However, as someone who works just around the corner, I am going to do my damnedest to caution anyone I can away from you. That probably won't do a hell of a lot, but I like to think you won't get off entirely scot-free for treating me like garbage. If it also helps someone else stay away from my mistake, even better.

Zipper repairs are quite pricey as it's a labor intensive process to remove and insert the zipper. I eventually decided on Rinaldis as they were able to replace my boot zippers for $40 (the price of your service needs may vary depending zipper size). I'd originally shopped around and was quoted nearly twice the price at other repair stores so I was quite happy to find a deal here. I had a little trouble locating Rinaldis at first as their storefront is only accessible through an indoor area. They're located ground level inside an indoor arcade/corridor lined with various restaurants and vendors. The arcade was very quiet when I went on a weekend afternoon. They were brand new and I had them re-soled on the bottom to prevent scuffing and wearing of the infamous red sole. The after pictures I have provided are the shoes after a couple wears, so excuse the dirt. My Brian Atwood's were in terrible shape as you can see. The heels of every pair I have (and I have 3 ) wore down immediately after a few hours of walking. I recommend to change the heel tips immediately before use. ( I lost mine walking in Boston but thankfully I had an extra pair of flats with me!) My strappy Judith Lieber's snapped on the side as you can see. I was devastated and almost contemplated glueing them myself. I did not want to ruin the diamonds with glue, however so I brought them to fix. I'm soo glad I did.
